New Year San Jose Protest Against Jeppesen Dataplan

San Francisco Bay Area, 05.01.2008 00:39

On January 1st, activists slated, sang, and demonstrated at the downtown San Jose Ice Rink where Jeppesen Dataplan displays a corporate banner. The company handles the logistics for the CIA's torture flights and continues to be a sponsor of the city's ice rink, despite the fact that the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors recently went on record as supporting the Torture Outsourcing Prevention Act and mentioning Jeppesen by name as implicated in the outsourcing of torture.

CIGNA and the death of Nataline Sarkisyan

San Francisco Bay Area, 05.01.2008 00:39

California nurses group says insurer CIGNA has 'blood on their hands'. The family of a 17-year-old woman who died after being initially denied payment for a liver transplant is suing the teen's insurance company. Nataline Sarkisyan died on December 20th after her family removed her from life support. She had been in a vegetative state for weeks due to complications following a bone marrow transplant. Insurer CIGNA HealthCare had first denied a doctor-recommended liver transplant for Nataline, who suffered from leukemia, but had reversed course a day before her death in the face of mounting public pressure.

Endangered Salmon Need Your Help, or Push comes to Shove

Portland, 04.01.2008 22:38

Native Columbia River salmon stocks are under fire once again. We finally have protected them from recreational fishermen, but they still face a series of challenges on the path to spawning. This time it is a group of marine predators who have learned to use our concrete monoliths as a catchment. Learn how to help, the salmon runs need your help today!

The Federal and state governments have spent millions of dollars trying to shore up the dwindling salmon runs of the mighty Columbia River. After decades of abuse to the river corridor, it has become painfully obvious that the salmon will never again number in the millions, as they did at the time Lewis and Clark first recorded their observations of the river. But there is a chance we can help, even just a little.

The problem is the Bonneville fish ladder. It is the bottleneck through which all upriver salmon, including those migrating all the way to the upper Snake in Idaho, must pass in order to reach their birth river. Some creatures, and certainly some humans, have learned that fishing is artificially easy at this bottleneck and camp out, waiting for the next easy meal.

The Case for Socialized Medicine in the United States, and the Struggle to Achieve It

Arkansas, 04.01.2008 15:09

Republican candidate Mitt Romney has declared of Hillary Clinton’s promised health care plan, “It’s a European-style socialized medicine plan, that’s where it leads–and that’s the wrong direction for America” (Shulte). Yet, unfortunately, Clinton’s plan has nothing in common with socialized medicine, neither of the European variety, nor the Canadian single payer. Her plan is to keep the broken and expensive capitalist system of health care, a system that keeps the insurance industry in charge of life and death questions of whether or not we receive health care when we need it.

Finanzkrise - was dann?

Germany, 04.01.2008 10:38

Man will uns glauben machen, das sei alles vorbei. Nichts davon ist vorbei und es wird ein böses Erwachen geben.

Support War Resister Prisoner Brendan Walsh

Portland, 04.01.2008 06:38

23 year old Brendan Walsh has spent over three years in Federal Prison for his role in a militant action that targeted a military recruitment center in Vestal, New York in April 2003. As tanks were entering Baghdad, Brendan took action against the military machinery in the town he was living in. Brendan is slated to be released from prison to a halfway house on February 8th. He's in need of support from our movement more than ever as he faces his release.

During a visit with Brendan last week, he communicated a desire for Kansas Mutual Aid to collect monetary donations to help aid Brendan in buying clothes and other needed items once released. Brendan's halfway house confirmation has been repeatedly delayed, so he has been under a lot of stress as he fights to ensure his release in February. He's in need of as much love and support as we can send. Please consider sending Brendan some words of love and support during his last several weeks in prison.

Shell Oil/Broadwater in Long Island Sound Shot Down

NYC, 03.01.2008 17:08

Still awaiting the final version of a key federal report, the Broadwater Energy project has been told that its application with state-level environmental regulators is lacking in several key areas and that the project could have “significant adverse impacts” on Long Island Sound's fish and lobsters.

Broadwater, a partnership of Shell US Gas and Power and TransCanada Corp., applied in early 2006 to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for permission to locate a floating liquefied natural gas processing, storage and supply barge in New York state waters in the middle of Long Island Sound.

The Sea Lions Need You: Time Is Short

Portland, 03.01.2008 06:38

In short, NW officials are scapegoating sea lions for the decline of the salmon populations on the Columbia. But it is not sea lions who are causing the salmon to go extinct, it is humans. Killing sea lions will not help salmon. It will only hurt sea lions.

You need to go out to the Columbia and see these animals to really understand. They are our neighbors. They clearly love each other. They sing to each other. They caress each other. They are intelligent beings, smarter than your dog. And they love their lives.

The best place to see them right now is along the pier in Astoria, just behind the safeway store. But soon, they will be making their semi-annual journey upstream, following the runs, as they have done for thousands of years. Then, you will be able to see and hear them all along the Columbia, sometimes even in the Willamette. They are part of our heritage as Cascadians. They, as much as the salmon, are part of who we are.

Please do something to save them. Take this one small action. If you act, it will make a difference. Please make a few phone calls.

