After almost six years of persecution, Dr. Mollie Fry and her husband, Attorney Dale Schafer will have a chance to defend themselves in court. The trial will begin on August 1st at 8:30am in the Federal Courthouse, 501 I St. in Sacramento before Judge Damrell. A rally in support of the couple is planned for August 1st at 8am, outside of the courthouse. The trial will continue from Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30am to 3:30pm and on Mondays from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. While they await trial, Fry and Schafer have been forbidden from using cannabis, although it has been recommended by their physicians.
Newspapers across the country are in decline. Reporters are being sacked, buildings sold, and operations consolidated. It's all the fault of the Internet. Print journalism - financed by ad revenue and classifieds - can't compete with free websites like Craigslist and have seen a huge decline in their profits. Publishers are being forced to make "very difficult" decisions, firing significant numbers of staff in order to make ends meet. It was inevitable that this crisis would reach Santa Cruz, and the layoffs at the Sentinel are just part of this general decline. At least, that's what corporate media executives want you to think.

This special 5 minute music-video shares some special heartfelt sentiment and real widom from 91 year old Julius Margolin and his younger side-kick George Mann who sing a great song "I don't want to be a soldier" - and the song is played over the video of the thoughtful travelling exhibit called EYES WIDE OPEN which observes Oregon's Fallen Soldiers and ALL who have lost lives in the Iraq war.
Last weekend I attended the an Action Coast hosted by the newly formed Stumptown Earth First in the forest near Mt. Hood. The action camp took place from Thursday until Monday with a nearly 20 people in attendence through out the weekend. Trainings were given on climbing, knots, workshops covered wilderness first aid and medics, forest defense, Earth First history, Plant walks, and organizing meathods.
Besides the valuable skills and workshops the most exciting part of the camp came in the convergence of older EF'rs and a younger generation of forest defenders. The action camp brought old timers out of the woodwork and glimers of excitement to their eyes. The connection and transfer of experience and knowledge proved to be (for me) the most important part of the weekend and something that is desperately needed with all groups and aspects of a resistance movement.
The energy of young EF'rs combined with the excitement of an old generation displayed at the Stumptown Earth First Action camp appears to be a revitalizatin of direct action forest defense in Cascadia. As Stumptown Earth First grows it is bound to combine older experience coming back to the movement with new energy starting campaigns and getting stuff done. Keep your eyes out for future campaigns of Stumptown Earth First.
Washington, DC — A federal judge will hold a hearing on August 1 at 10:00 A.M. to consider final approval of a $1 million “offer of judgment” by the District of Columbia to end a class action lawsuit by more than 100 peaceful demonstrators who were unlawfully trapped and arrested by DC police on September 27, 2002. The District’s offer also includes expungement of their arrest records and agreement not to oppose a court order deeming the arrests null and void. Class members and their lawyers will hold a press conference immediately afterwards on the courthouse steps.
Bristol to get a a Strategic Transport Authority, but will it also get congestion charging? Bristol to get a a Strategic Transport Authority for the region, but will it also get congestion charging? Transport for Greater Bristol Alliance writes; Last week, a full meeting of the Bristol City Council voted uanimously to take forward the setting up of a Strategic Transport Authority for the Greater Bristol Region. A referendum on a potential congestion charge for the city was also rejected. The decision was an 'in principle' one but they will be getting an officers briefing on the issue on 7th August and a report will be going to the Council and the West of England Partnership (the transport grouping that covers the four Avon authorities)....Full article + comments.| Strategic Transport Authority for Greater Bristol | http://uk.geocities.com/transportforbristol/news.htm | How that CONgestion cash cow coming soon really works (http://thebristolblogger.wordpress.com) | More Transport News: Worst bus to cut more 'services' | National Express to WOMAD- cripps keep out! | Stop Bristol Airport Expansion and The Independent |Contribute An Article | How To Contribute Articles - A Brief Guide | Add To The Calendar
At noon on June 22, about 100 marchers and over 50 cyclists took to the streets in the 2007 San Diego Dyke March/Ride, traveling from Balboa Park to the Rubber Rose in North Park, the site of an afternoon Dyke Festival.
