Drive Away Hunger

Portland, 15.11.2006 10:39

Drive Away Hunger is located at 93rd and NE Halsey. The program accepts vehicle donations from the community and then uses the proceeds from the sale to help Portland's homeless population. Donated cars, depending on condition are either crushed, sold for parts or sold at retail to the general public off our lot.

Donors get rid of their old stuff, efficient recycling and a tax deduction. It is very easy to donate a vehicle. Just give us a call at 503-906-7688 to donate a used vehicle and we'll arrange to have it towed away if you can't drive it in.

Massacre in Chiapas

Portland, 15.11.2006 10:39

Today, Monday, November 13, presumed paramilitaries committed a massacre in the Montes Azules jungle region of Chiapas, killing nine indigenous women and men and two children.

The details of the massacre, in a very isolated area, far from urban and media centers, are still sketchy, but the warning signs that violence on this scale was brewing in the region have been known by state and federal officials all along. They were specifically warned by human rights organizations last July and August, but in lieu of taking positive action, their police and other agencies merely aggravated the problems since then.

KATU (Li2U) News Hypocritically "reporting" on LA Police Violence

Portland, 15.11.2006 10:39

Suddenly, there seems to be some interest in the issue of rampant and widespread police violence. KATU just ran a story showing video of a homeless man being shot in the face with pepper spray as he was handcuffed and sitting in the pig mobile, saying he could not breathe. This, only days after the scandalous video posted to YouTube. And KATU cares? Then where have they BEEN? Pig apologists finally seeing the light? Or just clueless, lame, dumbfucks parroting the latest story off the wire. You be the judge.

If KATU wants to see dramatic footage of police abuse of power, they can check out Videos from the Resistance. Hell, they can even check out their own outtakes. You know, the "news" that was considered too "inflammatory" to air. Yes, they could even show the footage they cut out of the A22 press release video, before airing their absurdly transparent "report" a few years back. (Anyone wanna see what they cut? Go to the video page and download Li2U News. Or, for more of KATU's lyin' dog ways, check out "Fuck the Corporate Media.")

James Jahar Perez Murder Revisited

Portland, 15.11.2006 10:39

Yesterday, the 9th US Court of Appeals was presented with the details of this case, by Attorney Eldon Rosenthal, who argued that the Portland Police did not have probable cause to shoot, and that the policy within the department was lax, because the policy then in effect (and probably still in effect) did not require that level of protection (probable cause).

Most of us who read this site are aware of the details of this 2004 murder, but for those who are not, a quick recap: Perez, as the name indicates, was of the brown complexion, and driving a car that was "too nice for the neighborhood," and pulled over for "failing to signal for a turn." Moments later, he was shot and killed by Officer Jason Sery. Once the victim was dead, Sery's partner in the crime, Sean Macomber, sealed the deal with his taser for some undiscernable reason. Many more details are available here on Indymedia, beginning with http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2004/03/284461.shtml

Did I mention that James, like most of the targets of Portland Cops in the last few years, was unarmed?

Tennessee, 14.11.2006 23:09

On Monday, November 13th the Department of Energy hosted a public forum attended by members of the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance as well as concerned community members about the possibility of constructing new nuclear bomb factories at the Oak Ridge Complex. The hearing was part of a series of hearings being held in Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada and California. The Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance has released a statement claiming that there is no necessity to build another nuclear bomb factory at the Oak Ridge Complex and that instead the United States should be dismantling its nuclear weapons infrastructure.

Oaxaca Prepares for A Week of APPO Marches

San Francisco Bay Area, 14.11.2006 21:39

The Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca had a weekend-long Congress from November 10th-12th, and marches were planned for every day this week. The support at the barricade in front of Radio Universidad has been thinning out and two fast food restaurants near the university were firebombed over the weekend. A Student and Youth Conference also vowed to protect the University. In Oaxaca City, graffiti that is covered up goes back up daily. Bristol, 14.11.2006 20:38

A Week in Palestine for the Olive Harvest A Week in Palestine for the Olive Harvest In the second report by Bristolian Ed Hill of BristolComputers4Palestine at the Zaytoun Olive harvest tour of Palestine. Ed writes; I have been telling the media in the UK about the town being "strangled by a ring of steel". But when I arrived and saw the gates and the miles of fencing it was a shock to see it with my own eyes. The "Separation Barrier Wall/Fence" stretches along the hillside so-say protecting the settlement of Ariel. This will eventually become the de-facto new border with Israel, even though it is more then ten miles inside the west Bank...It is such an injustice that this innocent town of farmers, who just want to get on quietly with their own lives, are being treated in this way....In addition to this, we spoke to people who have been victims of army raids into the town. These raids have been happening almost every night over the last week, usually between midnight and four in the morning. Solidarity in Chiapas for Oaxaca

Boston, 14.11.2006 17:08

In a courageous and moving act of solidarity with the people of Oaxaca, a delegation of approximately 300 from Chiapas marched into the zocalo of Oaxaca City today, currently occupied by the PFP, the federal police force. They also visited the planton of Santo Domingo, occupied by the popular assembly movement, to deliver food and medicine aid (gathered in communities with scarce resources), as well as make a stop in their procession at the first Constituent Congress of the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), to bring their message of solidarity and the need for organized and inclusive unity.

