Nashville Tells Bush To Go Home

Tennessee, 07.09.2006 05:09

Nashville, TN: Four hundred protesters turned out on Wednesday to protest Bush's visit to Nashville. Members the Nashville Peace Coalition held a protest on Wednesday, August 30th on the occasion of President Bush's appearance at a $2100 a plate fundraiser for Senate Candidate Bob Corker. The protesters gathered on the public sidewalks in the area around Loews Vanderbilt Plaza calling for an end to the war in Iraq. Members of the Peace Coalition and concerned voices gathered to give voice to the President's unacceptable domestic and international policies. "President Bush's policies have been unacceptable with regard to spying on US citizens, torture and detainment without trial and excessive secrecy about government actions," says Eric Schechter of the Nashville Peace Coalition, "He has been taxing the poor and not the rich, pretending that global warming does not exist, and selling out the environment to big corporations."

A.V. Norrell Elemetary Flooded with Toxic Sewage: Is the building safe for our children?

Richmond, 06.09.2006 22:08

With Northside students set to return to class after summer break, the recent bout of rain has flooded the grounds of A.V. Norrell Elementary School on Fendall Ave in Battery Park. The school, originally built on top of a refuse landfill in 1965, is also suffering from a ruptured sewage line that was damaged during tropical depression Gaston two years ago. This problem was not fixed, however, because the sewer pipes are inaccessible beneath a layer of toxic trash remains that lies underneath a recently built golf course next to the school. The combination of recent heavy rains and contaminated soil has created a noxious smell and a possibly unsafe environment for children.

Nestle Corporation & McCloud's Water - Globalization at our Backdoor

Rogue Valley, 06.09.2006 20:09

Nestle corporation & McCloud's aquifer - This is Globalization At Our Backdoor.

Nestle monopolizing a watershed is exactly what the anti-WTO protests are about stopping. Here we have it in our neighborhood, at our backdoor, and we sit and watch?

Northern California is a 3rd world nation.

I appeal to the WTO Seattle crew, the WTO Sacramento crew, and the world wide anti Globalization movement to step forward and stop this privatization of community resources from happening. NESTLE MUST GO.

The Perma-Revolution: An Anarchist Perspective

San Diego, 05.09.2006 23:38

The decline of the anti-globalization movement in the US and the amazing surge of support by anarchists after the devastation of hurricane Katrina suggests a new political and tactical alignment is possible in North America. We propose that anarchists need to work with the peak oil, permaculture and bioregional communities to better prepare ourselves for this new alignment.

Anarchists need to learn from our permaculturalist comrades the skills that will enable us to help people who most need aid during times when the state and capital refuse to offer it. We need to learn to create sustainable autonomous zones that can seriously challenge the power of the Government and the Capital.

Fairford Trial: Day 1

Bristol, 05.09.2006 22:37

City Vigil Puts Iraq War on Trial "I can only hope that the jury in this case shows..wisdom, and [finds] these two brave and honourable people not guilty." Simon writes: After three and a half years of legal wrangling, the trial of Dr Margaret Jones and Paul Milling for conspiracy to cause criminal damage at Fairford air base in March 2003 began yesterday (4th September). If convicted, they face up to ten years in jail. A diverse, colourful and dignified group of well-wishers and supporters turned up to hold a vigil outside Bristol Crown Court. The legal argument being used by the prosecution goes something like this; The government is democratically elected, and once elected the government can do what they damn well like, without being accountable to the people or to a court of law...On the basis of just the prosecution’s opening statement, things are looking quite bleak, but the defendants can take some comfort from a very similar case which was tried in Ireland, in which the 'Pitstop Ploughshares' were acquitted of causing unlawful damage to a US Air Force supply plane at Shannon airport in February 2003 (see ). I can only hope that the jury in this case shows the same wisdom, and find these two brave and honourable people not guilty. Gettysburg was different 10 years ago, there was a counterculture scene then, and the ideals of freedom and respect were commonplace, in an overly conservative area.

The Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition Pushes Forward

Portland, 05.09.2006 17:08

A small but intent crowd gathered Sunday at SW Salmon and Park to underline the need for serious reform of federal immigration laws. Attendees included farmworkers, union members, church-goers, socialists and anarchists.

The mobilization coincided with a national Labor Day Weekend effort to keep the pressure on lawmakers. Congress has been deliberating the question of immigration reform since the severely anti-immigrant HR 4437 passed the House in December of 2005, only to meet with unprecedented grassroots opposition. Organizers from the Portland Immigrants Rights Coalition say they are not supporting any of the current forms of the legislation because they all contain measures that would introduce severe hardship on some, if not all, immigrants.

Following a short rally, the group marched around downtown Portland, chanting and waving flags of the United States, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and other countries of immigrant origin. The group tightened and gained energy and focus as it moved. It paused briefly to address the offices of GOP gubernatorial candidate Ron Saxton, who has taken a strong anti-immigrant stance. Upon return, attendees set about to sign a huge fabric scroll that will be sent to Congress along with the PIRC's position statement.

Josh Wolf Update: Grand Jury Resister Josh Wolf Released on Bail!

Portland, 05.09.2006 07:38

Thanks for coming out today! It feels great to be a free man again and I hope that the 9th circuit's decision to grant me bail is indicative of the court's outlook that that I should not be held in contempt for asserting my constitutional rights as a journalist before the Federal grand jury. They've concluded that my appeal is not frivolous or simply for delay, so that's a positive sign, and I have confidence that these vital rights that are, at the core, essential to the practice of journalism will eventually be recognized at the Federal level; if not through the courts than at least through congress.

As the late Senator Paul Wellstone once said, "Significant social change comes from the bottom up, from an aroused opinion that forces our ruling institutions to do the right thing." I think that history demonstrates this to be true and it is an honor that I've been given the opportunity to help ignite what I hope will eventually cement the rights of both the independent and the established media.

Another successful Oak Grove Peace vigil, Saturday September 2

Portland, 05.09.2006 07:38

Even though it was a holiday weekend and some of our regular vigilers were working the Clackamas County Democratic Party table at the Oregon state fair, we had an excellent turnout last Saturday, September 2, for our Oak Grove peace vigil at McLoughlin (99E) and Oak Grove Boulevards. in Oak Grove, an event which takes place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month from 12 noon to 1 pm. Twenty-four people were there, several of them for the first time.

Arriving a bit late at about two minutes after 12 noon, I noticed
that an enthusiastic chorus of honking horns and cheers from passers by had already started sounding off. And it occured to me then that even though we were only a small group, we nevertheless were raising a lot of consciousness because anyone within earshot could easily observe the reception we were getting and know that if he or she were opposed to the war, they were not alone -- that they in fact shared the opinion of the majority. And those few who had something negative to say -- there are always a few -- seemed not so bold as when we first started 16 weeks ago.

Labor Day: Reportback from the Annual Picnic Ritual

Portland, 05.09.2006 07:38

Thousands of workers representing unions as diverse as AFSCME, SEIU, the Teamsters, the Carpenters, the Longshoremen, and etc showed up at the annual Oaks Park Labor Day picnic today. I often attend this event, and have been very conflicted about it. I think I've finally figured out why.

I feel a guilty sort of pleasure at the whole amusement park atmosphere. I mean, it's not something I would usually do, and it feels weird to find myself there. It becomes something of an identity crisis for me when I run into people I know from other parts of my life, people who make remarks about how they would never have thought that this would be "my kind of thing," whatever that means. And in a sense, they're right.
