Police and paramilitaries extreme cruelty that bring us mourning by murder

The indymedia companion Brad Will has been murdered with the camera in his hands for the desire to show the world the injustices and the actual facts that are happening in Oaxaca.
At Oaxaca, like in many other locations, working people are being killed and injured. Peasants, teachers, activists, journalists... they've been attacked, imprisoned, injured, and unfortunately many of them murdered, by the pure fact of being aware of oppression, exploitation and the repression they and their companions suffer in defense of the cultivation lands, the workers' rights and the exploited Oaxaca people.

USUARIOS Y TRABAJADORES DE LA ROBER: VÍCTIMAS IGUALES DE UNA PÉSIMA GESTIÓN

estrecho / madiaq, 29.10.2006 18:08

Brad Will, Indymedia Reporter, Murdered While Reporting on Mexico Demonstration

Tennessee, 29.10.2006 07:11

Brad Will, 36, a documentary filmmaker and reporter for Indymedia in New York, Bolivia and Brazil, died today of a gunshot to the chest when pro-government attackers opened fire on a barricade in the neighborhood of Santa Lucia El Camino, on the outskirts of Oaxaca, Mexico. He died with his video camera in his hands. Brad went to Oaxaca in early October to document the story that Commercial Media simulators like Rebecca Romero of Associated Press distort instead of report: the story of a people sick and tired of repression and injustice, who take back the government that rightfully is theirs. In that context, his assassination is also a consequence of what happens when independent media must do the work that Big Media fails to do: to tell the truth. My friend and colleague since 1996 when we labored together at 88.7 FM Steal This Radio on New York’s Lower East Side, I bumped into him again in Bolivia in 2004 during a public reception held by the Narco News School of Authentic Journalism, and again on the Yucatán peninsula last January where he came to cover the beginnings of the Zapatista Other Campaign – Brad died to bring the authentic story to the world.

San Diego, 29.10.2006 06:08

The Coalition for Justice formed in San Diego after the September 3 shooting in Poway of Steve Foley by an off duty Coronado police officer.

This group of concerned citizens gathered Saturday morning, October 28, 2006 to drive in a motorcade to Coronado’s Spreckels Park to protest the broader issues of police shootings of unarmed citizens, lack of accountability of the police to taxpayers who pay their salaries, and lack of citizen oversight of police activities.

Oklahoma Coalition of Independents (OKIES) Form

Oklahoma, 29.10.2006 04:07

OKIES seeks to give Oklahoma voters more choice. OKIES seeks to give Oklahoma voters more choice. OKIES seeks to give Oklahoma voters more choice. Independents and third party members across Oklahoma recently formed to recruit Independent candidates and advocate open ballot access for third parties. The Oklahoma Coalition of Independents (OKIES) is made up of those who want their voice heard in state and local government, but do not fit into the two establishment parties. Members have many different views on specific policies, but agree that a government accountable to the people is essential. Oklahoma voters will have only one choice in 38 Oklahoma House elections this November. In those districts, independents and voters not in the party of the candidate and will have no say in electing their representatives. OKIES hopes to recruit candidates in potentially open districts so voters will have a choice. Oklahoma was also the only state in 2004 allowing just two choices for president. Half of the states had at least six candidates on the ballot. This is because Oklahoma has the most restrictive ballot access laws in the nation, forcing third party candidates to run as Independents or to be kept off the ballot. Over 200,000 Oklahomans are registered as Independents, about 11 percent of registered voters. Through our growing network, OKIES seeks to give these Oklahomans a stronger voice in their government.

Boston McDonald’s Hit by Protests Against Labor Abuse

Boston, 29.10.2006 02:08

BOSTON, MA – A group of young protesters braved the pouring rain to demonstrated at 3 local McDonald’s branches in downtown Boston today, Oct. 28. They were calling on fast-food giant McDonald’s to work with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) to help establish real labor rights for the workers who pick tomatoes for McDonald’s suppliers. The young protesters, several of whom wore colorful and scary “Ronald McDonald” halloween masks, entered the fast-food stores and distributed hundreds of leaflets documenting sweatshop conditions and human rights abuses in the Florida fields where McDonald’s tomatoes are grown.

