Iraq War Resister Kyle Snyder Speaks in San Diego

San Diego, 09.12.2006 23:08

At 19, Kyle Snyder joined the Army for the usual reasons a 19-year-old would: a $5,000 signing bonus and promises of health coverage and college aid. Four years later, he's touring the country in a bus run by the Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) and speaking largely to student audiences — many of them students of color — in schools heavily recruited by the military. He's also fulfilling the opportunity the military promised him and then reneged — the chance to reconstruct infrastructure for a devastated population — not in Iraq, but in New Orleans, where IVAW members have an ongoing cleanup project to rehabilitate homes flooded in Hurricane Katrina.

“There’s not a day that goes by without me thinking about the 500,000 Iraqis and 3,000 Americans who have died. I support the troops but oppose the war. I want my friends home so I don’t have to question anymore. I don’t believe in the Bush administration. One minute I’m looked at as a hero, and the next as a traitor. It’s difficult for me to understand that kind of logic.”

The Purloined Minutes

Bristol, 09.12.2006 12:37

"Is Bristol City Council breaking the law in order to conceal the truth about their regeneration plans for South Bristol? Bristol City Council's C21 Steering Committee is the secretive group of leading businessmen, politicians and civil servants trying to quietly develop their corporate masterplan for the regeneration of South Bristol." Bristol Bloggercontinues: This masterplan, as already reported: Bristol For Sale, is likely to propose that "low quality green space" on South Bristol's estates is cheaply sold to private developers to build tens of thousands of units of high density housing. The committee, which is attended by leading executives from Bristol International Airport amongst others, is also likely to back the plan to carve up Hartcliffe, Whitchurch and Stockwood with a new South Bristol Ring Road and support the expansion of Bristol Airport. (Image Right: Planned site for the South Bristol Ring Road.)However, finding out what this committee is currentlly doing and thinking is proving to be extremely difficult. As a committee administrated and controlled by Bristol City Council, any C21 Steering Committee meetings should fall within the scope of the Local Government Act. This means that their meetings must be public, the minutes must be published and that any reports presented to the committee meeting must be made available to the public too ... This is not the case, however, with the C21 Steering Committee. Until earlier this week, the most recent set of minutes available on the C21 website were from February ... Eventually the Bristol Blogger received back just one set of minutes from April ... What are we meant to think when the council has "to strive" to find major reports on the future of the city in their filing? Is it wise to entrust the future of the city to people that can't even do the filing? (Image Left: Will the Council abide by its own Sustainable Development Guide?) Holding anti-FTA banners and chanting slogans, the protesters gathered as a fifth round of talks continued at the Big Sky Resort in the US state of Montana to discuss removing tariffs and other trade barriers.

Rep. Cynthia McKinney Files Articles Of Impreachment

Portland, 09.12.2006 09:38

With a heavy heart and in the deepest spirit of patriotism, I exercise my duty and responsibility to speak truthfully about what is before us. To shy away from this responsibility would be easier. But I have not been one to travel the easy road. I believe in this country, and in the power of our democracy. I feel the steely conviction of one who will not let the country I love descend into shame; for the fabric of our democracy is at stake.

Mr. Speaker: Under the standards set by the United States Constitution, President Bush?along with Vice President Cheney, and Secretary of State Rice?should be subject to the process of impeachment, and I have filed H. Res. _ in the House of Representatives.

Portland, 09.12.2006 09:38

Civil Rights Outreach Committee, 12/7/06 One year ago, a nationwide sweep of arrests revealed the FBI's "Operation Backfire," a vast investigation and persecution of environmental and animal advocacy. The FBI, Cell Phones and You

San Diego, 08.12.2006 19:38

I am not a paranoid conspiracy theorist. I do not believe the twin towers fell because Dick Cheney planted explosives in them. I do not think the Kennedys were assassinated by space aliens. But I have one request: before you read another word of this story out loud to yourself or your friends, TAKE THE F*N BATTERY OUT OF YOUR CELL PHONE!

