Public Hearing: Blackwater Training Facility in San Diego?

San Diego, 01.04.2007 17:08

Blackwater, a multi-million dollar mercenary company owned exclusively by a right-wing Christian billionaire, is trying to develop an 824-acre military training facility in the rural community of Potrero in southeast San Diego. All of the land is either within the Cleveland National Forest or an Agricultural Preserve.

The citizens of Potrero are trying to stop its construction but are having a hard time stopping the political power of Blackwater.

Connie: Just what we do not need is the crazy making of war here in Southern California. Why is it that money talks so loud, there is no benefit to the citizens of the area, it is not bringing new revenue or jobs to the area. The land is better used as farm land, we need food not weapons. The Potrero Planning Committee have been seduced into believing this is in their best interest. I am wondering how many of them were enticed with favors and money? The military already have a training facility in that area, they take up a huge portion of the land with their military training. The sound carries for miles, the chopper activity, etc is heard everywhere. --Read More--

600 people march to save Meadowbank Stadium from sell-off

Scotland, 01.04.2007 11:10

The 'Save Meadowbank' march protested against the proposed closure of the historic stadium to allow development of some of the land for new luxury flats. br The Save Meadowbank campaign states: "The Council admits that most of the funding could, like the ERI at Little France, 'include Public Private Partnership deals with private developers'. And as the NHS experience shows, these private PPP (or PFI) deals often cost the public around 5 times what they should."

Nottingham folk succesfully blockade nuclear submarine base in Scotland

United Kingdom, 01.04.2007 11:09

Over 50 people from Nottingham and Derby have successfully blockaded the Faslane Nuclear Navel Base today. Various blockade groups in intriguing lock-on devices and some plastered together blocked the main entrance to the site. Police started removing people from 8.30 onwards but had problems with removing people from the 6 way lock-on device, which held strong for another 2 hours. The police had to draft in specialist equipment from other forces to deal with the device. 14 people were detained. The blockade lasted for over 4 hours. Whilst on the phone to someone at the scene, one could hear a lot of chanting and cheering as one protester managed to shout 'no to nuclear weapons' just before being put in a police van.

The action is part of an international campaign to blockade the navel base throughout the year in a bid to stop the replacement of the controversial Trident Missile Sytem. Blockades have been taking place for the last few months by groups from around the country. See UK Indymedia Faslane Page for more reports.

9.00 - Police have succesfully removed the oilbarrel lock on blockade. Up to 6 arrests by this time.
9.15 - The group is joined by members of CIRCO, the corporate arm of the Rebel Clown Army. They will auction off the Trident Missile System.
9.45 - The blockade has been in place for 3 hours now. The police announce that they are unable to remove people from the 6 way lock on device. They are drafting in officers with specialist equipment from another force.
10.51 - Other officers have arrived and with the new equipment people were removed from the 6 way lock-on device pretty quick. The blockade has been cleared now. 14 people detained in total.
11.00 - 40 people strong demonstration in front of the main entrance. Clowns entertain the crowds and have changed the HM Navel Base sign so it now reads 'Under New Management'.

Protests rock Meat Industry Conference

Aotearoa, 01.04.2007 01:11

Over the weekend activists in Wellington have been trying their best to disrupt the New Zealand Meat Industry Conference, being held at Te Papa. On Friday around 30 activists, oppossed to the continued slaughter and cruel treatment of animals, were on hand at Te Papa to welcome the delegates. Meat Industry delegates targetted Several gourmet butchers in the central city were occupied. One of these, Meat on Tory, sells foi gras. Foi gras is a 'delicacy' prepared by force feeding a duck or goose, so its liver becomes fat. This is a particularly cruel practice, which most decent people, even meat eaters would find sickening. Butchers' stores stormed On Saturday around 40 people demonstrated at Te Papa. Chanting slogans like "Innocent animals under attack – Stand up fight back". There was a heavy Police presence and the cops harassed anyone not in a suit, including photographers. Following the demo 25 people protested at Meat on Tory. Defund the War Campaign

Portland, 31.03.2007 14:38

Three Anti-War Visitors Arrested in Gordon Smith Eugene Office
three protesters, identified as Carol Melia, Karla Cohen, and Michael Wiliams, were arrested in Smith's office for quietly sounding a pitch pipe and clicking two sticks, known as "clives, every four minutes to mark another death in Iraq.

