Bringing It Back Home, Building the 2007 US Social Forum

NYC, 05.03.2007 23:09

The USSF offers no guarantees. It will be what we make of it. So arrive in Atlanta not only with the intention of being convinced and inspired, but with the desire to convince and inspire others. Certainly, the program promises to be dynamic, yet the forum as a whole will require the self-initiative of a restive and hungry social-movement left -- those ardently seeking to return their hearts "back home" -- to make it truly extraordinary.

Bristol Gets Radical

Bristol, 05.03.2007 22:38

A summary of a few radical events in Bristol over the next few weeks... A summary of a few radical events in Bristol over the next few weeks... "Words mean nothing. Action is the only thing. Doing. That's the only thing." Ernest J. Gaines, NovelistAnother bath of radical opportunities begins in Bristol!Bristol Rising Tide writes; Monday Thursday March 8th sees passionate local campaigner Rachel Evans, from Trebanos, will be giving a talk about the pipe and the campaign so far. Also Bristol Rising Tide activists will be talking about their experiences. Bristol Radical History Group present a series of lectures, debates and events with the aim of uncovering the real story behind the abolition of slavery. As we are sure you are aware, March 2007 sees the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire. There are several ‘official’ events taking place to mark this occasion that will concentrate on the parliamentary phase of the abolition struggle. Less is known about the mass movement of abolitionists and the life and death struggles of the slaves to free themselves. Tony Blair and John Prescott may want to talk about legal reform as being ‘British history’, but we want to talk about the real history of abolition; the slave rebellions, grass-roots activists and mass boycotts that forced the hand of Parliament.Kevin writes: The schedule for the day event at the Bristol Latin American Forum on Saturday March the 10th at the University of Bristol is now packed and ready - feast your eyes on the programme below, including a timetable, and list of workshops and film screenings. The day event is free, but PLEASE remember that places are limited to 100 so if you want to guarantee a place, then get there EARLY. Note also the £6 evening event at The Full Moon on Stokes Croft with top Cuban hip hop artists and Bristol's own 16 piece salsa band!calli of Camp for Climate Action writes; Following on last years inspirational camp, Camp for Climate Action 2007 will be taking place from August 14th to 21st. It will be taking place near a target within the aviation, coal or oil industries. We would like to invite YOU to get involved with the process of organizing the camp. We need people to organize outreach, fundraising, site practicalities workshops and more. No previous experience is required. We will be holding a meeting in Bristol 17-18th march to plan for climate camp 07. Please come along and help us make climate camp 2007 a reality. Saturday 17th march 11am – 6pm and Sunday 18th March 10am-5pm.The Banger Peace Pirates write; The debate on Trident-Replacement will take place on Wednesday 14th March. Bet yah can’t guess the result? Blair is already spending millions of our money on research faculties at AWE Aldermaston. Foundations of new buildings to house a super-computer and a massive new laser facility are already underway. 8. März: notwendiger den je

Switzerland, 05.03.2007 21:37

Civilian Deaths Spark Anti-US Protests In Afghanistan

San Francisco Bay Area, 05.03.2007 16:09

On March 4th, US troops killed 16 Afghan civilians following a car bomb attack on their convoy. Eyewitnesses to the incident described the US troops firing indiscriminately at civilians in their vehicles and on foot in angry retaliation for the attack. Hundreds of Afghans protested at the scene of the killings, blocking the main road between Kabul and the Pakistan border. On March 5th, 9 additional Afghan civilians were killed in a NATO bombing raid in Kapisa province. The nine dead civilians included five women and three children.

The Rising Sun Blues

New Hampshire, 05.03.2007 15:11

A week from now a couple hundred UNH students are going to join thousands of students across the country devoting their spring breaks to help in New Orleans. These students will be dumbfounded, unable to find words to express themselves when they see New Orleans now, 18 months after Hurricane Katrina. They will be angry at themselves and with everyone they know for being so ignorant while believing they were informed. Many students will return home affected, hoping to educate others, to continue to make a difference. But they'll be overwhelmed when they are received here, back home, with apathy and hollow empathy. So that these students might not feel defeated by the overwhelming apathy in others as I have been, I am sharing my story. This is the first of a three part series.

Get Local Initiatives Moving Against Global Warming!

Portland, 05.03.2007 01:39

On February 20th, I sent a letter to the mayors of Salem and Medford, asking them to develop meaningful plans to reduce global warming emissions. Please help make sure these two cities listen to that request, by visiting the Action Dashboard of the Oregon Cities Climate Solutions Network. Many of our largest cities, including Portland, Eugene, Gresham, Corvallis, and Ashland, have already committed to developing plans to reduce carbon emissions. Salem and Medford need to join them. You can help make that happen by signing OCCSN's petitions.

Together, we will show that local governments can make real change, and help to shame the federal government into taking action. Global warming solutions are often amazingly inexpensive, and may actually save the city money. Measures taken to cut back on greenhouse emissions on the local level also contribute to quality of life in other ways, by clearing the air of pollution, reducing traffic congestion, and making public transportation easily available. With little meaningful action on global warming from the federal government, as yet, local governments in the US are at the forefront of the movement to address this worldwide crisis. It's easy to get involved?if nothing else, visit the OCCSN website to sign our petitions to Gresham and Salem. The sooner each one of us takes action, the better. Let's keep Oregon?and the world?a habitable place to live.

