Live-Ticker zu Siko-Protesten in München

Germany, 10.02.2008 15:40

NZ State Provides Communications Equipment to Burma’s Junta

Aotearoa, 10.02.2008 08:09

New Zealand State-Owned communications company Kordia has announced a contract to build cellphone towers for Burma’s ruling military junta.

Use of cellphones in Burma is restricted to members of the ruling elite. To buy a cellphone, a Burmese citizen must obtain a recommendation from a military official and pay a fee of NZ$1500, in a country where average incomes are less than NZ$2 a day. In announcing plans to extend the cellphone network, the Junta has said that licenses will be granted to members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, a pro-Junta militia that was used to crush pro-democracy protests in 2007.

Migrant Caravan - Welcome to Portland Community Forum

Portland, 10.02.2008 04:39

We want to invite everyone to come to Liberty Hall to welcome the volunteers that have traveled in fifty cars to Portland with the Migrant March III. They are traveling from San Diego to Canada and back, with border actions on the US/Canadian border.

The event will bring together organizers and concerned community members from the Northwest and the US/Mexico border region to share experiences and strategies for engaging immigrant and allied communities in movement building.

For the third consecutive year a group called "Gente Unida", lead by Enrique Morones, a well known activist in San Diego who works on behalf of immigrants, has organized an immigrant march to travel throughout the Western United States. This Sunday, February 8th the marchers will arrive in Portland, Oregon, where they will be greeted at Liberty hall, where a community forum will be held -- bringing together activists from the South with activists of the North. On the 12th of February they will arrive at the Canadian border where they will hold a special action, known as a "US Border Action".

Round-up of Super Tuesday Protests

United States, 09.02.2008 10:38

While the presidential contenders were busy raising millions of dollars in a matter of hours trying to convince people to vote for them at the caucuses, some people took the Super Tuesday fiasco as an opportunity to bring up issues that both the candidates and the mainstream media have continued to ignore.

Unconventional Denver, a local group part of nationwide network of anarchists and anti-authoritarians organizing against the upcoming political conventions, called for last minute actions against the elections on Tuesday, February 5th. read more | more elections coverage | more dnc/rnc coverage

Activists turned many customers away (who vowed to never shop there again) much to the dismay of the store's employees.

San Francisco Medical Cannabis Patients Speak Out Against DEA's Threats to Safe Access

San Francisco Bay Area, 09.02.2008 05:08

On Monday February 4th, members of San Francisco's medical cannabis community and their supporters gathered to call for Mayor Gavin Newsom to end his silence about recent US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)'s scare tactics against medical cannabis facility landlords. On Wednesday, Newsom's spokesperson made a lukewarm statement against the DEA's actions. Some SF Supervisors are concerned that this statement did not demonstrate enough leadership, because many measures would be needed to protect dispensaries from closure, and to assure patients' continued access to their medicine should the DEA's threatening letters lead to many dispensaries closing down. On February 12th, the SF Board of Supervisors will hear a resolution that would show the Supes' support for John Conyers, the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee of Congress, who called for hearings to investigate the DEA's attempts to undermine California state laws. Patients and supporters will speak out in support of this resolution, which will be heard at 2pm on the 2nd floor of San Francisco City Hall.

Periodistes i mitjans condemnats a ser mercenaris

3/4: California High Court to Hear Oral Arguments in Historic Marriage Case

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.02.2008 07:38

The California Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on Tuesday,March 4th in the marriage cases that are challenging the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger highlighted that the California Supreme Court should decide the constitutional questions posed by the marriage statutes when he vetoed two measures passed by the California Legislature in 2005 and 2007 that would have permitted same-sex couples to marry. The California Supreme Court typically issues its decisions within 90 days following oral arguments.

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.02.2008 04:39

Volunteers hope to gather over 400,000 signatures on a petition to put the California Cannabis Hemp and Health Initiative on the state's ballot for 2008. Advocates of hemp as well as of the religious and medical uses of cannabis have sponsored this initiative, which would repeal criminal and civil penalties for cannabis, ban drug testing for metabolites, and provide that marijuana be regulated in a manner similar to the wine industry. It would also decriminalize the cultivation, distribution, and possession of industrial hemp, as well as order the immediate release from jail of all non-violent marijuana offenders.

LNG Fight Heats Up

Portland, 08.02.2008 04:38

Yesterday, between 300 and 400 people gathered on the Capitol steps to stage a rally against liquefied natural gas (LNG) development in Oregon. These developments face huge local public opposition in Northern and Southern Oregon, and Wednesday marked the first time that the two groups joined, en masse, to send a message of resistance to fossil fuel speculators, politicians, and regulating agencies.

The fight continues to heat up, as the Governor has stated his belief that natural gas originating in LNG terminals may act as a "bridge fuel". The Governor appears to be on the wrong side of this issue, as he faced boos from a friendly crowd at a Focus the Nation event last week when he mouthed industry rhetoric in favor of LNG. Ultimately, the Wednesday event offered LNG and pipeline opponents throughout the region an opportunity to connect, share ideas, and lobby the State legislators with common themes on a day that highlighted the unity of all Oregonians against these huge foreign fossil fuel developments.

Permanent Iraq Occupation to Control Oil

New Hampshire, 08.02.2008 01:39

In the latest of his many "signing statements," George Bush has declared his intention to ignore the parts of the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act banning permanent military bases in Iraq and US control over Iraq's oil. Perhaps this didn't make it into most news outlets because it exposes only what was already known. After all, on August 31, 2005, the AP reported that George Bush said that we are still occupying Iraq for protection of the country's vast oil fields.

Germany, 07.02.2008 20:39