In Eugene, Smith's office is on public property. There is no "trespass" in Oregon on any public property including federal property, basically, unless you are committing another crime, or the whole of the public is barred for established reason (such as a closed court proceeding). The three were taken from the building about 2:30 PM, about two and half hours before the building closes to the public. They were cited on highly suspect charge of "failing to comply with lawfull direction." Whatever statute this charge is based on, it probably doesn't pass Oregon constitution's protects for free speech. [read more]

Meeting with Senator Smith, No Assurance on ending War
After 2 weeks of calls and faxes I was allowed a short meeting in the office of Senator Smith. They could give me no solid deails on his future plans to end or defund the war. If you want details sooner call and get your own meeting (503) 326-3386 Senator Smith in Portland, Oregon - Print the petition attached. [read more]

Constituents of Smith receive much more respect from police than they do from the Senator
Marci Dennison (Director of Pacific Rainforest Wildlife) and Alexandra Ryan (Social Worker) were arrested yesterday [March 29] when they were not able to get assurance from Senator Smith that he will stop funding that continues the Iraq war. Alexandra described her experience; "Yesterday was my first experience with taking that kind of stand against the war and I am so glad I did it! I found it empowering to be able to take more direct action and feel like I have some sort of voice, which I felt has been lost during this administration. Yesterday I was able to reclaim my voice and make my stand and see that one person can stand up. It matters and I believe is not a fruitless labor, but makes an impact.

WHY: Whereas Senator Smith said, "I, for one, am at the end of my rope when it comes to supporting a policy that has our soldiers patrolling the same streets in the same way, being blown up by the same bombs day after day. That is absurd. It may even be criminal (he now prefers "nuts"). I cannot support that anymore", we are asking Senator Gordon Smith to agree to defund the Iraq war. We are simply asking him to walk his talk.

Surge Brigade Action on March 30

Portland, 31.03.2007 05:46

We arrived at the Broadway recruitment office at 11:00 this morning and Bonnie Tinker was already in her rocker by the front door. People of all ages stood on the sidewalk holding various signs demanding an end to the war and an end to funding the death it brings. Kay introduced herself and told me that she was holding the very same sign she held protesting the war in Viet Nam over 30 years ago. "War is not healthy for children or other living things." Colonel Ann Wright spoke and gave us all courage with her strong support. She then sat down in Bonnie's rocker, and while she was resting, the recruiter, who was trapped inside put his arm band up to the window behind her in some sort of macho display of his manhood, pointing to his "rank" insignia. A few of us demanded that he salute his superior officer, but the Colonel soon put a stop to all the fuss, saying to let him be.

Gearing up for getting down / Shrine Circus in town this weekend

Portland, 31.03.2007 00:39

Circus in town this weekend. Let's get on it.

Hello friendlies, We just found out about some jerky types coming to town next weekend and we're trying (along with Herbivore and IDA) to get as many folks as we can together to help with an outreach event. The circus is coming to town and most otherwise compassionate and caring folks don't know about the abuses going on. Basically, we want to let people know that those lions and elephants don't want to jump through flaming hoops and aren't being treated well. We'd like to get a ton of you folks out there with us to hand out information to circus-goers. This is going to be a family friendly educational outreach event, not one of your more marchy, chanty, sign hoisting type affairs. Bring the kids! We want to show that Portland doesn't want cruelty as entertainment and the more of us that show up to demonstrate that, the less likely the circus will be back next year.

Oppose Cougar Killing in the Oregon Legislature!

Portland, 31.03.2007 00:39

Please Oppose Hocus Pocus in the Legislature! Speak out for Oregon cougars now! Please attend legislative hearing at the Oregon State Capitol [Tuesday April 10th]. Consider testifying against proposed slaughter of cougars.

In 1994, Oregon voters approved Measure 18 which prohibited the cruel and unsportsmanlike practice of hound hunting of cougars & bears and baiting of bears. In April 2006, the Oregon Fish & Wildlife Commission rolled back this voter approved-initiative by adopting a plan that allows government agents to kill cougars statewide over the next few years to reach an arbitrary cougar population level. Now, cougars are in more danger than ever before. The Oregon Legislature is considering H.B. 2971, which would permit the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to deputize sport hunters as their "agents" to do the killing under the Cougar Management Plan, which would involve chasing cougars with hounds, essentially rolling back the voter approved ban.

TAKE ACTION: Please grab a friend and attend the HB 2971 Hearing! You don't even have to speak. In all honesty, we just need bodies at the hearing, wearing a "Voters Have Spoken" button, which will be provided. Your presence is every bit as important as testifying, so please consider making the special trip to Salem to make a silent (but powerful) statement... for the cougars.

Date: Thursday, March 22nd
Time: 3pm to 5pm
Location: State Capitol, 900 Court Street, NE, Hearing Room: HR D
(Don't forget to bring 6 quarters for the parking meter)

Please call or email your Oregon state representative and urge him or her to oppose H.B. 2971 when it comes up for consideration. To identify your state representative, please visit:

Schumacher Furs protests - still going strong...

