Dear Military Recruiter: Leave my child alone!

Portland, 28.08.2006 01:38

As youth ages 16-18 return to school, they and their parents need to know that the Pentagon and military recruiters collect information on both boys and girls, from their schools to aide them in recruiting. If youth or their parents don't want to be targeted, recruited or have their names in Pentagon or military recruitment databases, they can Opt Out of the system but they must take proactive action to Opt Out. Some school districts limit the time frame to make select this option and it often occurs during the registration period. Accordingly, time is of the essence if you or your youth don't want your name in government databases. find out more...

Rising Violence as NATO takes charge of Southern Afghanistan

San Francisco Bay Area, 27.08.2006 00:38

July 2006 was officially the bloodiest month in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in November 2001. It is estimated that between January and August at least 1,700 people were killed in fighting across the country. The death toll was a result of operations by foreign troops-involving heavy air bombardment of villages mainly in the south-and attacks by insurgent guerrillas, armed drug barons and Taliban fighters.

In July, a British and Canadian-led NATO force officially took control of the south of Afghanistan. The US-trained Afghan army is supposed to take over security responsibilities from NATO, but according to the US general in charge of training the army, this will not be able to happen for at least three more years.

Bikes, Death and Sacrifice: A Short Story of my Night and Critical Mass

NYC, 26.08.2006 23:08

I started out biking from Brooklyn to Union Square to catch this months critical mass bike ride. Saw a friend on the bridge. "I'm heading off to Seaport to see Ted Leo". "Cool, I'm going to Critical Mass." "Have fun." "Later". I made it to Union Sq north by 7pm. Chilled for an hour listening to the Rev Billy give his shpiel with the Hungry Marching band behind him. Flyers galore, beautiful bikes and beautiful people too. About 30 scooter cops on Union Sq. east waiting. Another batch on broadway waiting to snatch us. Fuck it. Let's go.[Critical Mass Roundup || Critical Mass London UK encounters police bully-boy tactics. || US IMC Feature on Critical Mass and Hurricane Katrina]

Countdown to the Richmond Demostration

Richmond, 26.08.2006 21:38

Poverty wages, brutal conditions, crippling injuries--5,500 workers in Tar Heel, North Carolina face this every day at the world's largest hog processing plant. Cited by Human Rights Watch for violating international human rights standards, Smithfield Packing has created an environment of intimidation, racial tension, and sometimes violence for workers who want a voice on the job. The company, which at one time created its own private police force, was found liable by the National Labor Relations Board and the DC Court of Appeals of assaulting, intimidiating, and illegally firing its workers. In a separate case, the National Labor Relations Board ruled that Smithfield illegally threatened workers with arrest by Federal Immigration officials. A century since Upton Sinclair's The Jungle shocked the world about the atrocious conditions endured by workers in meatpacking plants; time stands still at Smithfield. Join the civil rights, religious, community, and labor organizations that are helping workers in the fight to win justice at Smithfield.

ziua europei, 9 mai si mitingul sindicalistilor

Romania, 26.08.2006 21:07

Mii de protestatari pasnici au manifestat in Geneva in favoarea tarilor sarace. Orice ar spune rapoartele oficiale, vocea protestatarilor nu a fost ascultata, ci a fost stinsa atat de violenta, cat si de indiferenta liderilor politici."

social integration in iasi

Romania, 26.08.2006 21:07

In Iasi it is very hard to organize any serious direct actions because of the bureaucracy, so one of the solutions for us as activists, or anarchists in particular, has been to get involved in some ngo’s and try to be as active as possible, and even try to get in contact with some open minded people to create alternatives and basically a network in our city, and why not, to promote our values and a different point of view to the people from those ngo’s.

proteste studentesti in grecia

Romania, 26.08.2006 21:07

Journey To South Lebanon: Part One

NYC, 26.08.2006 20:38

Watch Video

On Sunday morning, we grabbed coffees and traditional Lebanese breakfast sandwiches called Knefes, and headed to South Lebanon. The highway to the south was lined with huge billboards with images of guerillas with anti-tank missiles and the words “Divine Victory” written on them, other signs with wounded children with the slogan “Made in the USA” written in large letters, and multiple others highlighting last month’s struggle between Hezbollah guerilla fighters and the Israeli Defense Forces.

‘Destroyed’ FBI Puerto Rico Files Prompt Cover-up Charges

NYC, 26.08.2006 17:38

In the wake of an activist's death at the hands of FBI operatives, the agency's revelation that it may have destroyed records on the independence movement in Puerto Rico has aggravated tensions over the government's presence on the island. In a recent response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the FBI admitted that it could not locate records relating to the activities of a prominent Puerto Rican nationalist. It also stated that its field office in San Juan, Puerto Rico may have destroyed the documents when purging its files years ago. [Previous NYC IMC Coverage || "A People's Tribute"]

City of St Helens Fleeces Poor, Working Class Residents

Portland, 26.08.2006 16:08

For those who do not know St Helens, it's a beautiful, old-fashioned village out here along the rolling Columbia river. It's a working class community with a sense of the funky, where rural folks come together and create a vibrant, living culture of their own. Full of artists, anarchists, and working people who live together in harmony, it seems like the perfect place. That is, until the Water Wars began. Now, it's getting harder to make ends meet here. And nobody seems to care.

Stop Ancient Aleutian Archelogical site Destruction in Alaska

Portland, 26.08.2006 16:08

I was shocked when a friend took me by an archeological dig site and we found a steam shovel and dump truck hauling off loads of stone houses, whale bone and ivory artifacts and countless other cultural treasures to a gravel pit- junk yard- land fill.

The ancient site is featured in the local museum for its incredible artifacts discovered during past archeological digs. Really incredible carvings, tools and personal effects from societies that have thrived at the edge of the world between Aleutian Volcanoes and the Bering Sea for centuries.

I called in a complaint to the historical preservation office at the state of Alaska who approved the state bridge project which is being funded with federal money and built on the local native corporations land.

Report from Aug. 25th, 9:46 pm Critical Mass Is Dead, Long Live the Mass!: If you were there tonight, or anytime recently, you know it's true. Critical Mass has been thoroughly domesticated - we are subjects, in Foucault's sense of being subjugated. It was a guided law enforcement tour, complete with every pointless rule in the book being shouted by 'lead cop.' Time for a New Mass, another time, another place, with hundreds of us. Mass is no longer were it's at for the biking community. We need something new, and soon ...
