Sea Shepherd Prepares to Defend Whale Sanctuary

"Son las cosas de Miguel"

Canarias, 12.12.2006 00:10

Bristolian Goes on the Attack on TV

Bristol, 11.12.2006 21:37

Ian Bone vs. Neo-Labour & Tory Ministers summary Image: The Bristolian, Paul Foot Award 2005 Special Edition PDF. Anarchist606 writes: Bristolian Goes on the Attack on TV; "It is completely and utterly weasel words...you're not thinking about saying sorry for the 650,000 dead, you're just thinking about justifying your position which was based on lies..." I was flicking through the TV on Saturday night when I settled on More4 to watch historian David Starky's current affairs discussion show 'Starkey's Last Word' (you can see the show by clicking here and clicking on the link '6 Dec: The Iraq Study Group') and to my surprise and anticipation he announced his line up of guests as Harriet Harman (Neo-Labour, Minister for Constitutional Affairs) Ed Vaizey (Tory shadow arts minister) and Ian Bone, anarchist! Bone is the co-founder of Class War, editor of the Bristolian, Vote Nobody organiser and now author of the excellent 'Bash the Rich'. The show was great fun. I bet they put Bone on it anticipating some sparks – and he did not disappoint. They sat him between Harman and Vaisey and their body language suggested that they were a bit uncomfortable with a commoner in their midst. After giving the other two a chance to give their point of view on the debarkle of Iraq, Starkey turned to Bone for his option and the Bristolain let rip; "I've got a three point solution that would get us out of this [Iraq] much quicker. [Bone counts 1 on his finger] We should get popular opposition to this war back on the streets. [2] We surround No.10 Downing Street on May Day and stay until Mr.Blair goes or ends the war a la Hezbolla, Lebanon. [3] The troops should come home, not wait to be ordered home by George Bush or Tony Blair, but just get on the plane and come home because all they are at the moment is just sitting ducks and aunt Sally's waiting to be shot at and these two... [points to Harman and Vaizey] ..should should be prosecuted for war crimes." Germany, 11.12.2006 20:09

Smashing time at EDO

United Kingdom, 11.12.2006 19:38

A 'MASKED Ball' was held by Smash EDO to celebrate the discontinuance of EDO Rugged Systems, one of the businesses operating out of the controversial weapons firm in Home Farm Road, Brighton.

The campaign group has campaigned for over three years for the closure of EDO MBM, which supplies weapons to the Israeli military for their assault on the Palestinians and for the US/UK led occupation of Iraq.

EDO MBM, a wholly owned unit of the US EDO Corporation, has performed dismally in 2006.

Support Victims of the Green Scare

San Diego, 11.12.2006 19:38

As several dozen young people gathered last Thursday at Voz Alta, downtown, to raise money for other young people imprisoned for their activism, their quiet strength as a movement became illuminated. What is it about this segment of a new generation that strikes so much terror into our corporate owned government?

They understand that the Green Scare is here. It is the weapon of choice by CEO’s and wealthy speculators to bring yet another generation to its knees by insuring that youthful animal rights activists and environmentalists, who commit civil disobedience for ethical or political reasons, get more time in prison than street thugs and rapists. “In defiance of the order that ushers our dying Earth to her grave, let us stand together so that the fires of our hearts may burn against this dark hour of repression,” a T-shirt proclaims as the young man talks about the need to support ecoprisoners.

But where is the left? The tragedy is that this inner courage, this ethical strength, this commitment to fundamental change not tinkering, this Earth first mentality, on the part of young environmentalists and animal rights activists frightens mainstream, liberal and progressive groups.

