US "Diplomacy" from Annapolis to Pakistan: Do as You're Told, or We'll Kill You

New Hampshire, 03.12.2007 00:09

Of course, that's not how the argument starts, but tends to be where it ends up. No one involved in the recent so-called "Peace" Summit in Annapolis even pretended that it might achieve a substantive agreement on the issues. Instead, as NPR recently reported, "the Israelis and Palestinians are… expected to recommit themselves through confidence-building measures that they agreed to four years ago as part of the so-called roadmap to peace."

U.S. Companies Behind Anti-Reform Propaganda in Venezuela

Portland, 02.12.2007 22:38

Article 115 protects new forms of social and collective property.
Thousands of Venezuelans, many of them Chavez supporters, have bought the exaggerations and lies about Venezuela's Constitutional Reform that have been circulating across the country for months. Just a few weeks ago, however, the disinformation campaign ratcheted up various notches as opposition groups and anti-reform coalitions placed large ads in major Venezuelan papers.
Last week, after a barrage of illegal propaganda on the part of both the pro and anti reform camps, Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) began to crack down, following through with their promise to regulate the propaganda. Although published as an anonymous article, Lucena announced that according to the official tax number (RIF) published with the article, the advertisement was actually placed by the Cámara de Industriales del estado Carabobo (The Carabobo State Chamber of Industry). The CIEC is a 71 year-old organization, headquartered in the Carabobo state capital of Valencia, which groups together more than 250 businesses in the region. Among those are dozens of subsidiaries which compose literally a who's who list of some of the largest and most powerful US corporations, including (among others): Ford, General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Bridgestone Firestone, Goodyear, Alcoa, Shell, Pfizer, Dupont, Cargill, Coca-Cola, Kraft, Novartis, Unilever, Heinz, Johnson & Johnson, Citibank, Colgate Palmolive, DHL and Owens Illinois.
It makes sense why US corporations based in Venezuela would be against the reform. Various articles, if applied, could potentially cut in on potential profits, such as the reform of article 301.

CIA Operation "Pliers" Uncovered in Venezuela

DC, 30.11.2007 23:10

An internal CIA memorandum has been obtained by Venezuelan counterintelligence from the US Embassy in Caracas that reveals a very sinister - almost fantastical, were it not true - plan to destabilize Venezuela during the coming days. The plan, titled "OPERATION PLIERS" was authored by CIA Officer Michael Middleton Steere and was addressed to CIA Director General Michael Hayden in Washington. Steere is stationed at the US Embassy in Caracas under the guise of a Regional Affairs Officer. The internal memorandum, dated November 20, 2007, references the "Advances of the Final Stage of Operation Pliers", and confirms that the operation is coordinated by the team of Human Intelligence (HUMINT) in Venezuela. The memo summarizes the different scenarios that the CIA has been working on in Venezuela for the upcoming referendum vote on December 2nd. The Electoral Scenario, as it's phrased, confirms that the voting tendencies will not change substantially before Sunday, December 2nd, and that the SI (YES) vote in favor of the constitutional reform has an advantage of about 10-13 points over the NO vote. The CIA estimates abstention around 60% and states in the memo that this voting tendency is irreversible before the elections.

Dirty tricks on the Royal Mile: Mountgrange and Gentrification

Scotland, 30.11.2007 21:09

A struggle has been going on in the Old Town of Edinburgh for nearly four years, between wealthy developers and community activists. The Council and a company called Mountgrange have been trying to invest and build in the Cannongate area of Edinburgh, and their £200 million 'Caltongate' plans have met a great deal of criticism and opposition from community activists.

Bristol Indymedia Film Night: This Revolution

Bristol, 30.11.2007 20:08

Monday 3rd December 8pm at the Cube Cinema Monday 3rd December 8pm at the Cube Cinema, Stokes Croft, Bristol. Entry £2/£3 (but nobody refused entry for a lack of funds.) As 2007 comes to a close, Bristol Indymedia Film Night presents the official Sundance selected 'This Revolution'. In 1969 Academy Award winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler exploded the boundaries of American cinema with Medium Cool, a film set against the backdrop of the 1968 democratic national convention. Thirty years later, as anti-Bush activists and the New York police force prepared for their encounter on the streets outside the 2004 Republican National Convention, director Stephen Marshall took his cast and crew, including stars Rosario Dawson and Nathan Crooker, into the chaos. The story follows Jake Cassevetes (Nathan Crooker), a network embedded journalist just back from Iraq who is assigned to cover the run-up to the RNC. When he meets and falls in love with Tina Santiago (Rosario Dawson), a young mother widowed after her husband was killed in Iraq, Jake is forced to question his world view. But it is not until he discovers his network has given his videotape of an anarchist Black Bloc group to Homeland Security that Jake decides to take action.
