Textron Cluster Bombs Focus of Vigil in Wilmington MA

Boston, 06.10.2006 16:08

Northampton, Mass -- About 80 people joined the Northampton (MA) Committee to Stop the War in Iraq yesterday to protest Textron Systems based in in Wilmington, Mass., for its manufacture of cluster bombs. The vigil took place outside the plant to call on all people of conscience to oppose the use of cluster munitions and to actively work to end the manufacture and sale of cluster bombs. The Northampton Committee initiated this protest after one of its founding members, Frances Crowe, 87 of Northampton, learned of Textron's role in the production and sale of cluster munitions. Since then Merrimack Valley People for Peace, Traprock Peace Center, Code Pink of western Massachusetts as well as Progressive Democrats of America/Massachusetts, Northampton Chapter have endorsed the protest in Wilmington, Massachusetts.

Some Notes after the World Can't Wait Protest

NYC, 06.10.2006 16:08

I went to the World Can't Wait protest and, I have to say, I needed that. A lot of young people involved, people fired up, and beautiful weather: who can complain? That said, I had a few thoughts which I thought I'd share for the few activists reading this. [Photos || World Can't Wait -- For What?]

TA Tells Disabled Fan to 'Go Home' Instead of Yankee Playoff Game

NYC, 06.10.2006 15:38

For Emil Dammling, a 72-year-old wheelchair user from West Haven , Connecticut , attending New York City sporting events are the biggest thrills of his life. He was thrilled to have tickets to Tuesday night's playoff game at Yankee Stadium and took MetroNorth all the way from New Haven to Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal, but that thrill would soon turn to dismay when he discovered that the elevator from the street to the mezzanine was out of service, an all to frequent occurrence according to disability advocates.

Shlomo, mon ami

DC, 06.10.2006 06:09

In Beyond Chutzpah I argued that across the political spectrum historians have now reached a broad consensus on the Israel-Palestine conflict's origins. A recent study strikingly confirms this thesis. Shlomo Ben-Ami was Israel's Foreign Minister and key Israeli negotiator at the Camp David and Taba meetings in 2000-1. In his new book, Scars of War, Wounds of Peace: The Israeli-Arab Tragedy (Oxford: 2006), Ben-Ami covers a lot of the same ground as my own Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict (Verso: 2003).

First Member of SHAC 7 Begins Jail Sentence

San Francisco Bay Area, 06.10.2006 00:39

On October 3rd, Andrew Stepanian started a three-year prison term, becoming the first person to do time under the Animal Enterprise Protection Act. Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) activists were not accused of causing physical damage to property or people. They were convicted of targeting Huntingdon Life Sciences by maintaining a website which contained information that could potentially be used to commit a crime. Congress has been working to pass more laws offering special protection for businesses that profit from the use of animals and restricting the free speech of peaceful activists.

Argentinian film makers screen Indymedia film in Nottingham

United Kingdom, 05.10.2006 19:38

Argentinian film makers including director Andres Ingoglia will visit Nottingham next week as part of the european tour of their film "i". The film is a meditation on the relationship between media and power as it is manifested by the worlds largest all volunteer network of media activists: 'Indymedia'. The feature-length documentary follows the first year of a small collective in Buenos Aires as it struggles amidst assassinations, a collapsing economy, and a whirlwind of political upheaval.

The film will be screened as a one-off in Nottingham at the Sumac Centre on Thursday 12th October, where the film's director will introduce the film and answer questions. Food will be served from 6pm and the film starts at 7.30pm at the Sumac Centre, 245 Gladstone Street, Forest Fields, Nottingham. During its UK tour the film is also screened in London, Brighton, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

B52 disarmers on trial this week

United Kingdom, 05.10.2006 19:38

The trial of two Oxford peace activists who attempted to disarm B52 bombers on their way to Iraq is taking place all this week. Toby Olditch and Phil Pritchard went into Fairford airbase just two days before the planes were used, hoping to disable the bombers and thus save civilian lives in Iraq and inspire others to action.

They were arrested before reaching the planes but have gone on to fight a high-profile legal battle, using their case to challenge the legality of the war and raise awareness. The upshot of this has been that various courts, up to and including the House of Lords, spinelessly (but predictably) refusing to allow arguments about the legality of the war. The legal argument for the trial now focuses on Phil and Toby's reasonable belief that they were acting to prevent war crimes.

Support at court is very welcome during the trial, either to come inside or with banners etc outside; Bristol Crown Court is on Small Street, off Corn Street, in Bristol town centre. Check the trial blog for the latest updates.

Margaret Jones and Paul Milling's trial for a similiar action resulted in a hung jury recently and they are awaiting a re-trial.

Meanwhile a Peace Picnic takes place this Saturday 7th October at RAF Croughton, a local US/UK spybase.

Global Warning on Bristol Airport Expansion

Bristol, 05.10.2006 17:38

Airport South West's fastest growing source of emissions Airport South West's fastest growing source of emissions As the Independent reports, "Global warming devastates sea ice in Arctic Circle", Crash writes; In a few days time, the final Masterplan for Bristol International Airport is to be published. It is expected to propose the fastest growth of any airport in the UK, including a doubling of flights to nine million passengers a year and a massive increase in car parks in Bristol's Green Belt, resulting in increases in traffic on roads in Bristol and North Somerset of such a scale that a whole network of new and expanded roads will be needed. The effect will be to effectively cancel out all efforts to reduce emissions in the south west, with government figures indicating that the airport will be emitting as much CO2 every minute as the average household produces in a year. Indymedia at the Camp for Climate Action 2006: Report & Personal View

United Kingdom, 05.10.2006 16:08

During the Climate Camp, the field IMC media centre was open for a minimum of five hours each day (two and a half each morning and evening), with these limited opening hours primarily aimed to conserve power. Some days it was open longer, and it ran fully all day for two days until about midnight during the main day of action.

Mostly the imc ran on bio-diesel, but there was also a renewables power feed and some battery capacity. Twelve P1 laptops running via an LTSP server from Bristol Wireless provided the core public access, plus varying at different times up to five more modern laptops were running.

Two tents provided the main structures, one for the main imc / Public Access Point and one more as storage and kitchen. Chairs came from a social centre in Manchester, and table tops were donated by TRIM timber recycling of Manchester. 6 tables were set up balanced on top of hay bales (looking very rustic) while another 6 table tops had very sturdy legs masterfully constructed from scrap timber. The satellite dish providing connectivity from Psand was similarly balanced on top of four hay bales, but was in fact rock solid once ratcheted down - again a nice mix of rustic charm with hi tech.

Around 145 pictures were published direct from the field IMC, including two mobile phone pics (non-automated). Dispatch had over 50 phone reports on the main day of action. Several audio interviews and video clips were published. One freelance videographer was arrested and had their footage seized by cops. There was lots of good filming going on, and on the Friday night, over one hour of rushes were screened in two different tents to an appreciative audience! Several different sections of these are now fully published in IMC UK's Climate Camp page. A big well done to all involved in setting up, running, participating and taking down the centre!