Call to Halt Tree Chopping Call to Halt Tree Chopping A posted newsletter notes a possible threat to Wilmott's Whitebeam, a rare plant species not found anywhere else in the world! Roger Yates of Downs Watch writes: As I write, people from the local community around Ashley Road, Bristol are protesting the felling of trees and digging up of shrubs and hedgerow. The plan for the back gardens of Ashley road by Bristol Churches Housing Association, responsible the 'redevelopement' of the area, is to replace the green space with concrete. At a last minute attempt to save the growth, some people are digging up shrubs and oak trees they planted years ago when they resided at 62 Ashley Road to be planted elsewhere. With action like this being so called regenertaion, people are encouraged to get involved with their green spaces, protect, protest and tell Bristol Churches their opinion. Murderous Former Dictator Pinochet Dies, Escaping Reckoning with Victims

San Diego, 11.12.2006 18:09

Augusto Pinochet, former dictator of Chile who presided over a US-backed reign of terror spanning the period 1973-1990, died on Sunday at age 91.

Under his rule, thousands were disappeared and murdered and hundreds of thousands, including briefly the current president Michelle Bachelet, were brutally tortured. Land redistribution programs and nationalization of industries under Salvador Allende, who was overthrown on September 11, 1973 in a coup led by Pinochet, were replaced with elitist theories of free market crazies like Milton Friedman (who died in November) and the "Chicago boys." The wealthy subsequently made out like bandits but ordinary people were devastated.

Using legal maneuverings, faked illnesses and the influence of friends in high places, Pinochet avoided being held responsible for his crimes. At the time of his death, he was under house arrest, charged with the murder of two of Allende's bodyguards. Numerous celebrations, protests and marches were held in Chile after the announcement of the dictator's death.

From CMI Santiago:

Lone Vet Report

Portland, 11.12.2006 07:10

This Thursday was a little different for me; I arrived for my weekly brunch with the Gorgon about 11:30 AM and stayed until about 1:30 PM. Gordon Smith was again a no show, I am getting the feeling he does not want to meet this old veteran--you think?

People who go to lunch during my protest are getting to recognize me and say hello, or just smile---a few laugh at my signs and one woman said, "Ponder, the SOB probably does not know what the word means." I got a few people who honked their horns today, that is unusual for downtown, not sure why, but it is rare. Most people read the sign, said they agreed with me, and kept walking, I am getting a little nervous because people are agreeing with me but continue on their routine. I thought I would be in hostile territory, but it seems like most people are fed up with this pretender in the WH and want change. I just hope the dems get off their asses and do something significant soon.

Jeff Hogg & the Liberation of Dissent

Portland, 11.12.2006 07:10

The IWW union hall in North Portland was filled to capacity at the Liberating Dissent Anti-Green Scare event last night as Grand Jury resister Jeff Hogg shared his six month ordeal as a Green Scare political prisoner. [Audio]

Until his release from the Josephine County Jail on November 11 of this year, Jeff found himself caught in the snare of the government war on dissent. His speaking presentation occurred as part of an international call to mark the weekend of December 7 as a display of unity and opposition to government repression. It was on December 7, 2005, that the FBI's "Operation Backfire" began with it's broad sweep of harassment, intimidation and persecution of eco and animal rights activists. The ensuing investigation with Grand Jury subpoenas and arrests has come to be known as the Green Scare.

Targeted because of prior eco-activism and activist associations in the Eugene area including work with the Earth First! Journal, Hogg was served with a subpoena in May of this year to testify before the grand jury in regard to a supposed ELF arson that caused property damage. His experience was one of intimidation from the beginning.

Innocent Man Framed by Burge Cops Sues Cops

From the newswire: "Police coerced teenager Harold Hill into falsely confessing to a murder and rape he did not commit. Recently tested DNA evidence demonstrated his innocence… Yesterday [December 8, 2006] Hill filed suit in federal court against nine current and former Area 3 police officers. Among the defendant officers is Lieut. Kenneth Boudreau, who has compiled a notorious record of false confessions of young and otherwise vulnerable defendants"

"Hill is one of over 100 African American men tortured or physically coerced into giving confessions to police under the supervision of then-Commander Jon Burge, who was fired by the City in February 1993 for torture after a 2-1/2 decade rein of terror at both Area 2 and Area 3 Police Headquarters. In Hill's case, police also deliberately suppressed exculpatory evidence, destroying documents and withholding physical evidence that would have prevented his 1994 conviction." Read more