Oaxaca - la dégradation

Switzerland, 29.10.2006 00:07

This new 6th Chapter of the Oklahoma Sustainability Network will focus on bringing together and unifying rural, suburban, and urban facets of sustainability—broadening to include a regional view of sustainability. We recognize that healthy urban communities depend upon healthy surrounding rural communities and vice-versa. This broadened focus is reflected in the name we've chosen—Sustainable Green Country. Sustainability is a multi-faceted concept addressing prosperity, fairness, and a healthy environment. These elements are interdependent - each can sustain its existence indefinitely only if the others are in balance. In 1987, the United Nations defined sustainability as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainable Green Country will emphasize developing relationships among diverse groups and building community throughout the region as the cornerstone of the group. We believe that "community" begins within the group so that it may be reflected in our larger purpose. Social events, networking opportunities, educational sharing events, regular open meetings and energetic working partnerships are some of the ways we look forward to building community. We have a profound dedication to true grassroots involvement and full participation in the organization by all of our members. We foresee many opportunities for full community involvement in directing goal setting and project concentration for the group. Effective, timely, and transparent communication are clear goals—both within our board structure and outside the board in our interaction with the greater public. We look forward to working collaboratively with other community groups and with all interested individuals. Sustainable Green Country will make concerted efforts toward developing representational diversity—cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, geographic—within the organization that is also reflected in our activities. In all that we do, we intend to maintain an appreciation for and recognition of all the volunteer efforts that propel the sustainability movement and forward the many goals that "sustainability" encompasses. With the founding of this group, we extend an open invitation to participate to everyone who would like to learn more about sustainability and to help move our families and all of northeastern Oklahoma in a more sustainable direction. We look forward to making our common sustainable vision our sustainable reality. Olympia Police Department Harass Critical Mass

Portland, 28.10.2006 16:39

Every last Friday of the month, Critical Mass rides through the streets of Olympia. Today folks got together to ride, leaving the Evergreen State College at 5:00 and reaching downtown about a half an hour later. In costumes and good spirits, waving and ringing bells, the ride started off on a positive note. In fact, it was the biggest ride ever, with rider-numbers at their highest ever. The ride, around 80 strong, reached downtown to be greeted by a number of police cars and four bike cops.

Most rides go over smoothly, but this time police were anticipating the ride. The police watched for any reason to harass riders, ticketing several riders throughout the ride for "unlawful" behavior. In response to the police harassment of the ride, one rider allegedly slashed the tires of a police officer's bike. As the man rode away, a cop ran after him, tackling and strangling him. He was put under arrest, and when another rider went to ask if he was okay, that rider was arrested as well.

After a lifetime of never owning a car, I recently got a job that is 30 mi. from home and not served by public transit. I brought my car this weekend when I came to visit your lovely city and I just wanted to apologize for driving though it.

I arrived on Sunday, just before sunset. Portland has always been something of a mind-fuck for me, an awesome city that reminds me so much of Minneapolis, a city I love. This week, I had some work-related business to take care of in Portland, and so I came early to check it out.

Some "Portland area blogs" force local MSM to try to get it right

Portland, 28.10.2006 16:39

Over the past few days, most of us have witnessed the fact that the MSM, usually very mute when it comes to questions of Officer Liability, has actually been exposing these thugs to treatment usually reserved for the more helpless among us. Today, the big kahuna actually ADMITTED that it was action from a "blog" that called attention to Officer Humphreys' violent history.

"After Portland police identified Humphreys as one of the officers involved in Chasse's death last month, an attorney who represented Miller posted a note on a local blog reporting Humphreys was involved in this prior excessive force complaint. Travis Eiva, said he did so because the allegations in the Miller case -- "officers standing over a man and beating him" -- were similar to the Chasse case."
