Iran war update

Portland, 04.04.2007 11:45

Many are aware that a Russian news agency reported the opinion of a general, that the US would attack Iran on Good Friday (April 6th). It doesn't seem like a bad estimation. A check of GOP talking points and associated commentators uncovers a coordinated effort to demonize Iran, and to call for an air strike.

Meanwhile Iran has reported that two US jet bombers penetrated their airspace. The incursion is unlikely to be a "whoopsie," and is more likely a run to calibrate and target anti-radar (HARM) missiles so that the slower and more radar-reflective US bombers can strike at will, without interference from radar-targeted antiaircraft missiles. The Iranians are, of course, aware of this tactic, and are not taking the bait.

Josh Wolf May Be Freed Today!

Portland, 04.04.2007 11:44

Lawyer's for imprisoned vBlogger, Josh Wolf, and the federal prosecutor filed separate motions to release Wolf from coercive custody before U.S. Magistrate Joseph Spero, on Monday, fueling speculation that the 24 year old journalist will be freed as soon as today. Though Wolf's representatives are still under a gag order imposed by the magistrate at at the beginning of mediation last month, another clear indication of progress came when Wolf released his unedited video on his blog site this morning.

The unedited video was the target of the federal grand jury subpoena that caused him to be held at the federal holding facility, in Dublin CA, now at 226 days, a record amount of time for any coercive action against a journalist in the United States history.

WHERE'S WALDEN? asked by S. Oregon Citizens

Portland, 04.04.2007 11:43

A group of about 30 people from several different peace & progressive groups protested the Iraq occupation and sent a delegation of about 15 women into Congressman Greg Walden's Medford office to request a meeting with the congressman. The women came out about 30 minutes later and reported that Walden's staff had not yet been able to arrange a conference call with Walden for the group, but invited them to return at 11 am next Thursday, April 5, at which time they expect to be able to schedule a conference call with the congressman.

Walden's staff said Walden was in Lakeview on Friday, but claimed that they have no idea where he will be next Thursday or anytime next week. Walden is one of the few members of Congress who does not have a calendar on his website. It is very difficult for the public to know when and where he will appear.

Walden's staff said Walden was in Lakeview on Friday, but claimed that they have no idea where he will be next Thursday or anytime next week. Walden is one of the few members of Congress who does not have a calendar on his website. It is very difficult for the public to know when and where he will appear.

The action was planned to call attention to the arrest in Bend on March 20th of six women, most of them grandmothers, who went to Walden's Bend office hoping to get a conference call from him. When none was arranged, they elected to stay in the building after it closed and were arrested by Bend Police. We don't believe that Walden has dropped the charges against them.

Video of Surge Protector Brigade Arrests

Portland, 04.04.2007 11:41

The 13 1/2 minute video features an interview with Col. Ann Wright (ret.) as well as footage of the five arrests and a confrontation between the grannies refusing entry to an 18 year old seeking to enlist in the army as an infantryman.

A Portland police officer, Officer Schaffer argued with the Brigade, calling them Communists for preventing the young man from entering the building, and manhandled one of the grandmothers on two occasions, as he was going in and out of the building.

After informing an officer that they would refuse to move their rocking chairs, other officers were called and the arrests were made, handcuffing the three grandmothers and two grandfathers, leading them off to the squad cars.

US Supreme Court Refuses To Uphold Habeas Corpus

San Francisco Bay Area, 04.04.2007 09:40

On April 2nd, the US Supreme Court refused to grant review to a lower court ruling which upheld the constitutionality of the habeas corpus-stripping provision of the Military Commissions Act. The Australian David Hicks was the first Guantanamo prisoner to plead guilty; in exchange for being released in nine months he was ordered to not talk to the press until after the upcoming Australian elections. Several higher profile detainees were transfered from more secretive CIA run prisons to Guantanamo last September; Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Abd al-Nashiri both confessed to a series of "terrorist" attacks, but al-Nashiri admitted that he only confessed to avoid additional torture.

Emergency Demo: No War Against Iran!

