November 7th Elections

San Francisco Bay Area, 05.11.2006 21:09

On November 7th, voters around the US will go to the polls. While most of the national focus is on the chance that Democrats will take at least one branch of Congress from the Republicans, the "GOP" and conservative issues appear to be making some gains, especially in California.

The two major San Francisco newspapers have openly endorsed Arnold Schwarzenegger and it appears that some Democratic Party leaders have been rallying support for the Republican governor. Proposition 85, which would require parental notification before a teen can have an abortion, appears to be in the lead. In Bay Area races, the business community and both major newspapers are working to get progressive supervisor Chris Daly out of office and in Berkeley progressive City Council member Kriss Worthington is on the receiving end of the most expensive campaign in the city's history.

Talk by WTO Director Disrupted: Activists and Audience Members Forcibly Dragged Out

Boston, 05.11.2006 19:08

On Wednesday, November 1, the JFK Forum at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government hosted Pascal Lamy, Director General of the World Trade Organization. The subject of the lecture was posed as a question: "Is the WTO Accountable?" Shortly after the address began, three Boston activists took turns standing up and loudly disrupting the event. Each wore a bright red headband inscribed with the words, “NO WTO.” They read, in part, statements charging the WTO with putting profits before people and destroying the lives, ecosystems, and communities of people around the world. All three were quickly and forcibly dragged from the building, while still delivering their indictments, by Harvard security and Cambridge police.

In Solidarity with the Rebellion in Oaxaca...We must Create a Rebellion of our Own!

San Francisco Bay Area, 05.11.2006 00:09

"The fundamental problem is capitalism..." - Florentino Martinez, Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca, (APPO)

"...Direct action, not party politics or voting, has been the method of change for those writing history in the streets of Oaxaca. Taking over media centers to spread news, destroying and occupying government property, taking to the streets and stopping business as usual. All of this is designed to disable the one thing that the elites care most about: profits.

Struggles across the world have much to learn from the rebels in Oaxaca, who don't wait for change, but go into the streets and create it for themselves. For them, a revolution is not an abstraction, but something that they have a stake in creating."

Trouble on the Airwaves

NYC, 04.11.2006 17:39

The disputed financial status of WBAI is only one of many items about which different sides disagree, but it is perhaps the most important current area of conflict. WBAI has perennially teetered on the edge of financial ruin, with accusations of falling listenership and fiscal mismanagement long having been used as weapons in the various factional battles over the station’s direction. The plain, hard numbers, however – obtained from several anonymous LSB members and from public documents – paint a depressing picture. [Read More]

Standing In The Rain

Portland, 04.11.2006 07:39

I KEPT MY PROMISE

Looking out my window, the rain was already coming down, it looked and was cold. I had to decide if I was going to go to my weekly protest outside the World Trade Center, called by me, "The Den of the Centaur." The time was 10:00 AM, the 15 bus was coming in fifteen minutes, should I go or just say, "Too wet--too cold."

I put on my heaviest coat, gloves and took two hats; grabbed my sign and off to the bus stop on Stark. I could hear my dog Lucky laughing as I went out the door in the rain, but I wanted to keep my promise of showing up each Thursday to take on Gorgon Smith. I wanted to tell people who would listen that he is a NeoCon of the worst sort. A closet Neo Conservative, who comes out when Cheney and Bush need his vote. This week was important because I was going after his voting record concerning the military and veterans affairs.

Federal judge in Oregon criticizes government attorneys in wiretapping case

Portland, 04.11.2006 07:39

In a hearing on Wednesday before federal district judge Garr King, attorneys representing plaintiffs Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation, Inc., and two of its attorneys in a suit challenging President Bush's warrantless surveillance program refuted the government's allegations that plaintiffs' attorneys had mishandled classified information. The litigation arises from the government's accidental disclosure to plaintiffs of classified evidence that plaintiffs were victims of the warrantless surveillance program.

The hearing in Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation, Inc. et al. v. Bush et al. was precipitated by plaintiffs' filing of documents under seal in support of their motion for partial summary judgment. The government accused plaintiffs' attorneys of violating security procedures in preparing and filing the documents and demanded a hearing. At the hearing, Judge King squarely rejected the government's accusations, finding plaintiffs' attorneys had "not violated any rule, order or law" or engaged in "improper conduct or bad faith."