Let me explain. We all know that the NSA is monitoring our phone conversations and reading our e-mails, without warrants or oversight or any of that messy red tape, because, any one of us, especially if we have a tendency to question the corporate security state, could at any time turn into a TERRORIST. We also know that the FBI as well as local security forces have been infiltrating groups who advocate for peace, animals and the Earth, because, well, you know. These actions combined with the recently revealed Automated Targeting System and numerous other programs have led most people to self-regulate their speech and actions, to avoid the possibility of being branded an eco-terrorist (green scare), a potential presidential assassin or an Islamic terrorist.

But to the clever geeks at the FBI, this climate of fear and paranoia simply isn't enough. And so they, in partnership with their corporate collaborators, have devised a way to listen to our conversations using our cell phones. But, you say, the NSA is already doing that! No, the FBI is listening to you even when you aren't talking to someone using your cell phone. What? As revealed in a judge's ruling related to investigation of the feds' competitors, the Mafia, the FBI's eggheads have figured out how to reprogram your phone, without ever having access to it, so that they can activate the microphone and listen by calling your phone from anywhere without you having a clue. OK, you say, I will just turn off my phone. Nope. Many models of phones (thank you Verizon!) can be turned on remotely, again, without a trace.

And so all of us who have cell phones are wired directly to the den of thieves. Even amongst trusted friends, we have to "watch what we say, watch what we do." The only ways to defeat this intrusion are to take the battery out of your cell phone, leave it at home, or responsibly recycle it.

Welcome to homeland insecurity. How can we help you?

Stop Union Busting on the SF Waterfront!

Portland, 08.12.2006 08:38

For the past two months Bay Area maritime union members have been picketing daily in a struggle to maintain union wages and working conditions. Terry MacRae's Alcatraz Cruises (a subsidiary of Hornblower) refuses to hire IBU and MM&P members who have worked on the Alcatraz ferry since 1973. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union was born out of the 1934 San Francisco Maritime and General Strike. Since then, the ILWU has maintained good wages and working conditions on the entire Bay Area waterfront. The current assault by Hornblower is a direct attack at the heart of ILWU jurisdiction and demands a powerful response!

ILWU Local 10 voted to hold a port-wide stop-work meeting and port shutdown in solidarity with the IBU & MMP workers. This is call for all union members and their allies to join us for the march at 9:15 AM and on the picket line at 10 AM on December 9.

EPA Closes Libraries, Destroys Documents

Portland, 08.12.2006 08:38

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has begun closing its nationwide network of scientific libraries, effectively preventing EPA scientists and the public from accessing vast amounts of data and information on issues from toxicology to pollution. Several libraries have already been dismantled, with their contents either destroyed or shipped to repositories where they are uncataloged and inaccessible.

Members of Congress have asked the EPA to cease and desist. Please call EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson at (202) 564-4700 and tell him that scientists and the public should retain access to this information. Urge him to immediately halt the dismantling of the library system until Congress approves the EPA budget and all materials are readily available online.

FCC Writing New Rules on Video Franchising

Portland, 08.12.2006 08:38

What FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is proposing to do here is beyond the purview of the FCC, but he doesn't seem to care. The telecommunications corporations figure if they can get their servant Mr. Martin to initiate the rules changes they fought for but failed to acquire through the legislative process by FCC fiat, then they can let the challenges to this drag out in court for at least a couple of years, by which time all the damage will have been done and they will have effectively received what they wanted in the first place.

It is vital that they hear from people. Industry is attempting to go around Congress by having the FCC change the rules. Closing Date For Comments is WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13th, close of business.

Helping Low-income Students Realize their Potential Beyond High School

NYC, 08.12.2006 07:39

In our ongoing effort to bring poor and low-income students to college, WRI's High School Coordinator and other Hunter students, and alums made presentations on access to higher education to several classes of high school students at The High School of Violin and Dance (HSVD) in the Bronx, NY. Principal Lippold responded to WRI’s outreach and invited us to come uptown.

As the school website declares, “Our mission is to prepare a diverse group of students to be intelligent, caring leaders in society. At HSVD, parents, students, and staff work together to provide opportunities that meet the needs of every learner. We offer a college preparatory program that values higher-level thinking and artistic expression.”