Marchers and cyclists carried signs reading Dykes, Not Bombs; Girl Kisses are Delicious; This is What A Dyke Looks Like; Pride is Sexy; Dyke Pride; Vagina, Vagina; Just Dyke It; and Free the Newark/Lesbian Seven. Chants, energized by the Radical Fucking Cheerleaders, included: We're Here, We're Queer, We're Fabulous, Don't Fuck With Us; If You're Queer and You Know It And You Really Want To Show It, Clap Your Hands; We Don't Need Your Christian Hate, Separation of Church and State; and What Do We Want? Equal Rights! When Do Want Them? Now! Cyclists provided a safe space for the marchers to take one and sometimes two lanes on the street.
Festival attendees flowed between the cool interior of the Rubber Rose, workshops, a beergarden down the street, the City Heights Free Skool Bike Kitchen Mobile Clinic, and performances by locals MC Flow, Dropjoy, Lauren DeRose, Eileen Myles, Jiggle It! Bitch Burlesque and Addiquit; chillin in the shade with friends; and a giant (painted) vagina.
Applying for public assistance to feed your children in San Diego requires submitting to a search of your home by agents of the County's top prosecutor, District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis.
The ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties filed suit to stop Project 100%, arguing that the District Attorney’s invasions of homes of the poor violate the Fourth Amendment’s guarantee against unreasonable searches. When a district judge ruled that government agents going through an impoverished citizen’s bedroom closets and medicine cabinets looking for evidence does not even amount to a “search,” the ACLU filed an appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.--Read More--
Looking at the Mexican Revolution from a distance, we can see that the overt theme was set in the tone of the poor versus the rich; those who drank pulque and had a sense of community and those who sipped fine wine at the expense of the working-class, with an affinity for privileged isolationism.
Ricardo Flores Magón may have been right all along when he said that: “The dreamer is the designer of tomorrow. The practical man, the sensible, cold head, can laugh at the dreamer; they do not know that he, the dreamer, is the true dynamic force that pushes the world forward. Suppress the dreamer, and the world will deteriorate toward barbarism. Despised, impoverished, the dreamer opens the way for his race, sowing sowing sowing the seeds which will be harvested, not by him, but by the practical men, the sensible cold heads of tomorrow, who will laugh at the sight of another dreamer seeding, seeding, seeding.”
Norwood tenant association organizers are again being threatened with eviction, after a lemonade sit-in protesting a month-long broken elevator. In response, the association is holding a twenty-four hour marathon meeting in the building lobby from Sunday, July 29 at 4p.m. until Monday July 30 at 4p.m., to educate tenants of their rights to organize without fear of intimidation or eviction threats from property owners. Selected Norwood tenants received thirty-day eviction notices from owner's attorney Kevin Kane, demanding that tenants stop "loitering" and refrain from using the lobby for any organizing purposes.
This Sunday, a supporter of eco-defense prisoner Daniel McGowan will run a full marathon - 26 miles and 385 yards - in order to raise funds for Daniel's educational fund.
The fund will assist with payment for Daniel's master's degree, which he will complete while serving a seven-year sentence in federal prison for acts of economic sabotage intended to raise awareness and to stop the destruction of the planet. The runner and those assisting her efforts state, "We believe that Daniel's voice must not silenced by his imprisonment, and that communication and education are vital in the battle against global warming."
As this event draws near, please consider a making a pledge. Every little bit counts! (Pledge details below.)
On Monday July 23rd, four anti-fascists from the Philadelphia, PA area were arrested at what was supposed to be a Ku Klux Klan rally in Center City Philadelphia and charged with a series of trumped up misdemeanors in a situation that - for all practical purposes - was straight up entrapment.
Rumors spread through Philadelphia starting Friday July 20th that the Ku Klux Klan was supposed to show up for an 11AM rally on Monday at Love Park. While anti-fascists were present in the area starting at 10:30AM, no racists showed up for the rally until noon when two men wearing what appeared to be neo-Nazi t-shirts showed up in the area. Anti-fascists approached the men, confirmed they were neo-Nazis and told them to leave. Words were exchanged between the Klansmen and the anti-fascists, and then the neo-Nazis said they were leaving. The anti-fascists then followed behind them to make sure that they kept their promise.
Strangely, Civil Affairs cops remained on the other side of the park the entire time and made no efforts to follow the group even when they were out of their sight. The boneheads got into an SUV around the corner and were driven away. As they attempted to drive off, conveniently blocked by traffic, a verbal confrontation ensued with the anti-fascists lasting several minutes before a window of the SUV was smashed. The driver - who could have flashed his badge at anytime to disperse the crowd - then ordered four of the anti-fascists up against the wall.
