OHSU Student Publicizes Ignorance

Portland, 25.01.2007 13:10

The December and January issue of "Oregonizm," a magazine with lots of glossy advertisements but very little content, features a letter entitled, "OHSU Student Lashes Out," attributed to "Mars Hall" (page 26). The letter, if authentic, shows a disturbing degree of ignorance on the part of this OHSU student. Equally disturbing is the student's hatefulness. Would you want an ignorant hate-monger as your health practitioner?

Right off the bat, Mars Hall (alleged OHSU student) asserts that the protestors are not informed about the use of animals in lab testing and refers to them as "idiots." I wonder if Mars Hall also considers Dr. Jane Goodall, the world's most renowned primatologist, an "idiot" for being critical of OHSU's animal abuse? See her webpage at: http://www.janegoodall.org

Would Mars Hall also consider C. Ray Greek, MD, and Niall Shanks, PhD; president and vice-president of Americans For Medical Advancement, "idiots?" For their critique of non-human animal-modeled research see their website at: http://www.curedisease.com

Baird's "Town Hall" meeting in Vancouver

Portland, 25.01.2007 13:10

Baird will be in Vancouber WA this week. I hope folks will join me in asking him some tough questions about the war and impeachment.

Congressman Brian Baird will host two town hall meetings on Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26. The town halls will focus particularly on the Iraq war, the federal budget and deficit. This is also an opportunity for residents to share their thoughts on issues and legislation, and for Congressman Baird can hear ideas on how government can serve constituents better.

Washington County Peace Vigil 1-24-07

Portland, 25.01.2007 13:10

About 60 people assembled tonight to demonstrate against Chimpy's lame SOTU speech. Hat's off to senator Webb for his rebuttal.

Jim Webb of Virginia was selected to give the Democratic response to Bush's SoTU, and boy, did they make the right choice. Webb hit all the right notes, his points impressive and unassailable. Rather than even dignify the fearmongering and drawing of parallels of 9/11 to aggression in the Middle East, Webb just pointed out that the Democrats are representing the will of the people in their desire to see an end to the quagmire and that if Bush didn't want to listen to the people that put him in office, the Democrats would lead him to the will of the people.

No Deportations to Unsafe Iraq

United Kingdom, 25.01.2007 07:39

A number of Iraqi-Kurdish asylum seekers have been detained across the UK this month as the Home Office is planning to deport more 'failed' asylum seekers to unsafe Iraqi Kurdistan. The move follows two previous deportations in September 2006 and November 2005, which sparked a lot of anger and protest [1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6].

The International Federation of Iraqi Refugees and the Coalition to Stop Deportation to Iraq have called for a demonstration on January 24th in front of the Home Office in Westminster, London, to "put pressure on policy makers to stop their plans". There will also be another demo, called by the Campaign to Close Campsfield at the RAF Brize Norton military base in Oxfordshire, from where the 'charter flight' is supposed to leave (date not fixed yet).

The Peoples’ Counter State of the Union Message

DC, 24.01.2007 23:11

George W. Bush, the Liar-in-Chief, did his thing on Tuesday night, Jan. 23, 2007. He delivered another one of his so-called “State of the Union” messages to the Congress, on Capitol Hill. Outside the building, however, by the reflective pool, activists, like: Col. Ann Wright, Medea Benjamin, Jeffrey Milliard and Travis Morales, offered a true representation of the state of our nation. They demanded an end to the Iraqi War and bringing our troops home.

"This wanton destruction of our environment and our basic human rights cannot...continue." "This wanton destruction of our environment and our basic human rights cannot and will not be allowed to continue." Bristol Rising Tide writes: Come and skill share platform building in the trees. If you want to get to the protest against the building of the pipline in Wales, lend a hand, take banners, blankets, orchestra, hot tea, popular education. Here are some dierctions: Off the A40, 4 Miles West of Brecon, Near the church look out for the banner that says 'STOP THE PIPELINE'. A Bristol activist said today that the pipeline is in the second phase of building. Campers have set up by occupying the land and set up a platform in the trees and camping on the ground. Tree cutting has been happening. Full Article. The background to the protest is: Today saw setbacks to the progress of the South Wales LNG Pipeline for the second week running. Work was delayed at three separate sites along the gigantic 115 mile route way, by a growing anti-pipe movement. The pipeline is part of a massive National Grid project to lay a 115-mile pipeline from Milford Haven to Tirely in Gloucestershire. The project has sparked controversy and opposition from the onset....Opponents say their investigations have led them to the conclusion that it's purely profit led and dangerously hasty. By the Health and Safety Executive's own admission there will be a hole in this pipeline during its lifetime. The volatile safety risks, environmental destruction and significant contribution to climate chaos are the price of National Grid being left unchecked to line their pockets. Cause for a significant and ever increasing number of citizens to take action. Schumacher Fur Story: from an ex-employee!

