Protesters Demand Feinstein Oppose Immigration Bill

San Francisco Bay Area, 09.06.2007 19:09

On Saturday, June 2nd, immigrant rights activists gathered in front of Dianne Feinstein's home in San Francisco to demand that she help to bury the current immigration bill. Feinstein came out to talk to the protesters. Activists told her that among other things, the bill will separate families, further criminalize immigrant communities, cause more suffering and deaths at the border, institutionalize worker exploitation through a guest-worker program, and provide no realistic chances for the undocumented to legalize.

Pedalpalooza: multiple donut debauchery!

Portland, 09.06.2007 18:39

Yesterday was the kickoff to two weeks of nonstop mad bicycle love.

It all started with a "parade" leaving from Jamison Square at 7pm. A great location for staging too, what with the Farmer's Market across from the southeast corner of the square (complete with petting zoo and miniature pony rides for the kids!).

I meandered about the grassy area east of the fountain taking in the dazzling array of bike creativity on display: Unicycles, trikes, tall bikes, and highly unusual spaceage, imported German Human Powered Vehicles! ( http://www.greenash.net.au/images/go-one-velomobile). And most of them decorated in innumerable ways: a triple decker tall bike with "wings" intended to look like an old biplane, the rider complete with aviator goggles; a "chariot" a la ancient Rome; numerous "xtracycles", one with a mobile soap bubble generator (the kids loved it!), and on and on.

G8: Report from Germany #7

Portland, 09.06.2007 18:39

If they deny us information about our culture, our people and our revolution they deny us something to extract hope from. The corporate media is the corporate media and they will NEVER give us that satisfaction, nor will they ever give us a revolution to `join´. So, please, do not complain or gripe about their lack of coverage. The corporate media is the systems most powerful weapon and they use it well.

On that note: Germany is full of things which should give you all something to hope for. I am currently in a GIANT squat, having been taken in by a total stranger. I am surrounded by anarchists. In my conversations here I have learned that there has never been a black block like the one seen on the 2nd of June in Rostock. I was part of something unprecedented here, something I do not think I have even dreamed of. A few blocks away from is a park that used to be the wall between East and West Germany. After the collapse of the East 200 houses were taken over. While the government is systematically trying to crush all of them, the ones that survive are thriving centers of revolution. They are living examples of the world we wish to build. The `left scene´ here is not something always hoping to finally do something, it is something. It IS a new world. And it is fighting a WAR against the state.

Press Release: Portland Stop La Parota Dam Action at Sears

Portland, 09.06.2007 18:39

On Friday, Stop La Parota PDX launched its campaign to pressure companies with ties to the financing of La Parota Dam to sever all connections to the destructive project.

Activists held a colorful demonstration in front of the Lloyd Center Sears to demand the Sears Holding Corporation cut all ties to Grupo Carso. Grupo Carso is the financial umbrella of Mexican billionaire, Carlos Slim Helú, who has publicly declared that Grupo Carso subsidiaries will be involved in every aspect of La Parota.

La Parota, a 765-megawatt hydroelectric dam slated for the Papagayo River in Guerrero, Mexico, is a classic infrastructure expansion project resulting from trade agreements like NAFTA and the FTAA in the worst of ways. The dam would submerge 43,000 acres of forest and farmland along the river's banks, displacing at least 25,000 mostly indigenous campesinos (subsistence farmers) from the Communal Lands of Cacahuatepec. Already, indigenous resistance to the dam has been met with imprisonment and murder.

Remembering the USS Liberty: Four Decades Later

DC, 09.06.2007 18:10

On June 8, 1967, the Israelis attacked the USS Liberty killing 34 Americans. They insist it was an “accident.” Lt. James M. Ennes, Jr., a Liberty veteran and an author, said it was “deliberate.” A book, “Operation Cyanide,” claims the attack was a set up to blame the Egyptians and bring the U.S. into the 1967 Six Day War on the side of Israel. Will the U.S. Congress do the Liberty justice? Lt. Ennes doubts it, but he adds: “We can’t stop asking for it.”

The Beach Gestapo, or, The Gentrification of the Water

NYC, 09.06.2007 18:08

I've loved this ever since I was a little girl in Michigan, swimming in the great, fresh-water lakes that surround the state. And it's the same here in New York, the same beautiful sand, water, waves, and wind. As an adult I swim in the salt-water of the Atlantic.

