Burma Solidarity Actions

United Kingdom, 11.12.2007 01:31

The military in Burma (Myanmar) has been unleashing its troops on unarmed demonstrators in a bid to stamp out mounting protests against the junta’s stifling rule, and price rises that have made life for broad layers of working people unbearable. The country's military junta continues to escalate its attacks against the area's ethnic minorities. The All Burma Monks Alliance, supported by the National League for Democracy and the Burmese people in general, have vowed to continue protests.

There are ongoing daily protests outside the Burmese and Chinese embassies in London, where 200 or so protesters rallied on September 27th. Meanwhile a Total petrol station, the largest supporter of the Burmese military regime, was blockaded in Bradford for over an hour. Students there also mandated their Students Union to investigate alternative suppliers after learning the union has an account with Total. The oil company's HQ has also been targeted with a die-in on October 2nd and another Total petrol station, this time in Oxford, was targeted on Saturday.

There have also been calls to petition the UK government to boycott the Chinese Olympics due to China's support of the military regime in Burma, a call to wear red shirts in solidarity.

On September 30th, an emergency national demonstration took place with around a thousand people gathering in Trafalgar Square before marching down Whitehall and on to the Buddhist pagoda in Battersea Park. In Sheffield the Karen community protested on Monday 1st October.

Ongoing protests in solidarity are expected to continue, both in the UK and around the world. Burma's generals appeared to have cut public internet access today to prevent more videos, photographs and information about their violent crackdown getting out.

While the repression of protests in Burma are condemned by the UK government, a protest against the Iraq war that has killed 1.2 million called for the 8th October is banned.

Top Candidates Wrong on Iran

New Hampshire, 10.12.2007 23:09

The National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Iran released earlier this week should come as welcome information to all who support peace and stability in the Middle East. The report has determined with a high degree of confidence that Iran gave up an active nuclear weapons program in 2003 and that Iran does not currently possess nuclear weapons. NIEs are considered to be the intelligence community’s most authoritative statements on issues relating to U.S. security. The presidential candidates need to respond by promoting sound foreign policy positions based on this new intelligence.

Oprah and Obama-mania in Manchester

New Hampshire, 10.12.2007 23:09

I was at the Oprah/Obama event at the Civic Center in Manchester last night. It was a real circus - thousands and thousands of people filling the entire plaza outside waiting to get in. I didn't go in, but gave out yard signs and hundreds of leaflets questioning if Obama is anti-war, urging people to ask Obama to make specific commitments on the War in Iraq. Many of the people there seemed enthusiastically anti-war, some believing Obama is an anti-war candidate. Others said they liked only the first part of the yard sign - "Support the Troops", not the second part - "End the War." Below is the text of the leaflet I gave out.

Nottingham Joins Worldwide Climate Action Call

United Kingdom, 10.12.2007 19:08

While in London and Glasgow over 10.0000 climate campaigners took to the streets to take part in marches over the weekend, in Nottingham, many people took to the delight of the East Midlands Vegan Festival and Sumac Crafts Fair. While these events have a strong social aspect, especially during these dark winter days, there are strong links with those who braved the bad weather to call for climate justice.

Campaigners organising the annual Vegan Festival pointed out that a massive proportion of climate change is caused by livestock farming and the production of meat/dairy products. They urged world leaders in Bali, attending the 2007 United Nations Climate Change Conference, "to take the urgent action needed to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate". Protests calling upon the world leaders for action on climate change have taken place across the world. The last week has seen many actions across the UK on various aspects of the climate change agenda.

Veneçuela...i ara què?

Editorial Cartoon: "Hillary Answers the Tough Ones!"

DC, 10.12.2007 14:09

Another morning-news REM State inspiration classic! Yet another awake-too-early morning finds my wife flipping between early-morning news programs at 6:30am, this time landing on CNN's "American Morning" shitfest which, this particular morning, was running highlights of the previous evening's Donkeycratic Party "debate". Needless to say, of course, I emerged from my REM state just in time to hear some gushy college girl asking Hillary Clinton if she preferred "diamonds or pearls?" to which Her Hillaryship answered — in classic Clintonian fashion, "I like both". As the fog of sleep finally cleared from my brain, and my urge to put my head through the TV screen subsided, I couldn't help wondering: if gender was at least a partial issue here, does anyone honestly think that if, instead, a young guy had been chosen by CNN to ask Hillary a stupid question chosen ahead of time — and CNN did pick the questions asked by the planted "audience members" — would said stupid question still have been "do you prefer diamonds or pearls?"

Bristolians report from Colombia on community resistance to megaprojects and murder Bristolians report from Colombia on community resistance to megaprojects and murder 'Plan de Vida' Guayusa Andina in Colombia writes: We went back to the region where BP are extracting oil to investigate an NGO that the oil companies set up to train rural community members in a more ‘entrepreneurial’ approach to farming, amongst other things. This was a wee bit nerve wracking and I had to go in disguise so that I wasn’t recognised from previous trips as I was trying to be an academic without links to social movements. The oil companies have put tiny amounts of money into this rather dubious NGO in comparison with the huge amounts of funding given to the army - who killed yet another farmer in the region a few days ago. This isn’t the only part of the country where the army is killing populations who don’t fit into a development model geared towards resource extraction by multinational corporations. Last week we traveled to north-east Colombia to hear evidence that social organizations had collected into murders by the army in the region of Catatumbo....Just a little plug to end with: if you want to show solidarity and have fun at the same time, come along to Espacio Bristol Colombia and Colombia Solidarity Campaign's final latin fiesta of the year at Kalabash on Cheltenham Road THIS THURSDAY (13th Dec @ Kalabash, 120 Cheltenham Rd. Suspiciously-Timed Leak Says Police Torture Victims Reach Multi-Million-Dollar Settlement

Chicago, 10.12.2007 07:08

Both the Tribune and the Sun-Times reported on Friday, December 7, that four police torture victims under the infamous Jon Burge regime reached a collective $20 million settlement with the city.

However, it was also revealed in a subsequent newswire post that "[a]ttorneys for both sides in the four police torture cases were pledged to secrecy about the tentative settlement until it was to be broached before the City's Finance Committee on Monday. But in typical City of Chicago fashion, the story was "accidentally" leaked on Friday afternoon -– apparently by City attorneys — assuring that the news would be caught up in a "dead" news cycle just before the weekend."

Despite the settlement and the "burial" of the settlement story, the Burge controversy rages on. Dozens of unjust police torture cases remain without restitution, and those implicated in such torture remain unprosecuted.

Rally Against LNG and LNG Pipelines: Wed. Dec 12th in Portland

Portland, 08.12.2007 20:38

Energy speculators from Texas, New York and California want to use proposed LNG terminals in the Columbia River Estuary to send huge quantities of natural gas to California. Three LNG terminals are proposed in Oregon, and each project would import twice Oregon's total gas demand each day. NW Natural has become an active participant in this scheme by proposing to build the 220-mile long Palomar pipeline that would rip across Oregon from the key salmon habitats of the Columbia Estuary, across the family farms of the Willamette Valley, through the wildlife habitats of the Mt. Hood National Forest and over the Wild and Scenic Deschutes River - all this in order to send gas from the proposed LNG terminals on the Columbia River to a California-bound pipeline near Madras.

Please join a wonderfully diverse coalition of farmers, conservation groups, fisherman, global warming advocates, forestland owners, private property rights advocates, neighborhood activists and many others and take a stand against the largest fossil fuel import project planned for the Northwest in decades.
