Funeral and Memorial for Lukus Glenn: Saturday

Portland, 27.09.2006 02:38

Lukus David Glenn, April 22nd, 1988 - September 16th, 2006: Lukus David Glenn was shot and killed by Washington County Sheriff's Deputies Friday night / Saturday Morning. We have two close friends that sadly had to witness their best friend malaciously shot to death when other "non-leathal" force could have been used. The police are trying to "Justify" their actions. However since there were two eye witnesses there, we know the truth and now that the media has been covering it and bringing more and more evidence to the public, they are learning the truth as well. The media has now begun to show that the police are more likely to be in the wrong instead of how it started with the "police having no other choice but to shoot because of the extreme threat of an 18-year-old with a 3 inch blade".

Basically Luke had gone home and was smart and mature enough not to drive because he had been drinking. He had gotten into an argument with his parents and they called the cops for "help" with calming him down. What the police did, was not "help". How are we supposed to trust Police who are supposed to "protect and serve" when unjustifiable actions are taken such as those with Lukus David Glenn...

New NAYA Youth Center in NE Portland

Portland, 27.09.2006 00:38

When Nichole June Maher scans the surroundings at the new Native American Youth and Family Center in north Portland, she is acutely aware of the area's cultural significance and Native history.

NAYA's new home is located in a busy industrial area near the Columbia Slough. In previous centuries, this land rang with the sounds of Chinook families who set up summer villages to harvest an abundance of fish. A forested trail behind the center leads to a former encampment.

"It's just really fantastic to be in this space where, for thousands of years, this tribe lived," Maher, the center's executive director, said. "We have youth who are Siletz and Grand Ronde, and Chehalis and Chinook, and they all have ancestors from this area."

Met Life to Stuy Town Tenants: Middle Class My Ass! (Indypendent)

NYC, 26.09.2006 19:38

Met Life advertises the market-rate apartments as “luxury” and charges thousands of dollars for them—not bad for a complex that many tenants referred to as “projects.” “Stuy Town set the mold for urban redevelopment. The government gave a huge gift to Met Life, condemning the land and turning it over to Met Life with large-scale displacement of poor people,” said tenant historian Roberta Gold. || Full Story

Racist Violence in National City Saturday

San Diego, 26.09.2006 16:38

National City was the scene of a near-riot on Satuday when police blockaded protesters in with a crowd of 200 white-supremacist minutemen and the Minutemen took the opportunity to pepper spray non-violent demonstrators, many dressed as clowns, knock them to the floor and kick them. The Minutemen had staged a large protest against National City's plan to become a Sanctuary City, which would mean that no city funds can be used to enforce immigration laws.

Unsurprisingly, the local corproate media has gone out of their way to take an explicitly racist stance on the situation, supporting the minutemen's claim that they sprayed water at the protesters. Channel 8 showed a video of a minuteman laying on top of demonstrators, who were lying on the ground in agonizing pain getting their eyes rinsed out, and claiming sarcastically that he was hurt too and that they were faking. Channel 8 said that the Minutemen claim that the demonstratros were "faking it". Channel 10 went out of their way on Sunday morning to show a report saying that clearly the protesters were faking because they were wearing sunglasses, showing a clip of one demonstrator before getting sprayed wearing sunglasses instead of showing him on the ground with red tearing eyes for half an hour.

The video linked here clearly shows Gabriel Pollach, a violent racist who spends his mornings screaming racial slurs and threats of sexual violence at day laborers, with a yellow can of pepper spray in his hand, spraying two demonstrators in the face.

Somerville residents take action

Boston, 26.09.2006 15:08

A CD blasting the reggae beats of the group “Spearhead” and holding a couple of symbolic rainbow-colored peace flags, a dozen residents of Somerville gathered at Davis Square this evening to urge their neighbors to take action. Mathew Hochman believes that now is the time, “During the Vietnam War, people didn’t start shouting bring the troops home before the fifth year!”

50-60,000 People Demonstrate In Manchester, UK

Portland, 26.09.2006 13:38

Despite MSM reports of just 10,000, over 50,000 activists, politicians, religious groups and members of the public gathered in Manchester today, to demonstrate against the criminal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to also call for British Prime Minister Tony Blair to step down.

Organised by Stop the war Coalition, CND, BMI and MAB, and supported by Islam Channel, Friends of Al Aqsa, CWU, PCS, NUJ, TGWU, RMT, BECTU, UCU, we marched from Albert Square, through Lower Mosley Street to Deansgate and back to Albert Square via Cross Street.

A "Die-in" took place at G-Mex Centre at around 2:30pm, where the Labour Conference is taking place, we laid down on the road to symbolise the appalling carnage resulting from Bush and Blair's illegal war in Iraq. The entire march went ahead without any problems and remained peaceful at all times. Police presence was strong but it was clear many police officers were in support of the demonstration, making a refreshing change.

HUNGARY RIOTS: An eyewitness account + videos

Portland, 26.09.2006 13:38

On this Monday, the protests continued, and the number of protesters multiplied by early evening into the 10'000+. I was surprised to see the majority of participants were apparently not socially disadvantaged poor folks who are most critically impacted by current economical restrictions, but middle-class people from middle-class families like me, predominantly in their 20s to 40s. There was pretty high agitation as well as anger -- when we were not shouting slogans or listening to various self-made spokesmen on a made-shift loudspeaker system, most of us were freely talking with people we met for the first time. Just as I expected, I found out that the majority of us were those who voted NOT for the current governing coalition, but there were also a smaller number of their voters present, those who turned really bitter and pissed about laying their trust into them. As could be expected, oddballs, radicals and extremists appeared as well, I estimate less than 500 in total for the radical/extreme right folks, that including the soccer hooligans.