San Diego, 04.04.2007 02:10

The Bush administration continues moving closer to a nuclear attack on Iran. Last week, the Russian News and Information Agency Novosti (RIA-Novosti) quoted military experts predicting the US will attack Iran on April 6th, Good Friday. According to RIA-Novosti, the imminent assault will target Iranian air and naval defense capabilities, armed forces headquarters as well as key economic assets and administration headquarters. Massive air strikes will be deployed, possibly tactical nuclear weapons as well, and the Bush administration will attempt to exploit the resulting chaos and political unrest by installing a pro-US government... We, in the United States, have a MORAL OBLIGATION to try to STOP THIS ATROCITY FROM HAPPENING!

Congress is in recess, which means rep Susan Davis (D) may be at her office on April 4, 2007. The US may attack Iran on April 6, 2007.

As Wolf's heroic contribution to the cause of a free press may be about to come to an end, the debate is sure to continue and one expects that Wolf has been handed a voice that he will use to share a personal victory with all who value freedom of the press throughout the world. With it comes another lesson to leaders who too often forget that the heart of a free people beats not in a document, or in a seat of power, but in those who stand up for liberty against oppression.

Josh Wolf to Be Freed Today at 5pm

San Francisco Bay Area, 04.04.2007 00:11

Josh Wolf writes on his blog this morning, "During the course of this saga I have repeatedly offered to allow a judge to be the arbiter over whether or not my video material has any evidentiary value. Today, you the public have the opportunity to be the judge and I am confident you will see, as I do, that there is nothing of value in this unpublished footage." There will be a rally and press conference at 5pm today on the steps of City Hall.

Dems Lay Down for Bush's Next War: Time to Go from Protest to Resistance!

DC, 03.04.2007 22:12

You could close your eyes and pretend it isn't happening. Pretend that the new Democratic Congress—after four years of torture, mass murder and war crimes against the people of Iraq—didn't just promise the War-Criminal-In-Chief that they would do nothing to stop a new and even more dangerous war against Iran. Pretend that these same Democrats—who have sold you out so many times and at the cost of so many lives—didn't just promise to give the President more money than he even asked for to fight his current wars! Pretend that somehow history—and the people of the Middle East—will forgive you for meeting this news with passivity, silence or at best "protest as usual"…

Pit of chicken corpses found by Open Rescue Collective

Aotearoa, 03.04.2007 02:12

Yesterday afternoon animal rights activists from the Open Rescue Collective discovered a fly-infested pit filled with rotting broiler chicken corpses behind a Foxton factory farm. Activists say the dump is illegal as the corpses were piled up, along with household refuse, in an open pit behind the farm. Many bodies were torn apart and had been partially eaten by predators. Other corpses were maggot infested. One chicken was discovered alive but injured among the corpses, a clear breach of animal welfare legislation.

Nottingham activists succesfully blockade nuclear submarine base in Scotland

United Kingdom, 03.04.2007 01:11

Over 50 people from Nottingham and Derby successfully blockaded the Faslane Nuclear Naval Base In Scotland today. Various blockade groups in intriguing lock-on devices and some plastered together blocked the main entrance to the site. Police started removing people from 8.30 onwards but had problems with removing people from a 6 way lock-on device, which held strong for another 2 hours. Police had to draft in specialist equipment from other forces to deal with the device. 17 people have been arrested. The blockade lasted for over 4 hours.

Tent City 4

Seattle, 02.04.2007 18:38

St. Jude Catholic Church welcomed Tent City 4 to its Redmond location on February 10th. The city of Redmond, where a one bedroom apartment generally rents for $911 to $1188 a month, issued a permit, but then rescinded it, threatening to fine St. Jude up to $500.00 a day for occupying the space. The stay could end up costing the church more than $37,000, which it says it will pay with donations, not parish funds.

In March, I visited tent city and interviewed pastor David Rogerson and three residents of tent city.

