Manifestacion Sábado 14 de abril: ¡Acude y tráete a tus amigos!

Canarias, 11.04.2007 00:06

¡mándense a mudar!

Kiwi troops contribute to terrorism

Aotearoa, 11.04.2007 00:06

The NZDF is preparing to send another round of troops off to Afghanistan to contribute to the on-going occupation of the country by US and NATO troops. "Phil Goff would have us believe that the NZDF is all about peacekeeping and reconstruction in Afghanistan. But six years on, there is no more peace or stability in Afghanistan than there was when the US started bombing the country" said Peace Action member Valerie Morse. "When you consider that there are more than 20,000 US troops in the country, it is really not surprising that there is continuing conflict. The New Zealand troops are effectively there to support the US-puppet government in Kabul and to prop up numbers." "The government has done a good propaganda job convincing New Zealanders that NZDF deployments to Afghanistan are necessary and beneficial. If we look behind the rhetoric, it is easy to see that this is just another battlefield in Bush's imperial war of conquest. Clark and Goff want to be sure to stay on the right side of the US by offering up troops. It is a sick bit of double-speak." BioJustice 2007 to Hit Boston!!

Boston, 10.04.2007 20:03

The biotech industry [Biotech Industry Organization, BIO] is bringing thousands of executives, lawyers, public relations people and corporate scientists to Boston in early May to promote their agenda of genetically engineered food, unaffordable high-tech medicines and dangerous 'biodefense' research that increases the threat of new biological weapons. Through parades, rallies, educational events and publications, music, a free health care clinic and free daily non-GMO meals, Biojustice 2007 will dramatize popular resistance to this agenda and highlight a wealth of community-based alternatives.

Why we reject the prospect of nuclear power

San Diego, 10.04.2007 09:38

Have we forgotten "The greatest environmental catastrophe in the history of humanity"?

Predictably, the nuclear industry is, once again, rearing its ugly head. The nuclear lobby is using global warming to sell us a bill of fraudulent and deadly goods. They want us to believe that nuclear power is "safe, cheap and clean". We have heard that before. They insist that it's the perfect solution to our energy future. It's time that we expose their snake oil propaganda.

Congressman Walden found > sort of; Medford's 4/5/07 TV Mtng

Rogue Valley, 10.04.2007 00:40

"On Thursday of last week, Oregon's 2nd district had its biggest collective victory to date! It took place in Medford, but it was the result of months and years of building our peace and justice infrastructure in every corner of the district through local groups in small towns from Madras to Jacksonville and Mosier to Ione."--Amy Dudley, Rural Organizing Project (ROP)

"We were astonished to learn that we would soon be meeting with Walden himself using teleconferencing equipment that had just recently been installed."--Allen Hallmark, Citizens For Peace & Justice (CP&J)

As most of you know, a group of us went to the offices of Oregon District 2's notoriously absent congressman, Greg Walden, yesterday (April 5, 2007) expecting to meet with his staff to negotiate a date & time for a teleconference with Walden, instead we got Walden himself via Internet teleconferencing equipment for a little more than one hour.

Our group included Mary (our fearless leader), Arlene, Linda, Jill, Marilyn, Mori, Bronson, Lynn, Wes and Allen.

Bottom line: We did get Walden to commit to holding a town hall meeting in our area during the August recess of Congress and that he will try to give us at least one week’s, possibly two-weeks’ notice of the scheduling of the town hall. But no firm date was set and none is likely to be set until late July at the earliest.

¡Resistencia Visual! Images from the people’s struggle in Oaxaca

NYC, 09.04.2007 20:09

ASAR-O stencilOn June 14th of 2006, the governor of Oaxaca, a state in southern Mexico, ordered the removal of striking teachers from the city plaza. The authorities, which ranged from Federal police, Municipal forces to firefighters, were unsuccessful in removing the teachers despite battling them with tear gas and live ammunition. The teachers, with the support of the surrounding community, erected barricades to prevent the police from regaining control of downtown Oaxaca City. Three days later the APPO (Asamblea Popular del Pueblo de Oaxaca) was convened which called upon people in Oaxaca to organize themselves into popular assemblies. People organized by street blocks, neighborhoods and municipalities to work cooperatively and govern themselves while demanding the resignation of the Ruiz administration.

