International Day of Solidarity Action for Burmese People: Oct 6

Burma Solidarity Actions

United Kingdom, 03.10.2007 16:08

Around 30 activists blockaded a Total petrol station to protest against the company's heavy involvement with the military junta in Burma which is responsible for the deaths of several protesters in just the last few days.

Total is in a joint venture with the Burmese dictatorship in the Yadana gas project, which earns the regime hundreds of millions of dollars every year. Aung Sun Suu Kyi, the democratically elected leader of the Burmese government under house arrest, says: “Total has become the main supporter of the military regime”.

A mix of students and locals stood, sat or drummed across both entrances to the forecourt for an hour and a half. Holding a banner reading "Totalitarian Oil-Fuelling Oppression in Burma" they leafleted and spoke to passers-by and motorists. Staff at the petrol station threatened protesters with sticks, car and lorry drivers attempted to run over protesters, but despite this things remained peaceful.

Later in the day, students at the University of Bradford passed an emergency motion to mandate the Student Union to support the Burmese monks and investigate alternative suppliers since they currently use Total for fuelling their minibuses.

Thousands Flood Streets of Syracuse Demanding End to Iraq War!

United States, 03.10.2007 14:07

Over 2,500 people marched through the streets of Syracuse, NY on September 29th to call for Immediate Withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Billed as, 'Soldiers and Civilians Speak Out!', members of Iraq Veterans Against the War lead the march.

This march was unique, not only because it was the largest in upstate New York since the Vietnam War, but because it brought soldiers, students, labor and the mainstream city groups together in a way not seen enough in today's antiwar movement. Groups like Military Families Speak Out, Veterans for Peace, the Green Party and SEIU 1199 came together to demand Immediate Withdrawal of US troops, funding for vets when they get back, reparations for the Iraqi people, and funding for healthcare. HOPE Sues CDFA to Halt Aerial Spraying of Pesticide on Peninsula Cities

Santa Cruz, CA, 03.10.2007 03:38

Helping Our Peninsula's Environment (HOPE), an organization dedicated to protecting the natural environment, sued the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) because they violated California's Environmental Quality Act. CDFA refused to prepare an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) claiming they are exempt because it is an emergency. CDFA plans to aerially re-spray the Monterey Peninsula with Suterra's Checkmate pesticide (a moth pheromone) starting October 9th.

Bristolians from Espacio Bristol-Colombia report first-hand on BP’s devastating impact Bristolians from Espacio Bristol-Colombia report first-hand on BP’s devastating impact The first report from Bristolians Guayasa and Guayabo, who are currently in Colombia for a year providing international accompaniment (i.e. being a sort of human shield) and researching the impact of BP with local activists. This week, we released the report from last month’s solidarity mission to the oil-rich region of Casanare, where BP operates and where the Colombian army and paramilitaries continue to kill peasant farmers - either as a consequence of their protests against BP’s devastating social and ecological impact or, it would appear, simply because they are surplus to the requirements of the oil industry. Burma Solidarity Actions

United Kingdom, 02.10.2007 18:08

The military in Burma (Myanmar) has been unleashing its troops on unarmed demonstrators in a bid to stamp out mounting protests against the junta’s stifling rule, and price rises that have made life for broad layers of working people unbearable. The country's military junta continues to escalate its attacks against the area's ethnic minorities. The All Burma Monks Alliance, supported by the National League for Democracy and the Burmese people in general, have vowed to continue protests.

There are ongoing daily protests outside the Burmese and Chinese embassies in London, where 200 or so protesters rallied on September 27th. Meanwhile a Total petrol station, the largest supporter of the Burmese military regime, was blockaded in Bradford for over an hour. Students there also mandated their Students Union to investigate alternative suppliers after learning the union has an account with Total. The oil company's HQ has also been targeted with a die-in on October 2nd.

There have also been calls to petition the UK government to boycott the Chinese Olympics due to China's support of the military regime in Burma, a call to wear red shirts in solidarity.

On September 30th, an emergency national demonstration took place with around a thousand people gathering in Trafalgar Square before marching down Whitehall and on to the Buddhist pagoda in Battersea Park. In Sheffield the Karen community protested on Monday 1st October.

Ongoing protests in solidarity are expected to continue, both in the UK and around the world. See The Irrawaddy and the Democratic Voice of Burma for ongoing independent coverage of what's happening in Burma, however Burma's generals appeared to have cut public internet access today to prevent more videos, photographs and information about their violent crackdown getting out.

While the repression of protests in Burma are condemned by the UK government a protest against the Iraq war that has killed 1.2 million called for the 8th October is banned.

Where Do We Go From Here?

