Excerpt from UN speech 9/16/05: Friends of the world...the United Nations has exhausted its model, and it is not all about reform. The XXI century claims deep changes that will only be possible if a new organization is founded. This UN does not work. We have to say it. It is the truth. read the full speech...

Excerpt from UN Speech 9/20/06: Yesterday, ladies and gentlemen, from this rostrum, the president of the United States, the gentleman to whom I refer as the devil, came here, talking as if he owned the world. Truly. As the owner of the world. I think we could call a psychiatrist to analyze yesterday's statement made by the president of the United States. As the spokesman of imperialism, he came to share his nostrums, to try to preserve the current pattern of domination, exploitation and pillage of the peoples of the world.

Bullet holes in Lukus Glenn's grandmother's apartment

Portland, 25.09.2006 15:38

The Grandmother of Glen Lukas feared for her life inside her apartment when shots rang out and went through her walls and window almost striking her! There is a lot going on here. The parents were interrogated for 6 hours afterwards WITHOUT an attorney. They have not been told when the Grand Jury is meeting or anything! This is going to be one hell of a fight, for I am going to help them through this. Yamhill County police are upset over the actions taken by the Hillsboro Police, and so are ALOT of people in that county, for if Yamhill Police would have came as should of been, Lukas would still be with us. read more + see more photos...4/22/88 - 9/16/06 Justice for Lukus Glenn Do not make an opinion as the media has, for there is much more than what is being reported. They are trying to say things like "by the book", and even "suicide by police", but I tell you, it was murder by police.

Murder by police. For among cries from his family and friends to the police were "Don't shoot him! Use a tazor or something! Leave him alone! Lukus baby, come here to me, I won't let anyone hurt you", and Lukus yelling to his father and mother, "They are going to kill me!" It was seconds after the police shot him with beanbags, after crumpling to the ground, that he turned towards his mother and took a step out of fear for his life, Yes, even people in a suicidal mental state still value their life; otherwise, they would kill themselves immediately, when the police shot him in the back.

Declaration of Peace - nonviolent action

Portland, 25.09.2006 15:38

On Thursday September 21, 2006, 9 people attempted to deliver a Declaration of Peace, which calls for an end to the war in Iraq, to Senator Gordon Smith's office in Portland, OR. They were stopped from entering the building by police and security, so they sat down, refusing to move until they were all allowed in.

As the building (The Portland World Trade Center) is on private property, they were were later charged with trespassing. So much for being able to petition our representatives.

James Chasse: Beaten and Murdered by Police

Portland, 25.09.2006 15:38

James Chasse was murdered by the Portland police. He was tazed, kicked in the head, beaten, jumped on, and hog tied. And then he "mysteriously" died in police custody. I saw a picture of him on the "beat goes on" thread on this site. It made me want to know more about him.

When the police kill someone in this city, too often they are allowed to define who that person was. Through the police officers' apologist mouthpieces in the corporate media, all we ever learn is a few extraneous facts, usually not even accurate. Whether the person ever did drugs or not, we are fed snippets to make us believe they were a drug addict. If they were ever in trouble with the law, we are told that. If they were poor or homeless or somehow different than the Brady Bunch family, we are told those details. But never anything more. We are never given a real picture of the real human being whose living and breathing flesh was so terribly assaulted by the police state that they have been added to the long list of people who gave their lives to the Force. The brute force of power crazed thugs in uniform.

A bigger question loomed in this election: the question of political power, particularly in African and Caribbean communities. When Brooklyn Democratic head Clarence Norman, one of the most powerful men in the New York State assembly, was convicted on embezzlement charges, it represented the overall weakening of the Black political center in New York City.

E-coli Outbreak Leads to Removal of Bagged Spinach from Shelves Nationwide

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.09.2006 00:08

On September 14th, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert to consumers about an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 in multiple states. The FDA has warned that people should not eat any fresh spinach, or salad mixes that were grown in Monterey County, San Benito County, or Santa Clara County. 171 people are reported to have been sickened, and two deaths seem to be linked to the E-coli. The cause of the contamination has not been determined, but it appears not to be linked to organic farming practices.

Duck Shot Dick and the Malcontents

Rochester, 24.09.2006 23:07

dick/a> [permalink] September 22, 2006--Dick Cheney, Second War Criminal in command, continues to be hounded by malcontents where ever he goes.

The Duck Shot Veep stopped by Rochester Friday afternoon to raise money for Randy Kuhl, another Republican with Guns in the proverbial [and literal?--Ed.] closet.

A Democrat and Chronicle article reported that for a mere 1000 US Dollars admirers could get their picture taken with Cheney. So from about 4pm til 5:30pm some local Fat Cats braved the near 500-member strong anti-Cheney demonstrations downtown to sneak into the Riverside Convention Center on Main Street.

There were two protest events. An anti-war protest was called for Friday afternoon, after news of the Cheney visit hit the press. An Ad Hoc group consisting of Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace, Rochester Against War, RIT Antiwar (a chapter of the Campus Antiwar Network), the International Socialist Organization and many other Rochester-area peace groups and individuals organized the event.