Growing from this momentum a group of artists began to utilize their skills as printmakers to communicate the demands of the APPO. The collective, now known as ASARO, created stencils, woodblock prints, and posters that began to appear on walls all over Oaxaca. Following the traditions of Mexican popular art and printmaking, ASARO offers the movement new images that communicate some of the values and demands being made in Oaxaca.

The Visual Resistance Collective, CASA, and Carlito’s Cafe are proud to present the artwork of ASARO in NYC this Wednesday, April 11th, 7-10pm @ Carlito’s Café y Galería, 1701 Lexington Ave (bet 106 & 107 st).

Today at The Carter Center in Atlanta, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and McDonald's announced a landmark agreement to work together to improve the wages and working conditions of the farmworkers who pick Florida tomatoes. After two years of escalating pressure by the CIW and its allies, McDonald's has agreed to all of the CIW's demands and more.

"Two years ago, our agreement with Yum Brands marked the first step toward a distant dream of ensuring human rights for workers in Florida’s fields," said Lucas Benitez of the CIW. "Today, with McDonald’s, we have taken another major step toward a world where we as farmworkers can enjoy a fair wage and humane working conditions in exchange for the hard and essential work we do every day."

Update from Guatemala -- Rios Montt: In jail or in Congress?

Austin, 09.04.2007 18:39

Six weeks ago, I began my work here as a human rights accompanier in the Ixcán region of Guatemala. In a very short time, I have had the opportunity to listen to incredible stories which constantly remind me why I am here. It is important to continue in this struggle for justice and to remind people (like you) about a forgotten genocide. A civil war ravaged this country for 36 years which ended with the peace accords in 1996 and more than 200,000 civilians dead. 90% of the casualties were at the hands of the US-backed Guatemalan army under the auspices of fighting “communism.” In 2000 and 2001, a courageous group of war survivors filed charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes against former military dictators Romeo Lucas Garcia and Efrain Rios Montt and their military high commands in the Guatemalan court system. Seven years later, these cases remain in the investigative phase due to a lack of political will to bring the accused to justice. [atx imc note: Sign this petition to bring to justice the perpetrators of genocide in Guatemala. Congressmen Michael McCaul and Ron Paul sit on powerful committees in the US House that can exert an influence on the genocide case. If they are your representatives, and even if they aren't, be sure to contact them demanding that they help initiate the prosecution of the genocide case. Also see A Dictator's Reprise in Guatemala, written by another atx imc activist.]

Dear Supporters... (Josh Harper Update)

Portland, 09.04.2007 12:39

I imagine that by now many of you will have heard about my recent misfortune. I figure that's as good of an excuse as any for not writing a proper update for the last few months and for subjecting you all to another round of my prison diary "Factoids."

This Housing unit isn't very special. An alert soldier in the war on terror recently intercepted an interview I had participated in for a small skate / dumpstering / vegan 'zine. I was promptly grabbed from my unit and placed on 24 hour lock down in the "the hole". Now the FBI is investigating and I expect to be in here for a while. It's horrible but at least I get the joy of imagining Mr. Maturity ( A.K.A Jake Conroy) chucking while he exclaims, "heh heh. ' the hole'." Good times.

Millions of 9 year olds can't be wrong. Those of you who have written me lately to mock my new found love of the Harry Potter Novels should know that I feel no shame about it... with one exception. The glee I felt when Harry had his first kiss with Cho was probably a little embarrassing. But in book 4 Hermione talks about moving past advocacy and towards "direct action" in her fight for house elf rights! See, I'm actually doing same deep political reading.

Sea Lions on the River

Portland, 09.04.2007 12:39

Tomorrow is Easter, a day to celebrate the turning of the wheel, from decay to resurrection, from winter to spring, from death to life. And in a fitting salute to this ancient Pagan (yes! Pagan!) holiday, the runs are here: The salmon are pulsing through the river again. Life comes surging into the world again with the spring. And with it come the sea lions, gliding through the water with the salmon, as they have for thousands of years.

I can hear them from my window here, barking and trumpeting from the waters as they lounge along the shore, as they gleefully swirl through the water, as they break the grey-green, splashing surface with their whiskered, dog-like faces. I counted four of them this morning, as I walked along the shore. This is good. This is how the spring goddess comes dancing back into the world: She comes with bright blossoms and soft petals and perfumed air. She comes with singing birds and unfurling fronds and awakening earth. And, here in Cascadia, she comes with the salmon and the sea lion.