WHERE'S WALDEN? asked by S. Oregon Citizens

Rogue Valley, 02.04.2007 04:46

--Medford, Oregon / 3/30/07

Here are some photo's I took today along with a brief report of events outside the office of Congressman Greg Walden, R-OR, in Medford on Friday afternoon. Other Rogue IMC volunteers contribued including "comments" to this story which have some good photos... Check out video clips, too.

A group of about 30 people from several different peace & progressive groups protested the Iraq occupation and sent a delegation of about 15 women into Walden's office to request a meeting with the congressman. The women came out about 30 minutes later and reported that Walden's staff had not yet been able to arrange a conference call with Walden for the group, but invited them to return at 11 am next Thursday, April 5, at which time they expect to be able to schedule a conference call with the congressman.--Allen Hallmark

Portland, 02.04.2007 03:38

I was born in America, but I don't know where I am now.

The attached poem I wrote while I was in jail for christmas and New Years. I was in jail, because I refused to pay for a dent they put in their police car with my head while I was hancuffed. I was assualted by a bouncer because of mistaken Identity. Then beaten up and mugged by Portland Police. they stole $50 out of my wallet, Choked and beat me up while hancuffed. After never being read my rights and being denied a call to a lawer and a request for a for a breathalizer test so I could prove I wasn't drunk. I was put in an isolation cell where I sat Bleeding and in extreme pain from a badly sprained ankle do to a boot from a cop until 11:30am The next morning so they could get there story straight.

Another poem by Shane Carroll : "Injustice" - a poem about Lukus Glen who was murdered by Tigard police right down the street from my moms house.

Sea Shepherd Antarctic season wrapup-Japanese Whalers defeated!

Portland, 02.04.2007 03:38

The Sea Shepherds antarctic cruise ended in victory over the Japanese factory whaling fleet. Operation Leviathan ended with the fire-damaged Nissan Maru limping back to Japan(she just got back days ago!) and the Sea Shepherds ships Farley Mowat and Robert Hunter sailing in triumph to Australia.

The mission began in high drama as Japanese bureaucrats forced Belize to pull the Farley Mowat's registration hours after they cleared harbor. This meant they were legally PIRATES-just like us at WSQT, not registered to any government. This meant any nations navy could legally sink the Farley Mowat and capture or kill everyone on board! The Sea Shepherds refused to back down... To evade Japanese ocean surveillance satellites, the Sea Shepherds sailed into the antarctic ice pack, where satellites could not detect their wakes...and engaged the Nisshin Maru and her fleet of killer ships. One of these rammed the Robert Hunter but did little damage. At the height of the battle, the Sea Shepherds closed in on the Nisshin Maru and nailed her blood drains shut with nail guns and steel plates. They also heaved aboard 6 1 liter bottles of sinking, rancid-smelling butyric acid!

Kucinich: Global Warming and Global Warring

Portland, 02.04.2007 03:38

Making campaign stops in Washington on March 30th, Dennis Kucinich spoke out against global warming and global warring. He said our disconnection from the physical world caused both. We fail to see the interconnectedness of all living beings, so we do not take care of the earth. Our cultural belief that war is inevitable has created more war; it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Below is Jeff's latest Dispatch from prison and also a nice blog post about Jeff from Alan Bisbort and a link to a new song a supporter sent us about Jeff.

Millions Threatened by Climate Change
By Jeffrey Free Luers

Earlier this year the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in their strongest language yet, attributed the earth's current climate change to human activity. While a few skeptics, including conservative media, continue to deny global warming as cooked-up liberal science, most educated and rational people are increasingly concerned about the steps being taken to halt climate change. With the US government refusing to take any action, people have cause for concern. Our country needs radical change and it needs it now. We do not have the luxury of time. Acting to limit climate change now could prevent future wars because in a few decades time war will not be fought for oil, it will be fought for water. We must respond like the lives of hundreds of millions of people depend on our actions, because they very likely do. ~Jeffrey Free Luers

We don't have any updates at this point yet about his re-sentencing, but we greatly appreciate the amazing support and donations we have been receiving over the past few weeks. Although we are well on our way to being able to afford good legal representation for Jeff, donations are still very much needed
