Pace SDS Bounces University President

NYC, 20.05.2007 12:09

A victory for a student movement. A repressor is gone. A union busting, over-paid arrogant University President is out the door and it's all because of the pressure from the students. The students pushed the faculty to push votes of no confidence. The students communicated with other students about the issues and organized them. The students told outsiders about the repression going on inside the university's walls. It all added up until Caputo could take no more.

Desastre en Los Cancajos

Canarias, 20.05.2007 00:11

June 9th Day of Solidarity with Jeffrey Free Luers

Portland, 19.05.2007 22:39

June marks the seventh year that our friend and comrade, Jeffrey "Free" Luers has been imprisoned and held captive by the state. Sentenced to an outrageous 22 years and 8 months for burning three Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) at Romania Chevrolet in Eugene, Jeff has continued to be active in prison and fight back with his words and inspiration. Although Jeff recently won his appeal and is expecting a reduced sentence, this case is not over:

"I have spoken with my attorney and there are still many battles ahead. Hard choices will have to be made. I am by no means close to walking out of prison, just one step closer. This is a victory, and while my own personal struggle is making headway others are just beginning."

We encourage people to organize events for Jeff and other political prisoners, uniting struggles for human, earth, and animal liberation.

Information on Tuesday, June 13th Eugene, Oregon event for Jeff Luers here.

Report on Dobie Action and Arrests

Austin, 19.05.2007 16:38

REPORT on COUNTER RECRUITMENT ACTIONS and ARRESTS -- I wasn't able to make the actual action, but joined in later in solidarity at the jail to hear first hand accounts and monitor the legal situation. Spencer Crowl and Sylvia Benini were arrested yesterday in conjunction with a small, but impactful antiwar protest on campus. Following a lunchtime rally on the east mall, demonstrators marched to the Dobie to engage the army recruiters in dialogue. The Dobie is deemed "private property" despite the recruiting stations housed there being funded publically. The Army station was locked down upon arrival, with APD ordering protestors outside of the mall. Not content that their first amendment rights were being honored, that they couldn't adequately challenge the recruiters message, Crowl returned to ask why he wasn't allowed to engage the system in which he has no choice but to financially support. He was promptly arrested and following, Benini entered the building (after donning a pink apron in reference to CodePink who is well known to law enforcement as unafraid to seek justice via such risk) in an attempt to deliver a pamphlet; only to be arrested as well. The Austin People's Legal Collective provided legal support and maintained vigil out front of the jail, while activists came and went, a few lingering into the wee hours. Crowl was released at approximately 11:15 pm, but sheriff's held up Benini's final paperwork, despite having been processed at the same rate as Crowl, and was not released until 3:25 am.

First Annual Austin Community Garden Tour 2007

Austin, 19.05.2007 16:38

The first annual Austin Community Gardens Tour will take place this Sunday, April 29th, from 11 to 3 pm at five different community garden locations in the City of Austin. Austin's Community Gardens operate as sustainable agri-ecosystems and microcosms of neighborhood participation, cooperation, and ecological diversity within Austin's urban landscape. Recent pressures of neighborhood development coupled with a spike in real estate prices threaten the long- term viability of community gardens in Austin, and elsewhere. While other cities in North America such as San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, Portland, Oregan and Vancouver, B.C have taken steps aimed at protecting their valuable community gardens, the City of Austin has not yet acted to promote urban agriculture through preserving and creating community gardens. The Community Garden Tour can act as a powerful tool showing larger-scale support of community gardens in Austin's neighborhoods and can bring people together, inspiring people to plant their own vegetable and herb gardens. Perhaps with enough support, in the coming years the City of Austin could adopt similar strategies to promote urban agriculture and community participation.