Wolf Population under attack

Portland, 05.03.2007 01:39

On February 8, 2007 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published their official proposal to remove gray wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountain (NRM) states from the Federal List of Threatened and Endangered Species. The Service wants to delist wolves in all of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, the eastern one-third of Washington and Oregon, and a small part of north-central Utah.

Coalition Vows to Stop Slaughter of Oregon's Cougars

Portland, 05.03.2007 01:39

A coalition of ranchers, conservationists, and animal welfare groups has vowed to halt the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's plan to kill the state's cougars. Despite public outcry over the ODFW plan, the agency has begun killing the big cats. According to the Associated Press last week, "A state wildlife agent trapped and shot two young cougars in Jackson County, the first of two dozen to be killed in that part of the state in a study of whether reducing populations of the animals improves public safety and reduces the loss of livestock. Nine cougars have already been killed in north-central Oregon as part of the study, state figures show." To make matters worse, opponents of the 1994 ban on hound hunting of cougars have introduced legislation (HB 2971) that would permit the ODFW to deputize sport hunters as agents to kill cougars. The bill would also allow hunters to use hounds to chase down cougars, essentially rolling back the ban overwhelmingly approved by voters.

New Yorkers Come Out in Support of Black Panther 8

NYC, 04.03.2007 22:39

For three hours on Friday night, over 100 activists came out to Manhattan's Community Church of New York in support of eight recently arrested veteran members of the Black Panther Party. Yet the night skipped any mourning or weariness as host Lumumba Bandele of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement quickly pledged both a new wave of activism to free these activists as well as a resurgence in the movement to free all political prisoners: the crowd's prolonged response suggested a willingness to fight.

Liege, 04.03.2007 18:07

Danish Social Centre evicted - riots in Copenhagen

Aotearoa, 04.03.2007 12:09

On 1st March at 7am the police started to attack the 'Ungdomshuset' Youth Center in Copenhagen. [ Timeline ] The self-managed house has functioned as a very important political and social cultural centre since 1982. Indymedia Denmark writes, "Yesterday (1st March) a total of 219 arrests were made. The rioting continued sporadically throughout the night at various places in Copenhagen. The police succeeded in detaining a number of activists citing 'the public perception of justice' (that people who commit crimes should be punished) and fear that the activists might continue rioting as reasons in court."

Over 600 people have been arrested over the last 3 days. Solidarity actions spontaneously broke out in cities across Europe.

Olympia Port Militarization Resistance continues campaign to close Port to Iraq shipments

Portland, 03.03.2007 17:39

Olympia, WA, February 29, 2007 - Over the past week, Olympia Port Militarization Resistance (OlyPMR), a local grassroots organization, has stepped up its efforts to close the Port of Olympia to military shipment bound for Iraq as part of President Bush's escalation of the conflict.

Members of OlyPMR met with Thurston County Sheriff Dan Kimball on Friday, February 23. The goal of the meeting was to open a line of communication between OlyPMR and the sheriff's office in anticipation that the sheriff's office would provide security for military shipments targeted for blockage by OlyPMR. "It was a very positive meeting," said Wes Hamilton a Vietnam Veteran and member of the local chapter of Veterans for Peace. "We support the County's position that the costs for these shipments should not be borne by County taxpayers." According to the National Priorities project, the occupation of Iraq has already cost Thurston County citizens over $300 million.

Strykers in Tacoma! Action at Noon

EXTREMELY URGENT! ACTION TODAY (Sat 3/3) AT PORT OF TACOMA

Military vehicles are coming through the Port of Tacoma en route to Iraq. The military's decision to send convoys in the middle of the night on Friday is an obvious response to the militant resistance they encountered May 2006 at the Port of Olympia, which was met with pepperspray and other methods of assault as well as 22 arrests of civil disobedience activists, and a reaction to the recent organizing in preparation for resistance to the next military shipment.

50+ military vehicles were observed Friday night, including 22+ Stryker vehicles, in addition to the other hummers, trucks, soldiers, and vehicles with missiles. Up to 300 vehicles may be expected in total this weekend. The war machine is in our backyard. Be present and take action now. We anticipate activists from throughout the Northwest.

Ungdomshuset ontruimd, Kopenhagen in opstand

Netherlands, 03.03.2007 16:08

UNH Housing Dir. Conk Lies to Forest Park Tenants

New Hampshire, 03.03.2007 14:10

Forest Park is a residential community at the University of New Hampshire which provides family housing. The tenants are mostly graduate students, with some undergraduates, including many international students. They are as diverse a community as you find at UNH and contribute much to both the academic and cultural missions of the University. Despite this fact, Forest Park residents are facing buildings with inadequate maintenance, construction vehicles driving up and down adjacent roads, and rent increases which many cannot afford. For this population at risk, these rent increases mean the difference between being able to stay in school or withdrawing, between having adequate food to feed their children and malnutrition. The tenants fight a battle every year with the Department of Housing over rent increases and the budget.
