Solidarity for Non-Cooperating Political Prisoners

Portland, 20.08.2007 14:38

As the "anti-terror" furor claimed its predictable victims this year, we watched almost helplessly as scores of our comrades were dragged off the streets, out of their houses, and away from their families. All for the crime of caring enough about the planet to get up off their asses and DO something to slow the spinning destruction. Now, it's time to shake off the helplessness and do what we do best: Stand by each other in solidarity and reawaken the passions that will save this earth from our own kind, if anything will.

It bears repeating: Not one of the so-branded "terrorists" rounded up in the greenscare has ever done anything to hurt anyone. All of them went to great lengths to carefully, consciously, intentionally avoid any harm to any living beings with any of their actions. It's more than most people can claim. It's certainly more than can be claimed by their accusors, who make a living by plundering the earth to such an extent that it is rapidly becoming uninhabitable by many life forms that used to call this world home.

Yet these eco-saviors were rounded up and branded with the T word, were threatened with life behind bars, were told they might never see their families or the light of day again for what they had done. (And what, really, had they done? They did what the rest of us should have been doing all along. They stood up and they ACTED. They did what their hearts demanded. They did what was right. They fought against overwhelming odds to stop the destruction that is looming all around us, and they acheived a victory that cannot be overstated. They turned the eyes of the world onto what is being done to this planet in the name of private profit, and the impact has changed the course of public debate, as well as private choices for many of us, for a decade.) So I am grateful to ALL of the greenscare prisoners for what they have done. Not to mention all of the eco-warriors who have never been caught, whomever and wherever they may be.

'Noble Resolve' begins

Portland, 20.08.2007 14:38

The U.S. military "experiment" known as "Operation Noble Resolve 07-2" begins today in Portland, with command centers in Virginia, Texas, Guam, Korea and two locations in Oregon: Salem and Portland. Despite the assurances of the US Joint Forces command that the exercise is "purely a computer-based simulation of an earthquake scenario in Portland", many people in the area are extremely concerned.

Some have mentioned the possibility of the simulation "going live", as happened with the Vigilant Guardian exercise on September 11, 2001. But even without it "going live", there is the little fact that the US military is NOT the organization commissioned by Congress to respond to disasters, and by doing so, as they did in New Orleans following Katrina, they violate the long-standing tradition of 'posse comitatus', which forbids the military from engaging in domestic policing activities.

Elvira Arellano Arrested by ICE: Reportedly Deported to Tijuana

United States, 20.08.2007 14:37

Elvira Arrellano, an immigrant rights activist who defied a deportation order for more than a year by declaring sanctuary at Chicago's Adalberto United Methodist Church in Humboldt Park, was arrested Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles. Arellano, with her son Saul, has become a national symbol of the destruction of families by federal policy.

Germany, 19.08.2007 13:39

Four German activists have been arrested on suspicion of being members or supporters of an alleged 'terrorist organisation' [lawyers' press release | de]. The German federal police suspect that Militante Gruppe (MG or Militant Group) was behind several arson attacks against police and army vehicles since the group surfaced in 2001 [Federal Prosecution's press release]. The direct actions are said to have included an attack on German federal police vehicles to protest against their involvement in immigration deportations and another in response to the G8 raids earlier this year. If found guilty, the four could face up to 10 years in prison. Another three men have been accused but not arrested.

A number of solidarity actions have already taken place, including a demo in Berlin last Wednesday (August 1st) and another at the prison where the four are held on Sunday (August 5th). A Germany-wide protest against police repression is planned for September 15th [call], while many solidarity protests and actions are expected throughout the world.

Day 5: Climate Camp Prepares For Mass Action

United Kingdom, 19.08.2007 11:38

Saturday at the Climate Camp is mainly dedicated to a series of meetings and workshops related to the preparations for Sunday and Monday's days of action, but this has not stopped people from continuing with a series of descentralised actions:

15:00 - Children and their parents from around the UK gathered at Heathrow's World Freight Centre to blockade its access road. Around 15 people took part in the blockade which was taken over by others from the Camp For Climate Action after 45 minutes. No one has been arrested so far and police, FIT team as well as BAA security are present at the scene. The blockaders unrolled a banner reading 'Enjoy Local Food' to highlight the effects to climate change that flying food around the world causes. See photo report for more.
11.30 - About 30 campers from the camp brought a banner (and about 20 police!) to a picket of striking cargo workers at the Nippon Express Heathrow depot. The workers are out on strike against changes that would see them working 25% longer hours for no extra pay. Climate campers have been keen to show their support and have visited the picket line throughout the current 48-hour stoppage, which ends at 6am Sunday. Read article and call out for more.
11.00 - A group of around 40 activists from the camp have occupied Carmel Agrexco, the 50 % Israeli state owned exporter/ distributor of Illegal settlement produce from the West Bank. The company's offices were trashed and the action ended with five arrests [Update] See Press Release and end-of-action update for more info.

Emily Hicks on Open Source Software and Borders

San Diego, 19.08.2007 04:38

On July 11, 2005 Emily Hicks, Professor of Chican@ Studies and English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University appeared on Veer Towards Queer on radioActive sanDiego. She talked about the military-industrial-academic complex, the mechanics of the corporate university, open source software, creating community with music, the existence of bisexuality, a proposed open source lab for chicanas, and the ideology of borders and breaking them down.

