Represje wobec uchodźców w Polsce

Poland, 11.10.2006 23:39

Uniemożliwiono im udział w akcji „NO LAGER” i pod eskortą policji w godzinach nocnych zawrócono do Lublina. Jeden z Czeczeńców został aresztowany.

Ridgewood Peace Protest Begins on October 14

NYC, 11.10.2006 16:38

Day after day news stories come out about more horrible things that are happening in Iraq. Every day there are more dead soldiers, more car bombs, more shootings and more cases of torture and humiliation. Why then, is it that the mainstream anti-war movement is only visible every 6 months or so to have a big march? If this war is going to end any time soon, there needs to be a well organized anti-war movement that is constantly visible. Democrats, greens, libertarians, socialists, anarchists and independents rarely agree on everything, but the one thing that they do all agree on is that it is time to stop the war. It is time to put aside our differences and unite for our common goal.

Guerilla Art at Columbia: Minuteman Debate Continues

NYC, 11.10.2006 16:38

Debate and actions at Columbia University continue, as new discourses have opened up about free speech, the role of campus organizing, and the role of the student in general. Many lines are (unfortunately? fortunately?) being drawn, between those that support the actions, and those that feel civil disobedience is out of line, as well as those who feel homeowork is more important than anything else. Nottingham family released from detention and deportation halted after dawn raid in Aspley earlier this week

United Kingdom, 11.10.2006 12:38

A family from Aspley, Nottingham have been released from Yarlswood Removal Centre near Bedford after local activists jumped into action following a dawn raid by 12 officers last week. Officers forced entry into the property and arrested the family including 2 children and a baby. The raid happened at around 5.30am on Wednesday 4th October. Children as well as staff at Roslyn Park School in Aspley were shocked by the news. Two of the families children have been at the school for over 5 years.

Within just a couple of days over 150 people signed a petition to stop the families deportation which was due to take place on Saturday 7th at around 5am. The flight was deffered and their deportation halted as the High Court decided a new barrister would be allowed to reassess their case. One of letters of support for the families current appeal states: "I feel strongly that the family should continue to reside in the United Kingdom, and that the children be allowed to continue to go to school".

CSOA il Molino: 10 anni di (r)esistenza

Switzerland, 11.10.2006 11:37

Christie Schaefer, Write-In Candidate State Senate Dist. 19

Portland, 11.10.2006 10:38

The most frequently asked questions about this campaign begin with "Why?" Why are we doing what we are? Why was I trying to get on the ballot? Why not just vote for a Democrat and hope for the best? Why a write-in campaign?

We are doing what we are doing- engaging in a write-in campaign in Oregon- to broaden the debate on such issues as the Iraq War, funding for schools, funding for health care, the erosion of democratic rights. All of these are issues which affect us on a daily basis and which have far-reaching consequences. We are doing it as a write-in campaing because, though we petitioned tirelessly, we did not, thanks in great part to HB 2614, passed by Democrats and Republicans in the State Legislature, get onto the ballot.

What's Happening to Housing?

United Kingdom, 11.10.2006 08:38

Construction work seems to be taking place on every corner of Liverpool city centre, tarting up town in time for the Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008. But within easy walking distance of this rich man's paradise project, some squalid homes are being starved of repair money, whilst other more than adequate dwellings are torn down. What is the Lib Dem(olition) council's agenda? Why, profits of course! All the rich newcomers will need somewhere to live, so poor people have to pay with their homes! But campaigners are fighting back...

What's Another Columbus Day?

Rochester, 11.10.2006 07:37

noColumbus/a> This past Monday was Columbus Day. How should one reflect on Columbus and the national holiday that allows children a day off from school, the closure of some institutions, and sales galore? Was Columbus the honorable sailor, adventurer, and navigator--devoid of misdeeds as the mythos states? Or were Columbus and his men responsible for the murder, rape, and brutality exacted upon an indigenous population ending in genocide? Do we want to live in a sterilized, fantasy environment? Or do we want to know the truth? Do we care?

Howard Zinn, speaking on the subject of school children learning about Columbus said, "It has to be done carefully. You don't want to crowd into their minds horrible pictures of violence and blood -- we don't want to do what the movies and television do to them all the time."

The author of A People's History of the United States continued, "And yet at the same time, we must not hide the truth from them. Because if you begin hiding the truth from them at that early age -- then it goes on and on."

James Loewen, the author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, calls Columbus a "racist killer" pointing out that the brutality inflicted by Columbus and his men through slavery, rape, and murder eventually lead to the indigenous population's annihilation. Loewen's book documents the failings of 12 US high school history textbooks citing "bland optimism, blind patriotism, and misinformation." In the case of Columbus, he found that the textbooks focused too much on Columbus the hero and downplayed or omitted his misdeeds.

"They would... take Indians from place to place with them -- as dog food -- as a kind of mobile dog food," said Loewen. "When they got to where they were going for the night, [they would] allow the dogs to tear one of them apart and eat them."

So, do we care? What's the point of making a moral judgement about a person who has been dead for over 500 years? Why worry about Columbus Day at all?

The Transform Columbus Day Alliance states that, "Columbus' actions set the foundation for legal and social policies -- still used today in United States, Mexico, Canada, South America and in many countries around the world."

It is those "legal and social policies" that continue to oppress, brutalize, dominate, and eradicate indigenous peoples today. Therefore, if we are moral people and we recognize that the foundation of the United States and its institutions were created through a tradition of aggression, domination, and colonialism and those same tendencies continue 500 years later (Iraq, for instance), then we, as citizens of the most privileged nation in the world, have a responsibility to halt the murder of indigenous peoples (indeed, all subjugated peoples) and the destruction of our earth by any means necessary. That is why we ought to care about the passing of yet another Columbus Day and the legacy it leaves in its wake.

Rove protest rally 10/9/06

Oklahoma, 11.10.2006 06:08

About 100 protesters gathered outside History Center in OK City, 10/9/2006, to demonstrate againt Rove-inspired and -promoted administration policies of war, corruption, lies and greed. Three counter protesters also were on hand-- a couple with a small child who told local TV that they were Bush supporters who just couldn't afford to attend the event. Those who could and did, were offered the opportunity to have their picture taken with Rove for a donation of $1000. No word on how much was raised or how many kool-aid drinkers sprung for a photo. More photos from the event here. Historical Landmarks Commission Continues the Kurisu Nightmare

Portland, 10.10.2006 21:38

Hoichi Kurisu, patriarch of the Kurisu International design firm, spoke yesterday to the Historical Landmarks Commission about the horrors of war. Hoichi was in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped and he talked of how the flash was so bright that shadows were burned onto the walls were people once stood. That story he told had very little to do with their proposed 4-story mixed use infill project, the Mississippi Garden Lofts.

The Landmarks Commission was a packed room, there were over 50 people in attendance including a number of folks planning developments on Mississippi Avenue, seeing the nightmare that they may have to go through.

After about a half hour of Bureau of Development Services Staff presentation supporting their denial of the Kurisu project, representatives from Holst Architecture spoke at length -- for nearly an hour -- about how they feel the proposed development meets the Community Design Guidelines, P1, P2, and D7.
