$500,000 in Department of Defense Funding to Kansas University for Mapping of Communally Held Indigenous Lands in La Huasteca and Oaxaca, Mexico

$500,000 in Department of Defense funding is being made available to the Department of Geography by the Foreign Military Services Office (FMSO), based out of Fort Leavenworth in Lawrence, Kansas. Geography professors Jerome Dobson and Peter Herlihy explicitly acknowledge the security and intelligence ramifications of their project, the Bowman Expeditions, citing the geo-political and cultural effects of the “neo-liberal property regime.” The home of the FMSO, Fort Leavenworth, was the command center of the western front during US expansionism into native lands in the early 1800s as well as the epicenter of the War Departments “control” over native populations after the civil war. Today, the FMSO focuses on emerging and asymmetric threats to the national security of the United States of America, which is a red flag as to their intentions in funding the Bowman Expeditions. US military intervention in Mexico has seen a steady increase in the last decade, and now is set on a fast track through Plan Mexico, which like Plan Colombia, justifies further military funding for the “war on drugs.” The racist history of colonial rule and territorial occupation continues with a whole new set of conspirators seeking economic gain and academic notoriety. The maps produced by this project are not just of the physical landscape, but rather more intentionally of the cultural resistance to displacement. Through the rhetoric of unbiased science, and geographic exploration, the Bowman expeditions are actively paving in Mexico, the road to hell.

Tukwila Six - Solidarity for Teachers - Student Walkout - Rally

Portland, 29.11.2007 21:38

I was inspired by the sincerity of these students for their teachers and their education, and their extremely complimentary courageous "Walk Out" to say "HELL NO" to this war and to march in public for PEACE..

One point I didn't like hearing was how the "recruiters are there everyday at Foster High School ...walking the halls of that school and befriending these young kids day after day ... in order to keep the blood flowing in Iraq.

As Foster High Administration cranks up the pressure on the "Tukwila Six" It becomes a teachers witch hunt ...to suppress and intimidate, and now as it starts to unravel, the students become active and vocal as they show up at the school board meeting demading justice and speaking out.

NYC, 29.11.2007 13:38

It seemed only fitting that on the day of the “historic” meeting in Annapolis, Maryland between Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas, Norman Finkelstein would set the record straight. Around 300 people were present at Judson Memorial Church right near Washington Square Park, and all the chairs were filled as well as a few hagglers standing up.

City Upon A Shining "Science Hill"

Santa Cruz, CA, 29.11.2007 03:08

Darwin BondGraham writes, "Perhaps the clearest statement of UCSC's horrible transformation is captured by a simple robotic voice, the voice of the Metro bus system's androgynous speaker who automatically announces each stop as it approaches. When the system was first installed it announced only the major stops around town, "Mission and Bay," "Metro Center," "Soquel and Branciforte." I recall riding it one day a few years back up to campus. The voice announced each stop on the way up Laurel Street. When the bus entered campus it went silent. But then the one announcement came, the one stop worth mentioning, (according to UCSC and the city's bus operator that is), "Science Hill, U-C-S-C." I wondered why at the time Science Hill got to be the main stop on campus given its distance from the Quarry Plaza and administrative buildings."

UC Santa Cruz has always called itself the "City On A Hill." Truly it is, at least for 9 months out of the year. But the phrase is worth unpacking, especially given the campus's past, present and future. UCSC adopted the moniker early on, back when it was something of an experimental campus in the UC system, one that would focus on undergraduate education and the liberal arts. Read More

Victims of Transphobic Violence Remembered

United States, 29.11.2007 03:07

Approximately twenty people converged outside of the Keating Federal Building in Downtown Rochester on November 20th to commemorate the 9th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance exists, states the website RememberingOurDead.org, “…to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder—like most anti-transgender murder cases—has yet to be solved.”

Those gathered read aloud the names of 11 murdered individuals—some transgendered, some perceived to be tansgendered: Nakia Ladelle Baker (Nashville, TN), Keittirat Longnawa (Rassada, Thailand), Moira Donaire (Viña del Mar, Chile), Michelle Carrasco “Chela” (Santiago, Chile), Ruby Rodriguez (San Francisco, CA), Erica Keel (Philadelphia, PA), Bret T. Turner (Madison, WI), Unidentified Male Clad in Female Attire (Kingston, Jamaica), Victoria Arellano (San Pedro, CA), Oscar Mosqueda (Daytona Beach, FL), and Maribelle Reyes (Houston, TX). From 1970 to the present there have been 374 reported deaths according to Remembering Our Dead.

“The Road To Hell”

Austin, 28.11.2007 23:39

The greatest threat to the neo-liberal political economy is not terrorism, nor armed insurgency, nor drugs. It has always been and continues to be, grassroots community based organizing for self-sufficiency, self-reliance, self-determination, self-empowerment, and self-defense. In Mexico, as throughout the growing popular movements brewing all over Latin America, this type of organizing can be broken down to just one word: “autogestion”. Autogestion is the greatest threat to neo-liberalism, and the benefits of its global atrocities to the American population. When communities whose role within the neo-liberal political economy is that of a slave, a servant or worse yet, a disposable variable, begin to organize for self-sufficiency, self-reliance, self-determination, self-empowerment, and self-defense, that is the greatest threat to the security of the United States of America. In fact it is the only thing that has ever truly been considered a threat.

Read this if You're in Washington County!