United Kingdom, 02.10.2007 16:09

Notts Indymedia has been going for over 2 years now and has grown into one of the most successful Indymedia collectives in the UK. We have an ever expanding dedicated group of contributors and many readers. The site has become an important resource which informs and inspires ourselves, our friends and others who care about injustice and wanting to create a better place for all. The site is now even listed by the BBC as an alternative local news source... The Demo Project helped us financially with a benefit night (see photos [1] and [2]) which enabled us to pay for priniting costs for leaflets as well as for a couple of us to attend an alternative media conference in Brighton last May (read announcement and listen to audio). We were also able to get ourselves a digital audio device, and have started building up a substantial audio archive.

There are various ideas about where the project should/can go from here. Website redesign, streaming online radioshow, producing (bi)montly printout, it is all possible. So where do we go from here? Are you able to commit some time for media creation? Help out with publicity? Able to donate some money? We are getting together for a meeting on Monday 8th October at 7.30pm at the Sumac Centre, Forest Fields, Nottingham. Everyone is welcome and we'd love to see you there.

Son of Aspiring Theocrat Attempting Power Grab via Loudoun County Sheriff's Office: Highlights of Sept 25 Campaign Debate

DC, 02.10.2007 15:09

FROM OUR "ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMMING" DEPARTMENT: "I Shot The Sheriff (But I Did Not Shoot The Moderator)" Streaming out of YouTube, 09min 20secs. Don't feel like sitting through another Antiwar Cargo Cult Ritual report? Well, why not take a litle ride outside the Beltway, to last week's League Of Women Voters' debate in Leesburg, Virginia between Sheriff Steve Simpson (incumbent Loudoun County Sheriff, running as an Independent), Michael George (Democrat) and Greg Ahlemann (Republican), son of Pastor Jay Ahlemann of the Church Of The Valley in Lovettsville, Virginia. Backed by the infamous Dr. James Dobson of "Focus On The Family" fame, Pastor Ahlemann called on his congregation to oppose a proposed "hate speech" bill in Congress, taking out a full-page, full-color gay-baiting ad in "Leesburg Today" in June of this year. Meanwhile, his son, former Loudoun Sheriff's Deputy Greg Ahlemann, is campaigning on a virulent anti-immigrant platform which includes the introduction of the ICE program of mass arrests, separation of families, and detention camps into Virginia. Listen and marvel as Young Ahlemann repeatedly drags the discussion back to immigration, accuses ESL students of being "illegals" and gang members, and wears his "faith in Jesus Christ" and his "relationship with God" like a chip on his shoulder…

Demonstrators demand UN Action on Burma, Condemn China

NYC, 02.10.2007 12:08

In response to the recent military crackdown in Burma, around a hundred people rallied outside of the United Nations, chanting “Free, Free Burma” and “UN Security Council Take Action Now”. The initial protest of two hundred people started at 12 PM in front of the Burmese Mission to the UN, and was then moved to right outside the United Nations on 47th and 1st Avenue. The latter part of the protest lasted till about 6 PM. Given that the protest was for the whole day, snacks and water were on hand for the demonstrators. A lot of people dressed in red, showing solidarity for the Burmese monks who are being violently repressed for protesting the rise in Burmese fuel prices. The majority of the crowd was filled with Burmese exiles and exiled Burmese monks, as well as students and activists.

Anti-semetic Graffiti on Alberta

Portland, 01.10.2007 14:38

Here i was, enjoying a ride down Alberta, looking forward to my burrito on a fall Saturday afternoon, when low and behold, i zoom past not one, not two, but THREE horrific throw-ups of anti-jew graffiti. the first was on Francis's (the newest restaurant to hit Alberta on 24th) where someone in their infinite Nazi artistry had written "JEWS!!!" in red spray paint, above one of their signs on Francis's windows. The next was on the abandoned beauty school a few blocks up where the same jag had written "JEWDYKE," and lastly a few more blocks up, there was a star of david painted on one (of the gazillion) botique's windows.

I was appalled. First, they plan on having an f-n' party in PDX next weekend, THEN they bomb Alberta with hate speech and THE WORST PART is people were walking by AS IF IT WAS JUST ANOTHER INCIDENT OF A WRITER MARKING A SPACE!!!! don't you all see what's happening? what this incident represents? i know there aren't a whole lot of us Heebs in portland, but geez, can't the connection be made to pre-war Nazi Germany? This is the same sh-t the government (and it's supporters) would write on Jewish-owned businesses write before they stared creating the ghettoes. AND IT WASN'T EVEN POTED ON INDYMEDIA!!!!!!! until now.

what are we going to do about this as a community? Doesn't anyone else remember the swastikas on the murals a couple of months ago? I'm hoping someone responds to this, because i don't think i can live in a portland where such blatant displays of Nazism go unchecked.