Portland, 24.01.2007 13:40

I worked for schumacher fur for a short time...

Funny story: A woman brought in a (i shit you not) leopard skin coat-which was over 50 years old, so not TECHNICALLY illegal. The fur was simply beautiful, and I told the woman who owned it that it was "Beautiful, but really kind of sad to see," to which she replied "why would you say that?" and I said "because it's from such a beautiful animal that's now dead." (do I know what to say to fur owners or what?)

Portland, 24.01.2007 13:40

On Monday, February 5 join fellow Portlanders as we travel to Ft. Lewis Washington to support First Lieutenant Watada during his military court martial. As the first Army officer to publicly speak out against the war and refuse deployment to Iraq, Lt. Watada faces a maximum six years in prison. Watata supporters are coming from around the country to this historic day of action to support his courageous stand against an illegal war.

American Friends Service Committee, Recruiter Watch PDX and Veterans for Peace Chapter 72 invite you to join us on a chartered bus from Portland to Ft. Lewis to stand with Lt. Watata. Our friends at Code Pink are also organizing a car caravan. Either way, we hope you can make it to stand with Lt. Watata and say no to the war in Iraq.

Black Panther Arrested based on Torture Evidence

Portland, 24.01.2007 13:40

January 23, 2007, New York Authorities in San Francisco today announced the arrests and indictments of former Black Panthers in the 1971 killing of police officer Sgt. John V. Young despite the use of torture to obtain confessions. Attorneys with the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) compared the documented torture by law enforcement of Black Panthers arrested in New Orleans in 1973 to the documented torture the U.S. government has practiced recently at Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo.

CCR Legal Director Bill Goodman said, "The case against these men was built on torture and serves to remind us that the U.S. government, which recently has engaged in such horrific forms of torture and abuse at places like Bagram, Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo, has a history of torture and abuse in this country as well, particularly against African Americans."

Twenty years of protest at Waihopai Spybase

Aotearoa, 24.01.2007 08:11

Anti-war activists descended on Marlborough last weekend (20th/21st January, 2007) to protest against New Zealand’s most significant contribution to America’s wars of terror, including wars currently being waged on Iraq and Afghanistan. The Waihopai spy base, located in the Waihopai Valley near Blenheim, is a foreign spybase that works for, and provides raw intelligence directly to, the United States. The base intercepts and records our international phone calls and email. It is directly involved in US-led imperialist wars and the mass killings that have resulted from those invasions. In the twenty years since Waihopai was first announced, the New Zealand Government has poured around $500 million into the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), the agency that runs Waihopai.

Resisting the Police State: A Free Skool Santa Cruz Workshop

Know your "rights" before you find yourself in hot water. Keep yourself safe from police repression. Take the Know Your Rights Quiz and see how much you know. Detentions, arrest, searches, interrogation, jail, warrants, and police infiltration.

Our system of laws exists to maintain the dominance of those in power, and the police are its armed enforcers. If you doubt this for a minute, look at who are the selective targets of local laws: The homeless, the young, the poor, dissenters. Globally, look at who dies and who gets rich from our wars and other disasters.

For 250 years in this country, the government and their enforcers have consistently fought against people working for liberation: Indigenous resistance, land reformers, slave revolts, abolitionists, labor organizers & workers, free-speech advocates, women and civil rights workers, anti-war and anti-globalization protesters, and recently, animal rights and environmental activists. "Terroristisch" ohne Waffeneinsatz

Germany, 24.01.2007 00:10

Work Starts On M1 Widening As Protests Continue

United Kingdom, 23.01.2007 20:09

The work to widen the M1 has started today near Sheffield. The M1 is due to be widened from Luton along Nottingham and Sheffield to Leeds, costing a total of £3.74 billion. Many people believe the widening will allow traffic to grow and cause more CO2 emissions. Road transport currently accounts for 21% of emissions in the UK and rises every year. The work started today is to widen a 2km stretch to four lanes between junction 31-32 near Sheffield. The contractors, Jacksons Civil Engineering, expect that the work will last for a year. Work on a stretch around Nottingham is due to start this summer.

The No Widening M1 Alliance has been rallying local residents and local groups currently exist in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield. Ever since the campaign launch and the first bannerdrop on motorway bridges around Sheffield it has been busy. Various promotional exhibitions by the Highways Agency have been picketed and distrupted by activists in Long Eaton (reports: 1 | 2 ), Kegworth, Selston and Sheffield (reports: 1 | 2 ) Various public meetings and benefit gigs have been organised and at the end of October a mass bannerdrop from Luton to Sheffield coincided with the publication of the Government's 'Stern Report' on Climate Change.