Portland, 28.11.2007 22:38

Most members of the Washington County Board of Commissioners have repeatedly refused to respond to citizens' calls for reductions in global warming pollutants. The Board is ignoring citizen voices, and turning its back on the most important issue of our time.

Only one Washington County commissioner, Dick Schouten, responds to the emails I send him - the others ignore me. Other people I've talked to, also trying to get in touch with the Board, report a similar problem. The message these politicians are sending about themselves is that they do not care what their constituents want or think. Again and again I've asked them to consider passing the US Cool Counties Climate Stabilization Declaration, and commiting to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions - but it's like yelling into a black hole. It's time for these people to be reminded that the opinions of those they are supposed to represent DO matter. If you live in Washington County, please help me wake up the Board by signing an on-line petition asking them to pass the Cool Counties Declaration. We'll keep gathering signatures until they CAN'T ignore this request any longer.

Local "Green" Builder Implicated in Destruction of Rainforests

Portland, 28.11.2007 22:38

Please help Rainforest Relief help fight logging of old-growth, tropical rainforests. Below is an action alert with more information about the use of destructively harvested rainforest woods by a Portland developer, and what you can do about it.
Destructively harvested tropical hardwoods - most likely including llegally logged woods - are being used in the interiors of at least two of Hoyt Street Properties' Pearl District condominium developments that are being marketed for their "green" features. These materials, more scorched earth than green, include the mahogany lobby in The Metropolitan, and the "ebony" cabinets and "mahogany" flooring at The Encore.

Bhopal Gas Disaster demonstration at University of Texas at Austin

Austin, 28.11.2007 20:08

Members of the Association for India's Development held a slideshow presentation and collected signatures to support the survivors of the world's worst industrial disaster. We hadn’t even turned the slideshow on yet when we got our first two signatures. Two UT students had seen the projector light from the main mall and their curiosity drew them to us. They read the fliers we handed to them, and after spending ten minutes or so talking to us they went on their way – they were informed about the world’s worst industrial disaster in Bhopal, India. In 1984, a chemical leak at the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal exposed more than 500,000 people to deadly gases.

The Tuition Accountability Coalition, a group of student leaders from communities across UT, will lead a West Mall rally on Wednesday (Nov. 28) at 2:30pm to reject the latest official recommendation to increase tuition at UT by more than 15% over the next two years and confront the officials who approved it.

The Murder of Lazaro Tista

NYC, 28.11.2007 19:08

There is a quiet apartheid today in most of America that, like the devil with his greatest trick, has convinced us that it doesn’t exist. But it does. The Bantustan is that carriage house behind the dilapidated old Victorian in the Midwest or the one bedroom apartment in Queens that houses three families in rotating shifts. There is now a silent, hidden underclass of over 10 million undocumented immigrants, people who pick your fruit, throw your takeout pizza in the oven, deliver your Chinese food on a bicycle, or do the hard construction work on your MacMansion. They have no right to vote, little or no access to social services, and they are, in effect, long-term residents but not citizens. These people have broken the law but they are not criminals. As individuals, they are more sinned against than they are sinners. But a disenfranchised underclass with no right to vote or organize unions and an expendable pool of temporary workers is a weapon of class warfare that the rich can use against the lower part of the working class, and as such they are already having a destructive effect on civil society and on American democracy.

Baltimore, 28.11.2007 14:08

Every once in a while, a movie comes along which captures, as a metaphor, the times that we are living through. That film is “No Country for Old Men.” It’s based on a novel by Cormac McCarthy. The flick is the creation of the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan. It is a gem of a movie--grim in effect and dark in vision. In it, the villain, a sociopath, (think “Bush-Cheney Gang”) is winning; and the good guy, the Sheriff, (read “The People”), is ready to call it quits!

LNG in Oregon - Update

Portland, 28.11.2007 05:38

There are a host of new fossil fuel projects proposed in Oregon. 3 LNG terminals and 4 major pipelines are now actively seeking approval from local, state, and federal agencies. All of these projects will effectively use Oregon as a "back door" to hook California and the rest of the West Coast on a new generation of foreign fossil fuels.

This is an update to get folks up to speed on where things stand with these major fossil fuel projects.

Eric McDavid Ends Hunger Strike-- For Now

San Francisco Bay Area, 28.11.2007 04:08

Eric McDavid told his supporters on November 23rd that he had ended his two-week long hunger strike. Eric is still requesting vegan food and medical care from the jail, and supporters are still calling the jail in an effort to convince them to give in to these demands. Eric decided last week that he will finish the commissary food he has left in his cell, but will no longer be ordering items from commissary. The food that the jail gives him is insufficient to meet his dietary needs, and he has suffered weight loss in addition to attacks of pericarditis during his recent hunger strike.

Repressione durante le azioni antimilitariste

Switzerland, 27.11.2007 23:37

It's time to think closer about shared living and the right roommates

Portland, 27.11.2007 18:38

As you know by now, the dollar is crashing, and cost of food is expected to soar. The reasons for the very high food costs are greater than the manufactured problem with the cost of oil.
This is an urgent wake up call to use your dollar while you can to get some basic needs meet as we move into a full blown recession. If you have the means of purchasing a rainwater tank, I suggest you do so. Currently, I'm looking for new roommates, and this time around I'm seeking people who are fairly awake a little bit more this time. This is about group survival now and I feel a lot of people who think they are progress in this city are about to get a rude awakening slap in the face.
