G8 Camps open their doors to protesters

Germany, 01.06.2007 11:09

The three G8 camps (Rostock, Reddelich and Wichmannsdorf) officially opened on 31 May as thousands of people are pouring into the region around Rostock and Heiligendamm for the anti-G8 week of action. In addition, the main Convergence Centre in Rostock has been serving as a 'welcome point' and a hub for activities and preparations.

On May 29th, a caravan carrying equipment to set up the Wichmannsdorf camp was stopped-and-searched by police for several hours [report and pics | video].

Stop a Wal-Mart Supercenter and its Super Traffic Before it Comes to Town!

Portland, 01.06.2007 01:39

The City of Tigard is in desperate need of your opinion. The city is revising it's comprehensive plan - the blueprint for all future development in Tigard. The next step in the Comprehensive Plan process is to receive input and direction from Tigard's citizens.
Policy Interest Teams are now being organized through the City of Tigard, where Tigard residents will help create goals, policies and action measures to drive the Tigard 2027 Plan.

We're asking all interested parties to join teams to help raise the issue of traffic and discuss potential land use changes that will alleviate congestion. The current opportunity requires just a two month commitment.

To join a Policy Interest Team call Darren Wyss at or email him at  darren@tigard-or.gov.

The Battle for Ethnic Studies at UC Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, CA, 01.06.2007 01:10

Ethnic Studies Committee writes: On May 3rd, the Ethnic Studies Committee planned an informational meeting to inform the community about the battle for Ethnic Studies at UCSC and the state of the movement today. The program included a timeline of our struggle accompanied by 5 testimonials (given by a UCSC professor, graduate student and 3 undergraduate students) and a guest motivational speaker along with a short clip of the TWANAS hunger strike in 1981 (in support of Ethnic Studies).

However, the program was unintentionally altered; intruded upon when Oakes Provost, Pedro Castillo, took it upon himself to barge in and take for himself the power to say what he felt. As a coordinator walked up to the stage to introduce the next speaker, Pedro Castillo followed her and insisted that he be heard. After invading this space, he was still treated with respect. He went on to relay his satisfaction at seeing such an event, and applauded the students that had come. Then, he started expressing his feelings about Ethnic Studies at UCSC, which completely contradicted his general rhetoric and the overall purpose of the event. He went on to scorn students, questioning their involvement by naming specific ethnic-based classes he had taught at UCSC and asking who had taken them. Read More

Refugees In Need Of Community Protection?

United Kingdom, 31.05.2007 13:09

No Borders Nottingham held up its end of a National Day of Action for Refugees with a stall in the Market Square accompanied by the No Borders banner, today sharing the Square with the Farmers’ Market and a City Council awareness day for Fostering of children. For No Borders, it was a good opportunity to have conversations with passersby about the dire situation facing asylum seekers living in Nottingham and Notts, many who have been made destitute because of Home Office decisions to withdraw housing and money for food, or that their countries are safe to return to in spite of their experiences of torture and severe repression, or other fears of returning such as deaths of members of their family and friends.

Leaflets were handed out answering questions people might have about asylum seekrs, and showing what groups like No Borders, Nottingham & Notts Refugee Forum (including Campaign and Food groups), Refugee Action and others are doing to improve this situation in spite of the difficulties. However, in what is no doubt becoming a tiresome story for some on Notts Indymedia, little more than 10 minutes after setting up stall we were approached to ‘move on’ by Community Protection Officers (numbered NW9963 and NW9944).

SOS desde la Federación Estatal de Asociaciones de Inmigrantes y Refugiados en España Delegación en Fuerteventura

Canarias, 31.05.2007 11:09

S.O.S.

Police Brutality Film Screening and Community Discussion

San Diego, 31.05.2007 10:08

Over seventeen people have been murdered by cops in san diego county during the past two years (1 | 2). Cops in san diego facilitate, protect and partner with violent fascists who harass, threaten and assault immigrants, day laborers and human rights activists (1 | 2 | 3) and the hunt for migrants at the border causes hundreds of needless deaths annually (1 | 2). Countless people who aren't carrying shopping bags, who don't live or work in the right neighborhoods, who don't have the right skin color, religious practices, clothing, haircut or gender expression, who don't speak the right language, or who don't show the proper deference towards authority figures are profiled, hassled, detained, beaten, arrested, pepper-sprayed, tasered or shot. Homeless people, often those in need of medical attention, are mistreated and arrested (1 | 2 | 3). Cops approach these people as subhumans undeserving of humane treatment (for example: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4).

The Portland, Oregon region has experienced a similar epidemic of police brutality, which has been extensively documented by Portland Indymedia. On Sept 6, 2005 Fouad Kaady was in a serious car accident outside of Portland, and was sitting by the side of the road naked, burned, bloody and in a catatonic state. Two cops arrived and, instead of providing medical aid, tasered, shot and killed him in less than 28 seconds. The corporate media immediately tried to smear Kaady and the DA ruled the shooting justified. Portland Indymedia obtained the taped interviews of the cops and filmmaker Cat used the cops' own words to reconstruct the murder, resulting in "28 Seconds: The Killing of Fouad Kaady."

Please join San Diego Indymedia and the Sagon Penn Chapter of Copwatch for a film screening and community discussion about police brutality in san diego and the role independent media can play in combating it.

Doors open 7.30pm, film starts at 8pm. £3/4 though nobody turned away for lack of funds. This months film night takes a look at supermarkets and asks, "what is the true cost of low price?" The event features a speaker from the BOGOFs campaign (A locally focused campaign group run by local residents/volunteer to say 'No!' to the proposal of yet another supermarket owned outlet on Gloucester Road) and an activist who was using peaceful direct action to oppose the building of a Tesco in Shepton Mallet. The feature documentary show is 'Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price'. Wal-Mart (owners of Asda) comes under director Robert Greenwald's focus as he dives into the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families and communities struggling to fight a goliath. A working mother is forced to turn to public assistance to provide healthcare for her two small children. A Missouri family loses its business after Wal-Mart is given over $2 million to open its doors down the road. A mayor struggles to equip his first responders after Wal-Mart pulls out and relocates just outside the city limits. A community in California unites, takes on the giant, and wins!