Portland, 31.03.2007 00:39

We'll be here until they're gone. Every Saturday, 1:15p-5:30p 811 SW Morrison, downtown Portland

Come pass out fliers (much appreciated), hold a sign, let Portland fur hags know that animal abuse is not acceptable here. Schumacher Furs says they're closing shop (we're waiting...) because of protests; we say they're closing shop because people are finally realizing that brutalizing animals for their fur is cruel and don't want to support it (and for those holdouts who buy fur despite the cruelty, social pressure is making the Cruella DeVille look less desirable).

And if protesting fur is not your preference, join the circus protest this weekend! Elephants, tigers and other wild animals are forced to spend their lives traveling the country in cramped boxcars and trucks, and made to perform tricks using forceful, painful, and fear-producing training methods (ever heard of the bullhook?). In the wild, elephants roam 50 miles per day with their herd, and suffer great depression and frustration with the confinement and forced separation that circuses impose. See to watch video and learn more about the circus industry.

Whatever you do, please help make Portland a cruelty-free city. Stand up for animals and be a voice for the voiceless.

About sixty students from the Community Social Justice School and supporters held a press conference yesterday on the steps of the Tweed Courthouse, where the Department of Education is located, to speak out against intrusive and unfair behavior of NYPD officers as well as additional security officals who conduct security in the school.

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) were present at the school last week to monitor the metal dectection security process applied to students following concern expressed by an after school program coordinator, Karim Lopez, who was fired when the school found out he called the NYCLU.

Currently, students are waiting the decision of the Chancellor, who will rule on the issue.

Friday - Col. Ann Wright at the NE Recruiting Center!

Portland, 30.03.2007 13:38

The Surge Protection Brigade will close down the recruitment center at NE Broadway in Portland for the ninth time on Friday, March 30th at 11:00 a.m. The Brigade will be joined by Col. Ann Wright (ret.), a 29 year Army veteran and diplomat who resigned in opposition to the invasion of Iraq, and local members of Iraq Veterans Against the War. On Friday Col. Ann Wright (ret.) and local members of Iraq Veterans Against the War will be joining the Surge Protection Brigade in shutting down the Armed Forces Recruiting Center in NE Portland. This will be the ninth time the SPB will shut down the Recruiting Center, and prevent more young people from being lied to by the military.

Col. Wright explains why she will be joining the action on Friday, "Portland's Surge Protection Brigade represents tens of thousands of critical grassroots organizations all over the country that want the war ended now! Members of Congress tell us everyday that they could not have gotten timetables for withdrawal into their bills without the people of America telling them what we want. But now we have to tell them that 18 more months of war is too much! 1800 Americans will die in the next 18 months and 54,000 Iraqis. We must keep the pressure on to stop the war now, not 18 months, not 12 months from now, but now!!!"

If you are finally ready to stand up against this war, and seeing our brothers and sisters snatched up by the insatiable war machine, come to the Recruiting Center on Friday at 11:00am!!

Situation in the Congo is worsening as deportations continue

United Kingdom, 30.03.2007 12:39

On Wednesday March 28th, people gathered on the Market Square to protest continued deportations to the Democratic Republic of Congo. After a while the protesters walked across town to Bridewell Police Station (next to the Magistrates Court) and made their feeling know about government policies. The Home Office plans to deport more Congolese people from the UK in spite of evidence that it is not only still unsafe for them to return but that the situation is worsening. In Leicester over 60 turned out in a demonstration. Other cities where protests happened simultaneously were London, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester.

In March a United Nations report described the situation there as ‘deteriorating’. The Bishop of Winchester objected recently in the Lords to government claims that the country was now safe, noting that every independent organisation with first-hand experience finds ministerial assurances of safety “simply incredible”. He said that the Country Guidance Case on March 28th, at which the situation could be re-evaluated by the government, “will hear fresh evidence of ill-treatment, torture and rape of returned refugees, both at the airport and at associated holding centres”. Asylum seekers in Nottingham need your help in putting pressure on the government to admit that its deportation policy is wrong.

Whitechapel Knees Up against Starbucks

United Kingdom, 29.03.2007 16:39

On Saturday 24th March, the London's collective of Anarchitects called Space Hijackers invited the local community to a 'East End Knees Up' against the fact that the corporate chain Starbucks recentlty opened a new store in Whitechapel. Starbucks has a long history of undercutting and closing down local independent cafes, of treating their staff badly, and their coffee growers even worse.

The tea party in "defense of our area, and to show off the lovely culture we have" lasted for about 4 hours. At 1pm local people turned up outside Starbucks to set up a stall and a small sound system, and to give out maps of the area which listed alternative local places to buy coffee and keep money within the local community. Others neighbours just came across to it and joined in for a hot drink or a plate of hot food provided by the group Food Not Bombs. Police eventually stepped in and threatened to arrest those gathering around the stall for obstruction of the highway, although no one was finally arrested.