But one thing I and other New Yorkers could do without are the obsessive and harassing park personnel and policies, otherwise known as the Beach Gestapo.

Prolific and seemingly unshakable, journalist John Pilger has spent the better part of a 49-year-long career—52 documentaries and six books—digging his teeth into the world’s troubled powers, muckraking his way through wars in Vietnam, Cambodia, Egypt, the Middle East and elsewhere, all the while chronicling the “secret history, which is often very shameful."

Administrators Back Off from 3 Year Suspension of Prominent Activist

Santa Cruz, CA, 09.06.2007 07:39

On Wednesday, May 30, black student activist Alette Kendrick and the administration of the University of California, Santa Cruz reached a landmark deal ensuring Alette's future at the school. While the administration had previously announced their intention to suspend Alette for 3 years, she will now only be suspended for the Summer and Fall Quarters - returning to UCSC next Winter. Acting Vice Chancellor, Jean Marie Scott signed off on the deal Friday, June 1.

The day before, the University was notified of Alette's intention to file a writ directed at the university for denying her legal representation within a closed-door formal hearing process. While administrators had stalled for months, a lawyer from the University of California responded immediately, hammering out the deal by dinnertime Wednesday. Read More

DePaul Denies Norman Finkelstein Tenure

Chicago, 09.06.2007 04:10

After a months-long tenure fight, DePaul University has denied tenure to DePaul assistant professor of political science Norman Finkelstein. The announcement was made in a four-page letter written by DePaul president Dennis Holtschneider on June 8, 2007.

Finkelstein, a longtime critic of Israeli policies in occupied Palestine and the author of five books, faced a heated tenure review effort when "the University [came] under sustained pressure from pro-Israel groups who have slandered Finkelstein because of his criticism". DePaul student organizers are meeting to decide on a course of action, and report that an appeal to the DePaul faculty council is possible. Read more

While the WSF has come under heavy criticism over recent years, due in part to the increasingly dominant role that the political parties and large multinational NGOs play in the shaping and framing of the event, the USSF got off to an encouraging start when it was announced last year that it would take place in the southern state of Georgia, and that Project South would be one of the groups initially bottom-lining the organizing.

The Greening of the Peace Movement

Boston, 08.06.2007 18:08

In a searing article in Harper's Magazine in September 2004, Naomi Klein laid out a theory of the Iraq War that shreds even today's conventional wisdom about the motivations for our invasion. Her theory was that the neocons saw Iraq as a potential test tube for their ideological utopia, and pursued a strategy of shock therapy, where the devastation of war would force Iraqis to rebuild their nation from scratch. Out of desperation (not to mention shock and awe), they would be receptive to U.S. economic policy unimaginable in any other country. The common refrain that Bush did not have a postwar plan is inaccurate. According to Klein, the neocons' plan started to backfire once the companies they were counting on to privatize the country hesitated to jump on board, and not for the reason you think. Yes, the security situation wasn't perfect. But more importantly, companies decided to wait for the creation of an Iraqi government because international law prohibited the United States as an occupying force from running the show.

FOTOS 1, 2.

Memorial for UCSD Martyr - Vietnam War Protester

San Diego, 07.06.2007 22:38

TONIGHT, Thursday June 7 from 8pm – 2am by Revelle Fountain, we are having a memorial service for George Winne Jr. He burned himself on Revelle plaza in 1970 in protest of the Vietname war. This event was significant in shaping the future design of this campus to control mass congregations. It will be a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the martyr and a reflection upon the ridiculous war we are having today. Please help us spread the word and hope to see you tonight.

George Winne Jr. (1947 – May 11, 1970) is remembered as a protester of the Vietnam War who set himself on fire in a deliberate act of self-immolation in Revelle Plaza on the campus of the University of California, San Diego on May 10, 1970 to protest the United States involvement in the war. The 23 year old student, a former member of a ROTC unit, had no previous affiliation with any organized protests. Winne had recently completed his studies towards a degree in History in March, and would have graduated in June.
He died ten hours later, asking his mother to write a letter to President Nixon. His last words were "I believe in God and the hereafter and I will see you there."
A small memorial to the student is located in a grove of trees, east of the campus library. After being buried, he was given the ensign "Most Beloved"