Secret Military Documents Links Ex-dictator and Congressional Hopeful to Genocide

Austin, 19.05.2007 16:38

Last month, Guatemala’s leading newspaper unveiled that the nation’s Attorney General possesses secret military documents which connect former president Efraìn Rìos Montt to army-led massacres perpetrated in the early 1980’s. Nonetheless, he has refused to initiate legal proceedings to investigate charges of genocide and war crimes filed against him in 2001. In the three-page cover story, which ran in Prensa Libre’s Mar. 18 Sunday edition, reporter Lorena Seijo exposes that last August the Attorney General’s office received a copy of Plan Sofia, documents outlining military operations largely carried out in the Quichè province from 1982 to 1983, which links the then Army high command and their commander-in-chief, Rios Montt, to massacres committed in numerous villages during that period. However, Delia Davila, head of the prosecutor's department of human rights within the Attorney General's office, defends their decision to not interrogate Rìos Montt. She insists that the authenticity of the documents has not been verified. In January, in order to ascertain whether the Plan Sofia documents are genuine, the presiding judge in the genocide case, Roberto Peñate, ordered that the Minster of Defense, Ronaldo Cecilio Leiva, present the original Plan Sofia documents and other known military records from the same era before an open court. In response, Leiva mailed a letter to the judge on Feb. 8 arguing that the judicial resolution "violates Article 30 of the constitution, which protects the confidentiality of military affairs." Leiva stated that since military affairs are issues of national security they must remain classified and, furthermore, that Plan Sofia does not exist. To prevent the secret documents from becoming public, Leiva presented an appeal which claimed that these records, among others, are off-limits to the public. Judge Peñate rejected the appeal and reminded the Minister of Defense that the accusation is not against him. Peñate summoned Leiva, to share with the court the entirety of any original military documents relevant to the case, for Mar. 26 – some three days after the twenty-fifth anniversary of the military coup which brought Rìos Montt to power. Leiva appealed and, to date, the decision on whether the military must release their secret documents from the counterinsurgency campaigns rests in the Constitutional Court.

Are you On the Fringe?

Austin, 19.05.2007 16:38

On the Fringe, a weekly hour-long radical politics show on KVRX (91.7FM), is seeking two things:

1) Feedback. Over the past three years, On the Fringe has been a reliable source for news, debate, and commentary by students, activists, radicals, and most often radical student activists. Groups like Austin Indymedia, MECHA, UT's Student Farmworker Alliance chapter, Palestine Solidarity Committee, Youth Activists of Austin, Campaign to the End the Death Penalty, Campus Environmental Center, and Inside Books Project have all found their voices welcomed and amplified on many a Monday evening. Over the past year we covered everything from student counter-recruitment activities to the campaign against McDonald's for fair food, from Texas' anti-coal plant movement to ongoing efforts to free immigrant children jailed at a private prison in Hutto. On the Fringe will no doubt continue to cover the people and their struggles, usually ignored or undermined by the mainstream media, to challenge corporate capitalism, racism, patriarchy, and other forms of exploitation. But we receive precious little listener feedback, and surely there are ways to improve the show, maybe even other directions we can go… What would you like to hear in On the Fringe? More debate? More coverage of women's, queer, or local issues, perhaps? More live music? More hard news coverage and less commentary? More airtime for listener call-ins? In what ways should a weekly hour-long radio show on Austin's 91.7FM be challenging empire here and abroad, and how?

2) Fresh ideas and activist support. You can answer that question and break new ground in local media by getting involved with On the Fringe. For a while now, we've arguably been understaffed. I'm a white male student organizer, which means I have limited time to work on On the Fringe and a perspective that is limited in significant ways. If On the Fringe is to grow at all, I think there needs to be a small group of folks who can share the work of organizing interviews, editing audio, maintaining a website, DJing, to plain speaking out on-air - no experience necessary, we'll have simple trainings and skillshares. The show is more exciting and stimulating when all four microphones in the booth are in use, when there's more spontaneous discussion than binary question and answer. If a particular activist group wants to claim five or ten minutes in the show's hour on a weekly or monthly basis to regularly call in and update listeners on their work, that would be great. A few ideas for growing On the Fringe: A new website for the show, which will host podcasts (downloadable MP3s) of show highlights; recording PSAs, which are played round-the-clock on KVRX, for more local groups; during the show, more debates and opportunities for listener call-ins and comments.

Where On the Fringe stands right now:

The show will absolutely go on in the fall. But we have our usual time, 7-8 on Mondays, reserved for the summer. I cannot support and grow On the Fringe over the summer by myself, and I need some indication that there is wider interest in this project in the next few days if we're to continue broadcasting over the next three-month interval. This could be a time for experimentation and training of new DJs for the show, among other things.

If you have questions, comments, critiques, or want to get involved at all, direct them to the comments on this post or e-mail me at ansel [at] riseup [dot] net. Thanks!

Community Disrupts Presentation of Corrupt Union Leader

San Diego, 19.05.2007 10:38

On Thursday May 18 at 7 pm, Elba Esther Gordillo Morales was scheduled to speak in the Jose Cuervo Tequila lecture series at the Institute of the Americas, UC San Diego. Gordillo is the leader of Mexico's national teachers' union and is complicit in the murders of numerous dissident teachers and the rampant electoral fraud that put ultra right-wing president Felipe Calderon into power. A coalition of UCSD students, Mexican immigrants, high school students and other community members attended the talk and treated Goridllo as she treats the teachers in her union - by silencing her.

Twenty people from the coalition were at the talk and prepared to do whatever it took to disrupt Gordillo's speech. The talk was prefaced by an introduction by the president of the Institute. He lavished praise on Gordillo and said that she was one of the few people in the 90's who was working for true "change" in Mexico. If by this he meant the kind of neoliberal reforms described on the Institute's website, that "change" is definitely not the kind that would benefit the great majority of Mexicans.

After the introduction and an overly affectionate exchange between him and Gordillo, she began her presentation. Almost immediately, she was interrupted by the first coalition member. --Read More--

The United Workers Association, an organization that represents the stadium cleaners, have organized the tour to protest the use of state funds to create sub-poverty working conditions. Police Brutality in Oak Park

San Diego, 18.05.2007 19:42

Yesterday, May 17, 2007, at 4:00pm, at the corner of Laurel St. and Balsa, in San Diego, a community member was maced, pepper sprayed, kicked, and arrested without reason. Four officers used unnecessary force in fear of an imaginary weapon. What was the reason for the arrest and the unnecessary force?

The police said, after the community member had been placed in the back of the police vehicle, after calling the entire family out to see this incident, including a 16 year old boy and a 11 year old girl, they thought he was going to reach for a weapon in his pocket. The four officers included 3 men: J.C. Hunter, D. West, and Andrew Tafoya, and one woman officer: T. Clendenen. After the community member was already on the ground and hands in cuffs, officer J.C. Hunter continued his authoritative force by kicking his stomach and pepper spraying his eyes. All actions were unnecessary, but if the officers were in fear of an imaginary weapon, once the community member was in cuffs on the ground with three officers holding him down, what was the reason for officer J.C. Hunter kicking and pepper spraying him?

All Roads Lead To Palestine

United Kingdom, 17.05.2007 23:40

On the 14th May, 4 activists, based at the ASBO Community Centre in Nottingham got on their bikes and set off for an epic journey to mainland Europe. The project 'Pedal Powered Clowns to Palestine' brings together performance, clowning, action and pedal power to raise awareness of the situation in Palestine as well as entertaining and supporting the Palestinian Community through play. In the last few months the group raised money through benefit events in Nottingham to fund their trip. The first leg of the journey will be by train to Hull and then onto the ferry to Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Once in Europe a few dates have been planned to work with other groups and visit some social centres. From then on the route will lead North into Germany to the G8 summit in early June. The idea is to join the G8 protests and add a creative element to the planned actions. At the end of June the group will set course for Palestine.
