Local Environmental Activists Urge City to Reconsider Spraying Local Neighborhoods with Pesticides

Tennessee, 14.09.2004 23:03

No Spray! Nashville activists gathered today at the entrance to Lentz Public Health Center with a message for local health board officials, "Don't Spray My Neighborhood." City officials are planning to begin spraying pesticides in residential neighborhoods beginning Wednesday, September 15th because they say they have found one mosquito that was a carrier of the West Nile Virus. Last year the city spent $70,000 spraying pesticides in local neighborhoods between August and October. City Officials claim it is the most effective way of containing West Nile Virus, which they say is a public health hazard.

School radio lease raises free speech concerns

Michigan, 14.09.2004 21:51

DETROIT — Dissent will be crushed if WRCJ, formerly WDTR, is leased to an outside company, say some volunteers at the station and concerned residents. A broad group of community activists have formed a committee opposing the leasing of the Detroit Public School radio station. The spokesman for the Committee to Save Educational Radio in Detroit, Abayomi Azikiwe, said in July that the station’s call letters were changed to WRCJ, which “means radio classics and jazz.” “Our group of concerned residents are demanding answers to a series of questions about the future of WRCJ,” Azikiwe said. “We are requesting the intervention from DPS, elected officials in Detroit, Lansing and Washington, D.C., as well as the Federal Communications Commission.”

Satterthwaite's Smokescreen: Charge Others With What You Actually Are Up To

Urbana-Champaign, 14.09.2004 19:41

Urbana Mayor Tod Satterthwaite and City Councilmember, Milton Otto, have been slinging charges of "ethics" violations against the mayor's political opponents on the city council. A closer look at these recent bizarre attacks on members of their own party in Urbana reveals that it is a cover up for their own questionable ethics, most notably the back room maneuvering to grant Wal Mart control over Urbana's Comprehensive Plan.

Fuerte oposición en Gipuzkoa a la incineración

Euskal Herria, 14.09.2004 16:27

March for Education, Sept. 15-22 - San Jose to Berkeley to SF

Santa Cruz, CA, 14.09.2004 05:17

Over two dozen Bay Area students and youth will walk from San Jose State University to UC Berkeley to San Francisco State University from Sept. 15-22 to dramatize their concern for the future of education in California. Along the way, they will visit a total of 17 different California State Universities, community colleges, and private colleges, to dialogue with the students, faculty, staff, and community members at those campuses and build a person-by-person understanding of the myriad ways the state’s failed budget priorities are impacting its citizens. Women on Waves naar Portugal

Netherlands, 14.09.2004 00:05

Election Special: News From the Neighborhood

NYC, 13.09.2004 19:53

(from WBAI.org / City Limits): Community newspaper and freelance reporters from around the city offer the inside scoop on the Sept. 14 primary.

State legislative primaries are this Tuesday, and there is both not much and a lot at stake. Not much because turnout is expected to be low and most incumbents are not facing serious challenges. And a lot because New York State currently has, according to the Brennan Center for Justice, the most dysfunctional state legislature in the nation--making every possibility for positive change a precious one. We've turned to community newspaper and freelance reporters for the view from the neighborhoods [Read More]

NYC, 13.09.2004 19:26

Activists rally outside the UN to protest the slavery, rape and genocide in Sudan. With more than 50,000 dead and millions of refugees fleeing their homes many believe the situation in Sudan is the first genocide of the 21st century. Speakers condemned the UN, and Kofi Annan in particular, for their pitiful silence and failure to uphold one of the UN's founding principles of "Never Again."
