Euskal Herria, 03.09.2004 09:55

Released U-C IMC Reporters On Their Way Home

Urbana-Champaign, 03.09.2004 06:00

At approximately 10:10PM CDT just as the monthly UC IMC Steering group meeting was breaking up here in Urbana, we received word that the NYC reporting team were enroute back to Illinois. Thanks to all of them, who bore the brunt of state repression, and to their home team, which supported them here (and some of whom have not slept in several days, either!) The reporting has been top-notch under very difficult circumstances, but it should make clear that Indymedia will not be intimidated. Your donations are still needed to off-set the expenses incurred.

Gov't Attempts Subpoena For Indymedia Logs - Service Provider Refuses

Santa Cruz, CA, 03.09.2004 05:50

The FBI and the US Secret Service is again engaging in a fishing expedition to route out dissenting viewpoints, harass people who are simply exercising their free speech rights, and intimidate others from exercising their right to protest in connection with the Republican National Convention. To quote one indymedia volunteer, regarding New York Indymedia:

"It has come to my attention, that our hosting provider, Calyx Internet Access, has been under harassment and scrutiny by the United States Secret Service in a blatant attempt to disrupt our relationship. Furthermore, it has been revealed to me that my contact information, was required to be disclosed to the government, presumably to begin directly harassing me. The SS did not contact the IMC directly in relation to this matter, but instead felt it prudent to put a strain on a place which we do business with. The agents attempted to circumvent Indymedia by contacting Calyx by phone, originally without a warrant or subpoena, in order to obtain user connection logs regarding a particular post on an Indymedia site. The post in question is a repost by an anonymous person containing information that is already available all over the Internet, and publicly available in other forms."

[Subpoena (US law): to order someone to go to a court of law to answer questions, or to order the appearance of documents in a court of law ]

The subpoena is for information leading to the posters of a list of RNC Delegates.

Hens Liberated by ALF

Aotearoa, 03.09.2004 05:22

Just days after the leaking of the controversial new animal welfare code for layer hens, the Animal Liberation Front has raided Wellington battery hen farm Golden Gate. Several animals were rescued from the farm and released to the Campaign Against Factory Farming. The ALF also documented conditions inside the farm. [photos]

"The conditions in the farm that were witnessed by cell members were horrendous. Rats crawling through huge piles of manure, regular cages with eight hens, and huge feather loss." - ALF

If ratified, the welfare code will allow the use of the battery cages to continue for at least another 10 years.

DC, 02.09.2004 22:02

Photo from inside the detention, Pier 57, where most of the 1800 people were "detained", from 24 hours to almost 3 days, for protesting, or preemptively rounded up for standing near protests, occurring in NYC against the Republican National Convention. Currently 55 people are on hunger strike. There are couple hundred jail solidarity outside the detention, and the cops are surrounding the scene. Currently @700 people are being held, in spite of 3 judge's orders to release people. The latest court order was to release 470 people immediately. It is commonly understood that the police are stalling to keep people off the street until after George Bush gives his acceptance speech tonite, at 8pm. LIVE reports from protests: Webstreams 1 2

Call to Cyclists Arrested Around the Week of the RNC.

NYC, 02.09.2004 20:40

Time's Up! is collecting information from cyclists arrested around RNC events, whether part of demonstrations or not.

Over the past week, the NYPD has targeted cyclists and made nearly 400 bike arrests. They’ve confiscated even more bikes, in some cases cutting locks and taking bikes that were purportedly ridden by “protestors.” On Sunday, August 29th, without prior notification and without providing justification, the NYPD instituted a “bike-frozen zone” between 34th St. and 59th St., west of 6th Avenue Our confiscated bikes are being held in a facility in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and many of them are not scheduled to be released until our court dates, in some cases months from now

Tonight, Live from New York City-- Compassionate Conservatism Returns!

NYC, 02.09.2004 19:59

(from the Open Newswire): Compassionate conservatism? Wasn't that spun four years ago and promptly deleted when the Bush regime stole the White House? Well of course it was! That's what politicians are paid to do: lie through their expensive teeth and those phony smiles, all the while yuckin' it up over drinks at the club at all the choirboys and rednecks fool enough to buy their pitch, and even dumber to go half way across the world and die for them. You'll see and hear plenty of that bullshit tonight in Madison Square Garden, a venue pointed out recently by a writer in the New York Times as a place that is neither square nor a garden. That's fitting because King George's speech will neither sincere nor truthful.

Protester Release Extraordinarily Slow; NLG "Wonders Why."

NYC, 02.09.2004 16:18

Reports from 100 Center Street note that protesters picked during the previous days events are being released very, very slowly. A reporter with Michigan IMC says that most protesters have been in jail for approx. 40-48 hours, since Tuesday night.

According to a representative with the National Lawyers Guild (NLG): "They're obviously holding people for over the 24 hour limt. Its now the day Bush is in town for the RNC, and we're wondering why the New York court system would contunue to hold people this long."