The event started with Speakers and Chanting in Washington Square Park on Court Street. The Throng then marched the 3 Blocks along Clinton, and Main Streets to the area accross from the Riverside convention Center.

The Rochester Police Department guarded the front of the Convention Center, but no major confrontations were reported.

The other protest event was called by ADAPT Rochester, a disability rights group.

A release sent by ADAPT reads: "While Kuhl's campaign collects $1000 from each person that wants their photo with the Vice President - our people are stuck in institutions, living on $35 per month. While Kuhl's campaign collects $150 for everyone attending the dinner fundraiser - our people are stuck in institutions, with little or no meal choice. While Vice President Cheney flies back out of town, our people still don't have accessible, affordable, integrated housing."

San Diego Side of the First Cross-Border Encuentro: Part One

San Diego, 24.09.2006 22:38

As part of the First Cross-Border Encuentro of La Otra Campaña, the Colectivo Zapatista de San Diego organized a meeting on the San Diego side at Voz Alta. On Friday, Sept 15, about 20 compañer@s watched a film about the Zapatistas and La Otra, and participated in a discussion regarding Zapatismo, listening, women in revolutionary movements, organizing in San Diego and other topics. A partial transcript of the discussion follows.

"One thing I learned from the Zapatistas is that over here in the Estados Unidos we overanalyze a lot of things. If something didn't work, it's like WHY DIDNT IT WORK? ~~~ One thing we do have to learn from each other here is how to listen, how to step back and listen. ~~~ It is hard to really believe in something right now. With organizing and mobilizations, we lose momentum in a lot of things we do, and this movement seems like it continues its momentum in terms of its organizing. ~~~ We do live in a patriarchical society and world. I think it is very important for us mujeres to say ya basta, it's time to speak up and for people to listen. ~~~ Sometimes it is not so much like women's problems, but fucking machismo. And you know machismo is just like egocentrism. The taking up of space from other people and not stepping back, ever. ~~~ A lot of the time movements take into consideration women as a question or something that is secondary. In the Zapatista movement, they play a primary role. ~~~ There are a lot of people who are like "oh, the Zapatistas are coming, wow, let's go!" Yeah that's also a part of it, so we can also learn from them, but it's how can we bring it back home? ~~~ These people in business suits making all these big decisions, and those kinds of ways of thinking are in me."

"Every time through history, we analyze history, every time we change the political structure of a country, it's through revolution. ~~~ Another thing that we lack is the basic understanding of collectivity. You said the Zapatistas should take power, but when I think about the compañer@s that I have worked with all my life, seriously, I don't trust any of the organizations that I work with, even though I have given my life to them, to take power. ~~~ On this side we are inside the belly of the beast. So, what can we do here, so that we can build an anti-capitalist movement here, that can parallel and support the movement that is being created in Mexico? ~~~ I don't think that revolution should be the next step. What good is it to be killing each other. Who is going to be left for us to build our world? ~~~ You gotta have your good times, you can't fight a revolution just being bitter about things, you have to have your culture, you have to have your music, you gotta apply all of these things within your revolution, or its not worth having. If we start building community, the struggle will come within that, and we will be there together."

Tijuana Taxi Drivers Hit Wall of Greed

San Diego, 24.09.2006 20:38

Maria Sanchez Guzman, a single mother who lives in the colonia Flores Magon waited for over an hour alongside the dusty road for a taxi to take her across Tijuana to to the maquiladora factories. Finally, someone told her that the taxis she had ridden for 12 years would no longer be coming.

The jobs of 6,000 middle-class, independent taxi owners along with support personnel, wiped out in one day. Tens of thousands of workers suddenly without adequate, reliable transportation. Why is the corporate media in our border region not covering this outrageous situation? Because their reporters would have to tell the ugly story about a political party, the PAN, which seeks to destroy the middle-class to create a thin layer of wealth at the top. This is the new world order of corporate owned capitalism - using public services to finance private wealth.

Protesters occupy runway at East Midlands Airport

United Kingdom, 24.09.2006 11:39

A group of 21 protesters have breached security at East Midlands Airport this morning (24th Sep 0755am) and occupied one of the operational taxi-runways. The group 'Plane Stupid' says its 'Britain’s first national direct action campaign group opposing the growth in aviation and the government’s plans for airport expansion.'

The group has occupied the runway by being chained to each other and have set up tents saying 'Climate Camp 2'. Baptist minister Malcolm Carroll is taking part in the action and is leading a memorial service for the victims of the effects of climate change. Spokesman Joss Garman of the group says: 'an estimated 150.000 people die of the effects of climate change each year, that's the equivelant of a 9-11 every week.'

At midday armed police, dog units, firebrigade and helicopter were present and it was expected they would start clearing the runway. Unlike the what the BBC have been reporting, most flights leaving have the airport have been suspended.

NYC public schools are fast becoming revolving doors of 3-year internships for ambitious, well-meaning kids, often from elite colleges, who are on their way to bigger and better things: law school, business school, medical school (The New York Times, 10/2/05). This de-professionalization/peace-corp-ing of the teaching profession in New York City is demeaning, a threat to New York City teaching professionals, and an aggressive attempt to turn back the clock on ninety years of New York City teacher activism.