Oaxaca Repels PFP Attack on University, Oaxaca Solidarity Camp Continues at the SD Mexican Consulate

San Diego, 04.11.2006 07:08

On Thursday the Oaxacan people, using rocks, custom-made fireworks launchers and limitless courage, repelled a fierce attack by the Mexican Federal Preventative Forces (PFP) employing chemical weapons on University City, which houses the University Autotonima Benito Juarez and the voice of the struggle, Radio Universidad. The University has become the central location for The Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO) since the PFP occupied the zocalo on Sunday. Read more here: 1 2 3

On Friday, about 20 people got out of minivans and shot at Radio Universidad.

In San Diego, protesters with the Oaxaca Solidarity Camp continue to occupy the sidewalk in front of the Mexican Consulate in Little Italy, despite being hassled by SDPD and consulate personnel. On Wednesday, an energetic display of chanting, yelling and percussion rocked the consulate and Little Italy off their foundations. On Thursday, protesters showed films projected onto the Consulate garage door about the Oaxacan People's struggle, as well as the video Indymedia journalist Brad Will was shooting when he was assassinated in Oaxaca last Friday. As if on cue, the garage door opened and the Consul drove out during Will's video. On Friday, energetic chanting accompanied the presence of fox news. A surprisingly high fraction of the people passing by the consulate had some awareness of the situation in Oaxaca. The protesters request your continuing support and help maintaining the Camp.

Foreigners, journalists threatened in Oaxaca

Santa Cruz, CA, 04.11.2006 06:38

November 3rd, 2006 - danielsan and ariel write: The climate for journalists has worsened in the days since the Federal Police occupied Oaxaca City. Today we talked to Juan Carlos Gomez, who until recently worked with a local radio station. He says he had recieved repeated threats on his life, and today was beaten by several men whom he believes are the same men who were shooting at Barricade 3 last friday, and that they were some of the same men who shot and killed Brad Will. In the interview below he describes the attack, saying 'They hit me in the stomach and the mouth... I fell back on the ground and felt a kick to my neck. I ran to the Cinco Señores [an intersection near the University] where I passed out. Some people picked me up and took me to the clinic [behind the barricades protecting Radio Universidad].'

With the PFP in town, local PRIistas are threatening members of APPO, teachers, and visible members of the Oaxacan resistance, including members of the organization CIPO-RFM (Consejo Indigena Popular de Oaxaca - Ricardo Flores Magón), as well as foreigners in general and foreign journalists especially. Indymedia has an especially high profile due to Brad's affiliation with NYC indymedia. We've heard rumors that indymedia is on the minds and lips of PRIistas and government loyalists high up the chain of command, who have claimed that indymedia correspondents take orders from APPO, and that foreigners are stirring up trouble and encouraging the continuing resistance. Akha Woman Jailed in Singapore for One Year

Portland, 04.11.2006 05:39

An Akha woman who was a victim of trafficking, entered Singapore and was arrested because there was a ban against her. She was sentenced to one year in Changi prison for illegally re-entering the country.

Ms. Meitinee Wongsa (Changi Prisoner number S12369) is an Akha woman who was trafficked from Chiangrai Thailand to the south of the country when she was 18. She was unable to read or write and could barely speak Thai. She was delivered to a brothel in Hatyai. The owner of the brothel made a fake passport for her and took her to Singapore where she was going to put her in a brothel where she would have to sleep with 30-40 men a day. But the police refused her a "permit" and sent her back to Hatyai. (In Singapore the police allow these visitors, for this use, but it is not completely official and not completely illegal.

The Swap Box Project- a how-to

Portland, 04.11.2006 05:39

What is the Swap Box Project? Why do the streets need communal space, and what can you do to take back your right to define the public sphere.

Well, I've written about why the Swap Box Project exists several times, so I figured I want to follow that up with step-by-step instructions on how to build your very own Swap Box. After all, the Swap Box project needs to go beyond Ottawa. Here's how you do it:
