Austin, 30.05.2007 17:09

A few minutes later, probably close to 15 minutes after I was first stopped he comes back and says “I’m going to have to ask you to go ahead and dismount your bike and have a seat on the curb.” A sick feeling comes over me. I know this can’t be good...Then he asks “Are you a member of any group or organization that would give you cause to be on the terror watch list?”

Signatures for Petition to Stop the Raids on Immigrants Flow in from Other States

Boston, 30.05.2007 16:09

Last May 1st. the Boston May Day Coalition launched two petition campaigns to provide an outlet for people to express their outrage about the way the United States government is dealing with undocumented migrant workers. The injustice, abuse and mistreatment of people who risk their lives to come in search of work to the United States is so clear that it is not even necessary to explain it. While the Senate debates a military fortification of the southern border and unfair and exploitative guest worker programs, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement police continue to raid work places and neighborhoods throughout the country.

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.05.2007 09:39

Members of the San Francisco Immigrant Legal and Education Network (SFILEN) entered San Francisco's City Hall on Thursday, May 24 hoping to influence the 2007-2008 city budget. SFILEN's request, entitled the Immigrant Rights Budget Proposal and also known as the "People's Budget", asks for city money to go towards workforce development and employment, housing assistance, and family support, all of which they contend will strengthen the city's communities and add to economic growth.

Convergence centers and camps are being set up. On May 28th, there was a large march against the summit held by European Union and Asian economics ministers from ASEM. Trial of Ed Rosenthal Continues

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.05.2007 09:39

The re-trial of Ed Rosenthal on charges related to his growing medicinal cannabis in Oakland is nearing an end- the jury was sent home on May 29th after several hours of deliberations. Several members of the local medical cannabis community have refused to testify against Rosenthal. These individuals had been told that they might be held in contempt by the court, but on Tuesday, May 29th, they were told that they would be excused. Judge Breyer has revealed that the jury has been asking questions about medical marijuana.

Cindy Sheehan Calls It Quits

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.05.2007 09:39

Cindy Sheehan published an open letter on Memorial Day whereby she announced her decision to return to a non-activist life apart from the anti-war movement. Cindy Sheehan first rose to prominence in the summer of 2005 when she set up a camp outside of George Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch and held vigil in order to meet with the President and ask him what noble cause her son had died for. Since then, she has been villified by war supporters and Democrats as she continued to campaign for an end to the war.

Portland, 29.05.2007 23:41

On April 3rd, a brief aquaintance in Michigan called the Oregon State Cops, saying I was gonna commit suicide and might confront cops if they were sent to my room. The funny thing is, I had plane tickets for Omaha the next morning to take a week to relax and think things over. A state cop called me and egged me on, harassing me over the phone, then he said cops were waiting at the door ready to break it in and get me.

Antikapitalismus von rechts - Versuch und Irrtum

Germany, 29.05.2007 23:09

Happy Birthday Camp Titnore!

United Kingdom, 29.05.2007 20:39

CAMP Titnore in Worthing, West Sussex, has this weekend been celebrating its first anniversary.

And as well as celebrating the achievement of the last year, it is looking ahead by calling for more people to join the occupation and for solidarity action against the businesses threatening to destroy the countryside location.

It was at dawn on May 28 2006 that a determined group of environmentalists moved onto ancient woodland off Titnore Lane in Durrington, near Worthing, in protest at plans for an 875-home estate, massive Tesco superstore and new access roads.

After many years of local campaigning had failed to persuade Worthing Borough Council to oppose the development, they said direct action was now the only way they could continue the fight.

They didn’t really think the camp had any chance of lasting more than a few days, or weeks at the most.

How MEMRI fooled the U.S Media with its Mickey Mouse Translation

Now, several native Arabic speakers have produced their own translations of MEMRI's "Mickey Mouse Translation" that reveal just how Israeli "translations" distort media reporting. "Peace Mom" Sheehan Renounces Democrats, Is Smeared In Liberal Blogs

Mon May 28, 2007 at 09:57:01 AM PDT I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called "Face" of the American anti-war movement. Especially since I renounced any tie I have remaining with the Democratic Party, I have been further trashed on such "liberal blogs" as the Democratic Underground. Being called an "attention whore" and being told "good riddance" are some of the more milder rebukes. Cindy Sheehan's "Resignation Letter" at Democratic blog "Daily Kos"

Parliament Square Peace Campers in Court

United Kingdom, 29.05.2007 15:39

At least 12 activists have now been charged under SOCPA in connection with the No More Fallujahs Peace Camp and Naming the Dead actions in Parliament Square and Whitehall on 29-30 October 2006. Reports from the actions here.

In a planned act of civil disobedience against the occupation of Iraq, campaigners set up an unauthorised camp in Parliament Square for 24 hours last October. In all, over 100 people took part in workshops and discussions and held 'Naming the Dead' remembrance ceremonies in Parliament Square and Whitehall during the action.

Most of the defendants have been in court over the past two weeks, with the judgements to date illustrating the arbitrary nature of British "justice".

Annie's Cabin Groundtruthing Blitz Saturday, June 2nd

Portland, 29.05.2007 15:38

The Decision Notice for the Annie's Cabin Timber Sale is scheduled to be released in late May or early June. This Bureau of Land Management (BLM) timber sale threatens to log approximately 500 acres around the Molalla River Shared-Trail System used for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Recent groundtruthing expeditions have discovered red tree vole nests, Oregon slender salamanders, and other types of nests. Bark needs your help to groundtruth the entire sale to ensure every acre is covered.

Please RSVP by May 31st with Joseph at so teams and ground-truthing assignments can be created ahead of time. Please let us know if you can drive, your vehicle clearance and number of people with you. No previous groundtruthing experience necessary. A quick training will be held before we split up to groundtruth.

We will be meeting at the Daily Grind (4026 SE Hawthorne Blvd) at 8:50am. Carpools will be leaving no later than 9:15am. We plan to try to get people back to Portland by 5pm. For people outside of Portland, we plan to meet at the Hardy Creek Trailhead at 10:15am. If you need directions, e-mail Joseph at okuni(at)

USFS dumping its most profitable campgrounds

Portland, 29.05.2007 15:38

The USFS is rapidly moving to privatize the operation of its most popular, highest revenue producing, campgrounds. Less-developed campgrounds and those incapable to producing a positive revenue stream will be closed or their seasons of operation severely curtailed. Those facilities that will be privatized will in many cases be heavily developed by the concessionaire in an effort to maximize revenues. Nothing I've just said is new, as you will see below. What's new is that the pace of this privatization / commercialization has accelerated to the point where it is possible to see the process occurring on a almost daily basis.

Pasted below are newspaper articles published in the past two days. One is from Arkansas, the other from Georgia. They are explicit and they should serve as a warning to everyone. Neither, however, mentions the Recreation Site Facility Master Planning Process --- the process now taking place nationwide and threatening to bring privatization, outsourcing, decommissioning, and/or shorter seasons of operation of your favorite Forest Service campground no matter where you live.

Here's the warning we offered in April 2005. The good news is that Congress is none too pleased with what the Forest Service is doing.

Police Repression at ASEM Protest in Hamburg

Germany, 29.05.2007 12:08

At least 5,000 people gathered on the streets of Hamburg on Monday, 28 May, to protest against the 7th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). There was a massive police presence (almost outnumbered protesters!) and the march was surrounded by thick riot police lines. The procession was repeatedly stopped and provoked by cops, while snatch squads and other units tried to penetrate the mass. Water cannons, pepper spray, kicks and punches were used repeatedly. So the organisers eventually decided to call the demonstration off and participants then dispersed in small groups. A large part of the demonstration, however, was 'kettled' by police while other were 'hunted down' as they headed back to the Rota Flora social center. At least 86 people were arrested, some still detained.

Immigration Activists Clash at Queer Democratic Club

San Diego, 29.05.2007 09:41

Immigration-rights attorney Lilia Velasquez and Mary Moreno Richardson, reverend canon of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, were brought in to speak at the predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club May 24. While they largely agreed on the need to protect immigrants' rights against abusive Border Patrol enforcement and private Minuteman vigilantism, they disagreed dramatically on the merits of the current "compromise" immigration bill before the U.S. Senate. Richardson hailed the bill as a start for a long-needed discussion on the issue, while Velasquez denounced it as repressive and said that no bill at all would be better for immigrants than the one being proposed now.

Mass Murderers Not Welcome at our University! Former Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas' visit protested

Aotearoa, 29.05.2007 08:09

Last Saturday demonstrators picketed the ASEAN at Forty conference, while it was being addressed by former Indonesian Foreign Minister, Ali Alatas, at the University of Auckland. Alatas was the Foreign Minister for the brutal US backed Suharto dictatorship. He was the regime's key apologist for the genocidal occupation of East Timor, which killed one third of the tiny nation's population. Protesters considered it rather strange that he had been invited to a university when he was from a regime that killed masses of students in Indonesia, East Timor and West Papua. At a dinner two nights earlier Prime Minister Helen Clark described Alatas as "one of Asia's most respected statesmen, and a good friend of New Zealands for many years." New Zealand, like most other Western capitalist nations, was a huge supporter of the murderous Suharto dictatorship. More
