Report Back From the 9/11 Freedom From Fear Demonstration

Seattle, 17.09.2007 21:08

On the sixth anniversary of September 11th, approximately three hundred people joined together to protest the Patriot Act and corporate media. The theme of the event was a funeral march. Activists dressed in black and marched in dirge formation to major corporate media centers in Seattle.

At each of the media offices, a letter of grievances was read. The demonstrators demanded an "end to the complicity of the broadcast media in the endless wars for profit that those in power seem determined to sustain" and asked corporate media to "refuse to support the agenda of any political party and just tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."

October 9th: Watada 2nd Court-Martial Scheduled to Begin

Seattle, 17.09.2007 21:08

The second court-martial of Lt. Ehren Watada, a Fort Lewis U.S. Army officer who refused to go to Iraq with his unit over a year ago, is scheduled to begin October 9th.

Watada's trial, originally slated to begin several months ago, was postponed at the request of government and defense lawyers. His first trial ended in a mistrial.

After his first trial, Watada in April acquired new civilian lawyers, James Lobsenz and Kenneth Kagan of Carney Badley Spellman in Seattle. Lobsenz and Kagan argued that the constitutional prohibition against double jeopardy, or being tried twice for the same crimes, prevents him from being court-martialed again. The lawyers are appealing to the Army Court of Criminal Appeals.

Gatwick No Border Camp 2007 Getting Closer

United Kingdom, 17.09.2007 19:37

As the government started to build a new immigration prison (Brook House at Gatwick Airport, near Crawley), the No Border Camp is getting closer: Sept 19-24. Among the various actions announced, Saturday, the 22nd, will see a demonstration from Crawley to Tinsley House, the already existing immigration prison at Gatwick, next to the planned site of the new centre. There will be workshops both at the camp and at Goldsmith University the week before, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Lewisham.

Days after the Home Office told refugees "We'll do everything we can to send you home", 26 migrant prisoners escaped from Campsfield, Oxfordshire, following days of protests. The riot was the latest episode in the migrants struggle inside detention after the Harmondsworth riots last November.

Relentless protests, both inside adn outside detention, have managed to put many detention and deportation profiteers on the map. On 17 August, activists occupied the office of XL Airways in Crawley to protest against the charter airline's role in forecul deportations on behalf of the Home Office. Several demonstrations have been announced for August 28th to protest against a planned charter flight to deport a number of rejected asylum seekers to DR Congo.

It was small but perfectly formed, with good leaflets (thanks to Rossport Solidarity posse) and banners (thanks to clever trevor). Several drivers changed their minds and went elsewhere for their petrol when they saw us or spoke to us about what is going on in Rossport at Shell's behest. We handed out leaflets at the zebra crossing, where bored and exasperated drivers were trapped in their little metal boxes carping, honking and scratching at each other like battery chickens. It gave them something to read in the extensive traffic jam that sat next to the garage. DC, 16.09.2007 05:09

@189 protestors were individually arrested while stepping onto and then standing on wall surrounding the Capitol steps, during a "die-in" protesting continuation of Iraq War. Many members of Iraq Veterans Against the War contingent were arrested, including family members and mothers of vets and active duty, and Vietnam vets. As of 4pm, the Capitol police tried to stop arresting anyone. Someone in charge yelled that the protestors had made their point, and the police at the wall started to push back anyone trying to get arrested, and sprayed chemicals from a small red cannister, on 2 who tried and finally succeeded in getting arrested. Capitol Police told the NYTimes that arrestees will be charged with "illegally crossing a police line." Earlier, a single line on Penn Ave of "Gathering of Eagles" and Young Republicans, a majority of whom never served in Iraq, yelled "traitor" at the Iraq Veterans Against the War contingent, heading the antiwar march of thousands. The Iraqs vets were chanting, "We are the troops! Bring us Home!," while marching with flags printed with the names of big war contractors, Bechtel, Lockheed Martin, Blackwater, CACI.

DSEi - Tuesday 11th: Actions Against The Arms Fair

United Kingdom, 15.09.2007 20:08

The security cordon around DSEi, the "fastest-growing defence show in the world." was breached shortly after 7.30am this morning, when a group of about 20 activists ran into the car park of the ExCeL Centre in London's docklands, where the exhibition opened today. A solidarity blockade of BAE took place in Manchester. About 80 people joined a CAAT march and rally, and about 50 cyclists arrived at Custom House DLR station from a critical mass style ride that left Bank tube station mid-morning. Space Hijackers managed to get a tank and sound system to the main entrance of ExCeL, after diverting the police with a decoy tank. They auctioned off the tank and invited the 200 strong crowd to a party against the arms fair so to let the fair's delegates know what they think about their murderous business.