"A Daily Reminder of how the Invasion of Iraq Really Happened"

Bristol, 03.01.2008 01:08

Bristol Peace Vigiler and British Soldier discuss Iraq Bristol Peace Vigiler and British Soldier discuss Iraq A Vigiler writes: The beautiful metallic blue motor bike glided slowly past us as we stood opposite the Hippodrome in the centre. But he didn’t blow his horn in support, the way that many motorists do as they pass the Bristol Peace Vigil, in fact he stopped his bike and came back to talk to us. He said that he was only a sapper, (private) but he had been to Iraq a lot and was currently home on leave. He obviously didn’t agree with our peaceful protest and wanted to know about the Bristol Peace Vigil and why we were demonstrating......But on reflection it did occur to me that the arguments he used would have come more naturally from a recruitment officer rather than a private. It has been widely reported that the Forces are becoming desperate for new recruits, and that the army has been targeting schools (in mainly poor areas!) in recruitment drives. It has been reported that schools in some poorer areas have had as many as nineteen visits from the Armed Forces, in a year! For sure, they would prefer that the Bristol Peace Vigil was not a daily reminder of how the Invasion of Iraq really happened. They would prefer that we believe the Tony Blair / Alistair Campbell...But many of us have longer memories. Brighton fights for right to protest

United Kingdom, 02.01.2008 20:39

A RIGHT to Protest demonstration is being held in central Brighton on Saturday January 19, meeting at 12 noon in Churchill Square.

The focus will particularly be on recent police repression at the EDO Brighton bomb factory. There have been 15 arrests since August for singing, shouting and generally expressing opinions about the presence of an arms factory in the community.

Local people in Brighton have been campaigning for the last three and a half years against a bomb factory in their back yard. EDO MBM make componants that are used in weapons deployed against the people of Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine.

Recently at the weekly noise demos at the factory police have been using archaic local by-laws to suppress people expressing their thoughts and feelings at the local weapons manufacturers.

In October five people were arrested for singing karaoke badly outside EDO MBM, they were hauled off into a police van after a particularly bad rendition of "We are the Champions". Three were arrested under Section 235 of the Local Government Act (brought in for bad buskers and street drunks) while two were arrested for breach of Section 14.

Other people have faced arrest for blowing an air horn and plugging in a PA. The town demo is aimed to show support for these people and also to safeguard the hard won rights to freedom of opinion and freedom of assembly that are being taken away at an alarming rate in this country. Bring banners, drums, air horns and voices.

Urgent Action Alert!! Sacred Yucca Mtn in Imminent Danger!

Portland, 01.01.2008 16:40

Yucca Mountain is sacred to the Shoshone as an herb gathering site, for rituals, and as a part of their stories. Yucca Mountain is known in Shoshone language as Snake Mountain. Indeed it looks like a snake. It is said that the snake was headed north when it froze where it is. Further more it is said that it will move again and "flip around". Geologists say that there are thirteen different fault lines running through it.

Public hearings have not been well attended, statements mostly in favor of the plan to put all of the nuclear waste in the country in this one sacred place. Local papers & media spin have recently stated that opposition to the nuke dump had dropped off since the passing of Corbin Harney. The nuclear reps are confident to the point of acting like it's a done deal. LETS PROVE THEM WRONG! MAKE YOUR COMMENT NOW & TAKE ACTION!!

Citizens can make an oral statement at the scheduled public hearings or fill out a form and mail it in to EIS Office U.S. Department of Energy Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Mgmt, 1551 Hillshire Dr. Las Vegas, NV, 89195-7308 or by e-mail.

The selection 2008 page is for all the articles about 2008 elections, candidates, etc. Because this stuff starts to overwhelm the site, especially now that state primaries/caucuses are close, the selection 2008 page has a unique characteristic from other topic type pages. Articles sent to the selection 2008 page will not also show up on the front page newswire. So if you are interested in that stuff, visit the selection 2008 page. Likewise, if you are posting election related articles, please check the selection 2008 checkbox under actions on the publish page.

Community Independence Project needs some help from Indy

Portland, 31.12.2007 14:38

Hi folks, We'll be doing a press conference on Jan 1st announcing upcoming goals for 2008. Due to space concerns we don't have the room to just post the location for this conference, but if any folks are interested we don't want to exclude members of the underground press that would like to be involved. Please email to RSVP.

Also, we need some help from the community in two areas.
1. We don't have any video cameras and we would like a recording of the event along with some folks who might be able to edit it.
2. Webwork. Due to Revolt ltd taking some time off, we need to find a new server and host for a website. If anyone knows hookups for webhosting, that would be awesome. Likewise, we need some folks who can do admin/sitebuilding work and are willing to teach.

Please reserve the following dates also: Feb 29th, Mar 1st and 2nd from 7 - 9pm. We will be doing community informational forums around the CIP and its programs those nights in southeast, northeast, and downtown Portland. The news conference on Tuesday is for underground and aboveground members of the press primarily, all interested persons who do not consider themselves journalists should be encouraged to email us for more info, or please participate in the upcoming forums.