HSVD's history is encouraging. HSVD opened in the Bronx in September 2002 as one of 12 new smaller high schools, all part of the restructuring plan for the Morris HS building as the phase out of the old Morris was concluded. Before restructuring, Morris High School was considered a failing school.

In September 2003 the Gates Foundation joined the New York City Department of Education in supporting 67 small high schools citywide. “By transforming large failing schools like Morris High School into small learning communities and creating new high schools that offer personalized learning and rigorous coursework, this ambitious effort will provide students the high-quality education they need to succeed in the 21st century. The city is leveraging the foundation's investment to open a total of 200 new small schools throughout the five boroughs, including 60 in the fall of 2004.”

HSVD is housed in a renovated building with good space for teaching and learning. The students we met were engaged and eager to go to college. So then why is WRI needed there?

Ana Cuaz summed it up nicely yesterday, “Placing students in pretty buildings, although conducive to their learning experience in the classroom, does not substitute the encouragement and support that is crucial to helping them realize their potential beyond high school.” Involved and dedicated staff and teachers surround HSVD students but not all high schools are equipped that way. Applying for college, understanding the college environment and succeeding in academia can be baffling to those of us who are left alone as a 12th grader.

Ana reflected on her experiences with students yesterday, “When I attended the HS for Telecommunication Arts and Technology in Brooklyn, we took classes in a trailer park across the street while classrooms were being renovated. The renovations were important of course in creating an environment for students that was safe, clean, and comfortable, but the resources available for students was lacking. I wasn't told about opportunities to go to college. I wasn't even encouraged to apply. In fact, my counselor told me, I would never get accepted to Hunter College. There needs to be a balance, and an equal emphasis placed on all of the different factors students experience in HS because no matter how unimportant each may seem, they all contribute to the experience as a whole. Too much emphasis placed on any one factor will surely result in the failure of another.”

New York Gridlock

NYC, 08.12.2006 07:38

After last week's news about congestion pricing, I'm all fired up about Growth or Gridlock, an extensive report about New York's coming traffic disaster (and by extensive, I mean terrifying). The report has been making a lot of waves in metro sections this week, probably because it's not geared to lefty tree-huggers or health-conscious types, but to business people. (The report is by the Partnership of New York City, a nonprofit organization comprised of a select group of two hundred CEOs from New York City’s top corporate, investment and entrepreneurial firms.) The findings: traffic congestion in the city leads to...

Oppose the criminalization of dissent! Green Scare Solidarity in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, CA, 08.12.2006 01:08

Despite the now mainstream awareness of the disaster status of global warming, the Federal government is right now aggressively pursuing the radical environmental community in Federal Grand Juries, essentially a revival of the McCarthy hearings. In the Grand Jury, even people not accused of committing any crime, simply of holding 'relevant information' ie. who do you know, what is your political affiliation, are stripped of their fifth amendment rights and can be jailed for years for simply refusing to speak or give information. The Grand Juries are unconstitutional and pose an extreme attack on Free Speech and space for dissent.

The Grand Jury is authorized only to obtain whether there is enough evidence for a trail to commence. However, they are carried on in secret without any admittance by the Federal Government. Therefore, the public is only made aware of their methods and very existence by those who are subpoenaed and put the word out.

Cooper Urges Nashvillians to Participate in FCC Media Ownership Hearing

Tennessee, 07.12.2006 23:09

NASHVILLE---U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper is urging Nashvillians and all Middle Tennessee residents to take part in the upcoming FCC public hearing on media ownership that has been announced for December 11th. Nashville will be only the second city to host one of the six hearings that will be held nationwide to consider issues of media ownership and media consolidation. "Now is our chance to stand up and tell the federal government what to do," Cooper said. "As a host city for one of these important hearings, Nashville can help protect Americans' First Amendment rights. I urge everyone to think about the news and entertainment media we consume each day and how that industry can best serve the American public. I hope everyone will participate in this important conversation, either by going to the FCC's website or by attending the hearing on December 11th."

Corteo neofascista: per sicurezza annullata la polentata

Switzerland, 07.12.2006 22:07
