Our Collective History at 7 corners and the red and black cafe

Portland, 24.10.2007 22:38

i may be accused of being nostalgic, but how can anyone not feel something as the red and black and other tenants are forced to move away from the 7 corners area, whose sense of place they helped to create? by sharing these thoughts i seek to strengthen my understanding, and stimulate discussion toward a bigger picture of our collective memory.

it's precisely because it is a common story of power, land ownership, the displacement of people and the disruption of the places they gather, that this story needs to be reflected upon. sure, the handwriting of gentrification was always on the wall at 7 corners, and the promises of a community minded landlord were accepted on a basis of minimal trust, but what a drag it is ultimately to be forced to move when it was your own action, creativity, and insight which helped to create the conditions for greedy landowners to exploit!

Grassroots Solidarity against the Occupation

United Kingdom, 24.10.2007 21:38

A delegation of ten people from Brighton arrived in the Tubas region of occupied Palestine this weekend. The delegation is part of the project by the Brighton-Tubas Friendship and Solidarity Group . The group's aims are to highlight Israeli war crimes against Palestinians in the region, raise awareness about life under occupation and create practical solidarity links between grassroots organisations in Brighton and Tubas region.

The Jordan Valley, part of which is situated in Tubas region, has been de facto annexed by Israel. The Israeli occupation forces using land expropriation, house demolitions, militarisation of vast swathes of land and enforcing a system of pass laws reminscent of apartheid South Africa are attempting to make life impossible for the Palestinians. The aim is to bleed Palestinians out of the valley, leaving those who remain there to provide a workforce to serve the needs of the Israeli agricultural companies who profit from land stolen from the indigenous Palestinian population.

The letter cited numerous sources, including the Military and State Department, stating that waterboarding is, and always has been, a barbaric form of torture.

Vorratsdatenspeicherung ante portas

Germany, 24.10.2007 17:38

Progressive Dissidents Win Teamsters Election In 12-Year Battle Against Corruption

Chicago, 24.10.2007 06:08

Progressive labor activists are hailing the victory of a dissident slate in one of the nation's most closely watched union elections. On Oct. 22, the U.S. Department of Labor announced the winners of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) officers’ election for Local 743 — the 743 New Leadership Slate, a progressive dissident project that defeated the incumbent Ford-Galvan Unity Slate. The rank-and-file victory comes in the wake of a twelve-year battle against entrenched corruption and criminality in the union leadership, including a series of past elections marred by vote fraud, intimidation, graft and the old guard's longstanding ties to the Outfit. Prepare for the Final FCC Media Ownership Hearing in Seattle

Seattle, 23.10.2007 03:08

Consolidation has made the mainstream press less local, less diverse, and less open to new artists and ideas. The upcoming media ownership hearing is our opportunity to tell the FCC that the public interest matters more than corporate greed.

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin plans to hold the last of six official public hearings on media ownership rules in Seattle, before rushing the agency's 18-month long consideration of the rules to a fast-tracked conclusion by mid-December. The hearing will be the only chance for Northwest residents to weigh in on proposals that would allow giant media companies to grow even more concentrated. While Martin has apparently proposed holding a Seattle hearing on Nov. 2--less than two weeks away!--no date has been officially announced.

Reclaim the Media will host a series of workshops providing information on media ownership issues, and to help you and your friends prepare to testify at the upcoming FCC hearing in Seattle.