DSEi - Thursday 13th: Protests At The Gala Dinner

United Kingdom, 15.09.2007 20:08

The week of actions against the DSEI arms fair continued on Thursday night. The most powerful weapons buyers and sellers gathered at the Dorchester Hotel in London's Park Lane for a luxury dinner with arms deals on the side. The DSEi/DMA dinner is an important part of the DSEi week, both for networking within the arms industry and as an opportunity to make agreements for weapons sales, perhaps over a glass of blood-red wine.

A protest outside the hotel was called, and a Bikes Not Bombs Critical Mass gathered at the South Bank to move towards Park Lane. Earlier in the day the Princess of Wales fountain was dyed blood red to remember victims of cluster bombs, whilst police activity continued in Rampart Street where several people were searched and one arrested in relation to the DSEi protests.

FOSBR are celebrating! Why? Read on... FOSBR are celebrating! Why? Read on... Apologies, but X! writes: FOSBR are celebrating! Despite the failure of FGW to be able to provide crews and trains for a 40 minute weekday frequency from December 2007, even though the money has been budgeted by Bristol City Council, we at FOSBR have SUCCESS! Apparently, come next summer, it's all change on the Severn Beach Line, when train operator FGW have announced that not only will they provide an increased frequency as promised (and subsidised) by our elected Councillors, astonishingly, we will be able to travel on a Sunday! A Sunday!! Yes, an hourly service on an ex Dr Beeching branch line ON A SUNDAY. This is truly a FIRST! (Excuse the pun). It hasn't happened in any other city. Let's take a little while here to consider this astonishing development, because the lack of a Sunday service is a complete misnomer in the history of our "Beach Line". 50 years ago, when the Sunday service was withdrawn, Sunday was a very different day. We used to sit in on a wet afternoon, attend church three times a day and wonder what it was for. Now, we go shopping, visit friends, we go out and enjoy. It's finally been realised ... Sept 13 Court Update: Rod Coronado Trial

Portland, 15.09.2007 08:08

Kelly Stewart, Sheriff Dep't. undercover cop still on stand. Prosecutor Parmley brings up that there is new evidence?this is the audio that the defense uncovered, of the *question* in question, and subsequent answer. (Background: it is an audio recording whose existence was apparently heretofore unknown. Likely a small recorder in someone's pocket.)

Prosecution gets Stewart to establish that the government did (and she participated in) investigations and questioning of people, including Grand Juries and search warrants to locate additional recordings, but this recording had not come to light (or sound). It is poor quality, but comprehensible. The government made a transcript. Once established that the tape exists, it is played in court.

The words: "Can you really explain to us, how to, at some point, how to assemble an incendiary device?" And then Rod's rather long answer discussing two kinds of such devices, and the demonstration using the apple juice jug. (Partial: incendiary devices are devices that do not explode, but consist of a timer, 2 wires....(much more) when 2 wires connect, it completes electrical circuit...filament...windproof matches, can of fuel, etc. He says "More popular today, however", and then discusses jug method using the Martinelli's half gallon jug from the potluck that evening and a cassette tape as props and discusses using lamp oil, sponge, stick incense.)

Washington's First Medical Student in Cuba, Week 1

Seattle, 15.09.2007 05:38

Ramon Alejandro Bernal was born in 1982 in Jalisco, Mexico and came to Seattle with his parents in 1993. He attended Denny Middle School and West Seattle High School. The first one in his family to complete high school, Ramon finished a Pre Med course at Seattle University while working at a Rainier Valley grocery. However, medical school seemed financially impossible.

Through the internet, Ramon learned about the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Havana, Cuba, where thousands of young people from around the world receive a completely free medical education. Part of the agreement with ELAM is that, after graduation, students return to their homelands to provide medical care to their underserved communities. He applied through the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization that recruits for ELAM in the United States. He was accepted by IFCO and then he was offered a position by ELAM.

Ramon left for Havana on August 26th after a send off party at El Centro de la Raza. After been in Cuba a week, he composed a letter about his first impressions.

Desecration, the Conservative Way: How One Woman Exploits Vietnam Dead For Her "Activism"

DC, 14.09.2007 23:39

The last time this lie about someone attempting to vandalize the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial came out, the anti-peace crowd managed to get a few thousand to come out and oppose an anti-war rally sponsored by International ANSWER, and since it worked so well the last time Freak Republic's Mary Beth "tgslTakoma" Caherty is going to give it another shot. Of course, this time she had to up the ante and provide pics of actual vandalism. Now will it bring out the thousands for her side? We shall see, but if one notices, this isn't getting the media play that the original lie had. That might be due to the fact that the National Park Service is discounting the vandalism, leaving all the right-wing activist busybodies to wallow in their own muck. The problem is this, however: Caherty wants to pick fights with progressive activists across the board. She can't forumlate a real arguement, just provide a good spin. She refuses to accept the NPS explaination that her proof of vandalism is actually proof of a cleaning accident, and her fellow right-wing nutjobs are following her lead. In case there is some sort of stupid nonsense going on because a bunch of conservative jackasses can't get over themselves. We figured we alert you to what is going on in the event you see them around and need to set things straight.
