Sunday, October 29th: The Federal Invasion of Oaxaca City

Boston, 30.10.2006 16:11

On October 29th thousands of riot police from the Federal Preventative Police (PFP), armed with shields, batons, and automatic weapons, began the invasion of Oaxaca City, the capital of Oaxaca state, Mexico. The federal forces, under the cover of snipers in helicopters, are using light tanks, water cannons, and bulldozers to slowly remove the hundreds of barricades that have blocked the streets of Oaxaca City since the police were run out of town in June by protesters demanding the resignation of the state governor, Ulises Ruiz Ortiz.

Grants Pass Postal Service Picket Report Back

Rogue Valley, 30.10.2006 14:10

the message is clear - DON'T MESS WITH OUR MAIL SERVICE!

In the last six years the Postal Service has cut out nearly 100,000 APWU positions mostly clerks. That is nearly 1/3 of the workers from six years ago. The Medford Post Office, the mail processing plant for Southern Oregon, now works employees 7 days, 12 hour shifts and the mail still is not getting out in a timely manner- they just won't hire career employees to handle the workload.

Milwaukie Peace demonstration continues

Portland, 30.10.2006 08:39

When people began standing for Peace at Mcloughlin and Oak Grove Blvd. in Milwaukie early this year, they were coming to the street on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Gradually the group grew and enthusiasm from citizens made it seem right to be out there every Saturday. Today there were 20 to 25 people with signs, waving and flashing the Peace sign to motorists who for the most part honked and offered support. Jan Samoge and Greg Flynn brought their guitars and harmonica and sang. Though we stand for Peace in all seriousness, the added gift of the music lightened our spirits greatly. I noticed a lot more positive support today than when I was last at this vigil, though we still got a few (very few) thumbs down and other not so supportive gestures. We are not daunted. We will stand there with our message until this war is over.

Soliciting Litter

Portland, 30.10.2006 08:39

Last week upon arriving home from a sweltering day of sun bathing on my yacht and skinny dipping diving in the Willamette for three headed fish (two headed fish are so early 90's) I entered the courtyard of my palatial estate where two people were going about in a hurried form with yellow plastic bags hanging from their hands. I acknowledged their presence with a simple "hello", nod, and adieu. Receiving no audible response I thought "surely this is due to their focus and intent with the task at hand." That task, that sinister series of events which I became more familiar with over the following quarter of a fortnight was that they, or they and their kind, had littered about forty four identical 06-07 Yellow Pages upon mine and my seven neighbors doorsteps. Desiring none of the three identical copies on my doorstep I contacted this scourge, this Yellow Pages, to come remove the eighteen pound mess. The voices on the other end were receptive and understanding.

Please help document the lack of public shelters & safety nets

Portland, 30.10.2006 08:39

Some anonymous friends of mine are not able to speak out. There is no longer a public safety net in Portland for women, youth or eldery people who need emergency service. The plan seems to be that if you don't provide service, the problem will go away. There is tons of talk about "true" solutions like housing but there is very little action for those who wind up costing us more in emergency rooms.

Please add to this article with facts, articles and first hand stories.

Commissioner Leonard commented: I filed an emergency ordinance today -that is also co sponsored by Commissioner Sten and Mayor Potter- that will provide the funding needed to immediately open the Women's Emergency Shelter operated by the Salvation Army.

Photos: Mexican Consul goes to Oaxaca Vigil

San Diego, 30.10.2006 07:39

Luis Cabrera, Mexican Consul in San Diego came to the vigil. His displeasure with the protestors in defense of the people of Oaxaca was apparent. He kept pacing around, talking on his cell phone and conferring with police. At one point he turned to a protestor who was doing nothing except standing there and said in Spanish: "Can you get the fuck out?" To which the anglo protestor answered in Spanish: "Can you get out of Oaxaca?"

The vigil in front of the Mexican Consulate in San Diego on India Street calls for an IMMEDIATE STOP to Mexico's State repression, violence and assasinations in Oaxaca.

Indymedia journalist shot dead by paramilitary during protest in Oaxaca, Mexico

United Kingdom, 30.10.2006 01:09

'William Bradley Roland, also known as Brad Will, 36, a documentary filmmaker and reporter for Indymedia New York in Mexico, Bolivia and Brazil, died today of a gunshot to the chest when pro-government attackers opened fire on a barricade in the neighborhood of Santa Lucia El Camino, on the outskirts of Oaxaca, Mexico. He died with his video camera in his hands.' (source: Narconews) Read NYC-Indymedia statement and a Call to all independent journalists to support the struggle in Oaxaca.

Call to Protest Outside Mexican Embassy in London, Monday 30th October 5pm

Brad had been in Oaxaca taking video and reporting on the state wide popular uprising and teacher strike that began in June with the violent attempted removal of the striking teachers from their encampment in the centre of Oaxaca City by federal police forces. 3 others were also killed alongside him (making 4 dead in total); 1 member of Radio Universidad was also injured: he was taken to the hospital in a volkswagen van as police would not let any ambulances come.

Since the beginning of the strike in June, teachers and other groups have formed the APPO - the Popular Assembly of the Oaxacan People - and have called for the removal of the governor of state Ulises Ruiz of the PRI. There is a long history of Mexico using government sponsored paramilitaries to repress social movements, including a massacre of hundreds of students in Mexico City in 1968. As reports of protesters surrounded by armed government forces and police continue to pour in, activists in cities around the world are planning protests at Mexican embassies in outcry against the violent aggression against the people of Oaxaca.

Mexican Federal Forces Attacking Demonstrators and Retaking Oaxaca City; Protests at the Mexican Consulate; Electronic Protest

San Diego, 30.10.2006 01:08

On Friday, armed paramilitaries attacked a barricade of The Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), killing NYC Indymedia reporter Brad Will and injuring photographer Oswaldo Ramírez of the daily Milenio. Video footage from Will's camera was used to identify the attackers, Abel Santiago Zárate and Juan Carlos Soriano Velasco from the local police and PRI politicians Manuel Aguilar and Pedro Carmona (Will's assassin). In a separate incident later in the day, Oaxacan schoolteacher Emilio Alfonso Fabián and resident Esteban López Zurita were killed. In paramilitary attacks on friday, a total of four people were murdered, thirty wounded and several abducted.

Vincente Fox, President of Mexico, has used the paramilitary attacks organized by his PRI partners as a pretext for sending the Federal Preventative Police (PFP) to Oaxaca to suppress the five month APPO resistance movement, which has occupied sections of the central city and government buildings, demanding the resignation of the corrupt PRI governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, the release of political prisoners and the end of repression in Oaxaca.

Radio APPO (english translation) and Narco News are reporting that the PFP has advanced through Oaxaca City into the city center, removing barricades and reoccupying government buildings, including city hall. APPO has requested nonviolent resistance only. Violent attacks on government forces by provocateurs have been reported.

Aufstand in Oaxaca: Regierung setzt Militär in Bewegung

Austria, 29.10.2006 21:07