Sometimes after 22:00 we heard a lot of shouting that there was something heavy happening at the main public broadcast TV building, that used to be the state-owned regime TV station in the old days. The TV building is a historically prominent place because of its key role during the 1956 Revolution -- the '56 revolution exploded with the people taking over this state-owned TV and starting their broadcasts to mobilise the rest of the country.

palestine journal: 18 sep 2006

Portland, 26.09.2006 13:38

well....here i am, still in this prison known as the west bank. we went to ramallah this weekend, and to a christian village outside ramallah called taybeh, where there was an 'Octoberfest'.....the festival was well-attended (despite the anger among muslims over the pope's comments about islam last week, the festival in the christian town went fine...no christians in palestine have been attacked, but some churches were burned in a couple of places). at the festival, we watched young kids and teenagers performing the palestinian traditional dance known as 'dabke' - they were great! it reminded me of irish step dancing with the fancy footwork and stamping on the wooden stage. and the kids were all really excited about it, they loved doing it (unlike some of the kids in the irish step i used to do -- especially the boys -- who were just doing it because their parents made them).

then there was a performance by a palestinian hip-hop group from Lud, a town inside Israel.....and watching the villagers' reaction to the hip-hop - interested, entertained, but not really _jamming_ (like they were with the traditional music and dance), it made me think about the origins of hip-hop.....it is essentially, and at its core, an _urban_ music.....it began in the states, of course, but has been popularized as a form of expression in urban centers throughout the world - i've heard rappers from johannesburg, paris, london, hamburg with tons of talent, at least as much as many of the US-based rappers.....but it is a type of music that springs out of a people desperate to hold onto an identity that they feel being lost in the anonymous centralizing process of cities. kids from the village, stuck behind the israeli wall, but still strong in their culture and traditions, simply don't have the same type of experience as the kids from the villages-turned-urban-ghettoes that have come to typify the experience of palestinians inside israel. hip-hop just doesn't resonate as strongly for the villagers as it does for the kids lost in urban centers throughout the world.

Contamination Risk At Packers Field

Bristol, 26.09.2006 10:38

a Maria Walsh writes: Easton children are being put at risk of contamination from unsafe levels of lead, arsenic and hydrocarbons exposed by the building site at packers. Toxic soil dug up from Packers Field has been left 'uncapped' by developers, causing a potential health risk to local children. Packers field in Easton is being controversially converted from community playing fields into playing fields and a running track by the City Academy. Environmental Health officers from Bristol City Council stated that levels of lead, arsenic and hydrocarbons in Packers soil, were in some cases double the acceptable safe limits for residential areas. Lead contamination is particularly dangerous for the under six's. Backing on to the Packers site is The Limes Nursery School and Whitehall Primary school neither of which were informed about the possible risk of contamination even though Ray Priest, headteacher of the City Academy and other developers, have known for some time. While most of Easton's soil contains these toxins as a result of the area's mining history, health problems are unlikely because most of the soil is capped by topsoil or grass which prevents contamination. Soil which has been disturbed should be kept wet to prevent fine particles spreading the contamination but contractors D.F. Blanchard have failed to do this. speculation & squatting

Barcelona, 26.09.2006 08:09

You won't get a home in your fucking life.Housing: a basic right, not a merchandise for speculators

The 47th Spanish constitution article states that all citizens have the right to have a decent house, that the Public Authorities will make effective this right, that they will impede speculation and the community will participate from the added value generated from town planning action. But far from this, Public Authorities do nothing to make this right effective neither do they anything to impede the prices increase that turns the act to get a house into a nightmare and cause a huge money transfer from wage-earners to construction and finance companies.

Emergency Mt. Ashland City Council Meeting

Rogue Valley, 26.09.2006 05:09

There is new information which with your help can save our Ashland Water Shed. The Roadless Rule has been re-instated by the federal government, and Mt. Ashland is on the list of protected roadless areas. Because the expansion project of the Mt. Ashland Association has not yet begun and almost one half of the expansion project is in the McDonald Roadless Area, there is the possibility of stopping the clear-cutting.

There will be an emergency meeting of the Ashland City Council on Tuesday, September 26th at 1:00 PM at 51 Windburn Way across from Lithia Park regarding the Mt. Ashland water shed issue.

Charge dropped in Chicago-related Israeli Torture Case

Chicago, 26.09.2006 05:08

From the newswire: "Prosecutors on Friday, September 22, dropped one of three charges against a Chicago-area man whose false confession under torture in Israel may be largely admitted against him in a Federal trial next month.

Muhammad Salah, a U.S. citizen of Palestinian birth, and husband and father, will stand trial with a codefendant beginning October 12, in a prosecution that until now has been portrayed as “the Hamas money-laundering case.”

But the U.S. attorney’s office dropped the charge of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, apparently in direct response to successful questioning of an FBI informer’s credibility by the defense." Read more.