From the Interview: Emily Hicks
Who is going to be the actor, the subject of history, and I don't think it is a male factory worker anymore. I think immigrants, people without papers, people all over the world who do not have the last name that matches the dominant culture, that matches the passport. Those are the people who are going to be fighting the state for all of us. As anarchists, concerned with overthrowing the state, we can see that whoever is trying to cross the border, whoever doesn't have papers, whatever musician is sitting on the cement embankment three months, trying to get across, can't get across and has no ID, except for a flyer that he had from a gig in Mexico City, an alternative art space.

Those people are not just US-Mexico border people, its not just this border, those people are speaking for, embodying the contradictions of people all over the world, that would be eastern Europe, that would be in any part of the world right now where people are without papers, and their papers were taken from them, and they aren't ever going to get to go back home.

The theoretical term for that is those people are de-territorialized, that is what Deleuze and Guattari call it.... It's now the person who is de-territorialized, speaking with an accent, speaking without rights. And whatever those people are up to, that's our leader, that's who we should be looking to...

Pamela Kincaid died earlier this month under disturbing and suspicious circumstances. This is the story about the events leading to her death.

Kincaid was the lead named plaintiff in the lawsuit filed by the homeless against the City of Fresno, because the city was taking and immediately destroying their property. This sometimes included their IDs, clothing, tools, kittens, and in one case the urn containing the ashes of a grandchild. Pam stood up against this injustice and was willing to put herself on the line to protect the rights of all homeless people in this community.

Rocky to Run for Mayor of San Diego

San Diego, 18.08.2007 22:08

Only participatory democracy will save this planet. Political power from the bottom-up, the inside-out, that is self-governing and makes decisions in unity with our common global needs. Face to face democracy breaks down the pyramids of power which institutionalize unfairness, inequality and privilege. That is what I propose for San Diego.

As a candidate for an office that I can't possibly win, part of a broader coalition, possibly a local justice movement, if nothing else, at least an adventure; I am free to campaign on the issues. To go beyond the media forged parameters of possibility and discussion. To change the political dialogue or, as that great Chicago organizer, Saul Alinsky, once said, "to stink up the place."

I will challenge the fundamental nature of store bought politics. Today's politicians have become squabbling creatures of self-interest. Our mayor is their poster boy. Jerry Sanders...jerry rigging city contracts and peddling influence.....JS....BS. The darling of the corporate media and wealthy developers, he has been called a "crook" by our own elected City Attorney and "silly and uniformed" in a recent City Beat editorial. Like Sanders, most local politicians lack vision and have forgotten how to imagine, prisoners of their own mendacity and greed. They pander to despair and fear, thumping the virtues of selfishness and looking out for number one, reducing collective existence to its most banal aspects.

The clearly agitated creature is reportedly attempting to swat planes out of the sky as some sort of protest against climate chaos....Despite a lot of hot air about tackling climate chaos, the government continues to promote air travel through tax breaks, subsidies and a huge airport expansion programme...In the face of overwhelming public opposition, Bristol International Airport (BIA) is planning to massively expand in the coming years. BIA currently spews out more CO2 than the whole of Bristol’s traffic. By 2019 it’s CO2 emissions are predicted to be around 730000 tonnes, up from 430000 tonnes in 2005....One of the friends of the rogue gorilla had this to say; "The freak weather conditions we are seeing around the world and now closer to home are just the tip of the iceberg. Climate chaos means deadly heat waves, extreme floods, mass homelessness and refugee crises, ecosystem collapse, severe water shortages, resource conflicts and wars, mass extinction… the list goes on. This is no longer a distant threat to be quickly forgotten or dismissed in the rush for cheap flights or the latest consumer item. Unless we take responsible, serious action now to put an absolute cap on CO2 emissions and drastically alter our way of life, this planet will become an uninhabitable nightmare world where human existence itself will be in question. Have a nice day." Full article & Pictures. Stay up-to-date with events at Climate Camp with Indymedia Climate Camp Newswire! All the stories, actions, pictures, video and audio from the grassroots. CONFRONT THE MINUTEMEN, AUGUST 18!

Seattle, 18.08.2007 03:38

According to these scoundrels, they’re not racists, they’re only interested in enforcing the law! We’re just supposed to forget that Jim Crow was once the law, and that U.S. immigration law has always been racist...

Zerfallene Gesellschaft, Revisionismus, Nazis

Germany, 18.08.2007 03:09

Code Pink: Camp Feinstein and Camp Pelosi

Portland, 17.08.2007 21:37

Report from camper/hunger striker: I've spent the last few days sleeping in a sleeping bag in front of one of the most gorgeous homes in San Francisco -- Senator Feinstein's house. It's up a huge flight of stairs, though, and seeing that I haven't been eating anything during that time, it's been a pain in the rear to go anywhere. The first night we had around 16 people stay overnight, but lately that number has dropped to around five. I'd like to see this movement build and if anyone reading this lives close to San Francisco please, show up to Camp Pelosi and at least show your support. We really appreciate it.

Essentially, we want Feinstein to stop funding the illegal occupation in Iraq. I'm also pretty mad at her for voting for the increased powers to wiretap American citizens, but to be fair I am glad she called for the closure of Guantanamo Bay Prison recently.