AETA: Congress Strikes a New Blow to Freedom of Speech

Boston, 14.11.2006 16:08

On its first day back in session, the House of Representatives yesterday voted in support of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA). The AETA is a law that could be used criminalize some of the most important forms of nonviolent animal protection advocacy: civil disobedience, whistle-blowing, and undercover investigations. Over 160 groups registered their opposition to the new law, among them are The Humane Society of the United States, the American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), New York City Bar Association, and The National Lawyer's Guild. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also issued a statement strongly urging opposition to the bill, but later issued another statement pledging they would not oppose the legislation but urged congress to change much of the language of the bill.

The Anti-War Movement Sourced the Democrats’ Victory!

Baltimore, 14.11.2006 15:08

The Democratic Party, read “The War Lite” Party, is basking in the glow of victory today. It has regained control of the House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate for the first time in 12-years. The two issues that it won on-The Iraqi War and the whacky persona of President George W. Bush-had little or nothing to do with the Democratic Party. Those two matters were actually sourced by activists in the Anti-Iraqi War Movement!

Criminal complaint against Rumsfeld for war crimes

Portland, 14.11.2006 11:39

On November 14, 2006, CCR will file a criminal complaint against former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in German Court. The complaint requests the German Federal Prosecutor open an investigation and, ultimately, a criminal prosecution that will look into the responsibility of high-ranking U.S. officials for authorizing war crimes in the context of the so-called "War on Terror." Former White House Counsel (and current Attorney General) Alberto Gonzalez, former Director of Central Intelligence George Tenet, and other high-ranking U.S. officials are also charged in the complaint. The complaint is brought on behalf of 12 torture victims - 11 Iraqi citizens who were held at Abu Ghraib prison and one Guantánamo detainee - and is being filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), the Republican Attorneys' Association (RAV) and others, all represented by Berlin Attorney Wolfgang Kaleck. The complaint is related to a 2004 complaint that was dismissed, but the new complaint is filed with substantial new evidence, new defendants and plaintiffs, a new German Federal Prosecutor and, most important, under new circumstances that include the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense and the passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006 in the U.S. granting officials retroactive immunity from prosecution for war crimes.

Time to end Veteran's Day

Portland, 14.11.2006 11:39

As a veteran myself, I approach this topic with mixed emotions. As a person who has been living in this country through five major wars, and untold skirmishes in foreign lands, and observing the return of the fallen ones, the mangled ones, the forever damaged ones, my first instinct is to offer to them all of the comfort and respect that this country can muster. Of course, the politicians who pound the podium to remember our vets are the first ones to forget their debt to these people who's lives they have squandered and ruined.

All jingoism just serves to perpetuate the crime that is perpetrated upon our youth in every generation since the birth of this nation: War to serve the needs of the corporations that rape the planet, and direct our politicians. I am sick of it, and it must stop somewhere, somehow.

Rare Document / Indians

Portland, 14.11.2006 11:38

For a limited period of time this document will be available on the server at the URL indicated. The document is a "recovered" version of a document describing survey work conducted by the U. S. Army in an effort to get a summation on flora, fauna, and minerals in the South West in the year 1869.

Of particular interest is the commentary on the Native American Indians sprinkled within the document. The invasion of Europeans into the North American Continent is well described but utterly unmentioned by name in the Engineering Report; that is, the document is a window into the mindset of the Europeans in the aftermath of the abject slaughter of the Indians however the invasion and slaughter itself is never mentioned or described anywhere within the document.

Despite U.S. Threats, Voters Return Sandinistas To Power

Portland, 14.11.2006 11:38

The Sandinista revolution, upon coming to power in 1979, confiscated the land that had been held by the Somoza family and some of his closet cronies and redistributed it to the poor that worked it partly through establishing collectively run state farms. The Sandinistas also made literacy and healthcare a priority. Easily treated diseases that Somoza let kill and maim, such as polio, were vaccinated against and eliminated. Teaching everyone to read and write became a priority in the country where Somoza once declared he wanted "... uneducated people, little more than beasts of burden."

Schumacher Furs protest report, November 11

Portland, 14.11.2006 11:38

Over one year since we began, and the Schumacher Furs demos are still going strong. We've stood together through pouring rain, storms, sweltering heat, crazy proprietors, abusive patrons, and inquisitive newsmedia.

Last week we were deluged with rain, our feet were soaking wet, the umbrellas and tarps came out, but that didn't dampen our protest or our commitment to the animals who live miserable lives on fur farms, or who are trapped painfully in the wild. The radical cheerleaders performed some spirited cheers, we chanted, leafleted, showed educational videos at the Free Speech wagon, ate vegan snacks, and danced in the rain. And at the end of the day, when the metal gate came down in front of Schumacher, we cheered as we do at the close of every Saturday, in celebration of another day spent standing up for the voiceless. It's clear that the party is outside, while inside is a macabre funeral parlor of dead body parts.
