Faslane Base = Fully Accessible!

Fence Liberation Front, 25.06.2004 15:22

Yet another breach of security at Faslane Nuclear Submarine Base! Three women, including one wheelchair user, were arrested in the base's oil fuel depot on Thursday morning. Embarrassed MoD police also found holes in the OFD chain link fence, and the weld mesh perimeter fence of the base. And that's before they saw the four buildings covered in peace slogans....

Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba Passes Through Ashland

imc volunteer, 25.06.2004 12:57

Around 40 southern Oregonians welcomed the Pastors for Peace Caravan in Ashland last night. The yellow school bus is one of 15 buses in North America heading toward the Mexican border at McAllen, Texas. One hundred fifty disobedient citizens are taking part in this 15th annual caravan, carrying donated supplies of all kinds to Cuba in a symbolic defiance of the 45-year old U.S. blockade of the island country, and George Bush's recent tightening of that blockade with even more restrictions on travel and trade.

Greenpeace Continues its Resistance to Old-Growth Logging

lotus, 24.06.2004 18:40

Umpqua National Forest, Ore - Greenpeace continued to spotlight destructive logging practices on U.S. public lands today, this time in Oregon's Umpqua National Forest, administered by the U.S. Forest Service. Four activists attached themselves to a three-ton cargo container placed in the middle of active logging operations at the site of the "Peanuts" timber sale, where felling and hauling of old-growth trees is underway by the D.R. Johnson company. Surrounded by stumps, the bright yellow container, which reads "Bush's Forest Destruction Stops Here" is the latest staging ground for Greenpeace's campaign calling for a moratorium on commercial logging of ancient forest on public lands.

Fayetteville's Proposed TIF District: A Threat to Area Neighborhoods?

Al Vick, 24.06.2004 17:23

.....what about the renter whose home is sold to a condominium developer, with a profit to the home owner? That person may have to relocate to South of 15th street or Farmington or Elkins, as one realtor told me. This is okay, if one is only thinking of the marketplace and supply and demand, but not if one thinks about what it means to live in a neighborhood, to have children there with their friends and connections. - Dr. Kathy Bouwman: Fayetteville resident

CIMC, 23.06.2004 05:33

Teachers say no to school closings & classroom cuts, on the backs of the neediest students.

On Wednesday, June 23, parents, Local School Council Members, teachers, representatives of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, local school reformers, civil rights activists, Chicago Teachers Union leaders called on the members of the Board of Education to reject Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncans plan to close ten schools and eight Child Parent Centers, and block freshman enrollment at two high schools. 'By the Pricking of My Thumbs, Something Wicked this Way Comes' : Details of Various Protests

Indymedia Ireland, 22.06.2004 16:00

'All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand.' sez Wag Gorge W Bush comes to the Emerald Isle. Here's how he will be greeted. From The Newswire: All Systems go for Protest as POTUS Touches Down in Shannon? The demonstration will assemble at 7pm in Shannon Town Centre. Protestors will then march to the terminal building at Shannon Airport. On the possibility of the protestors being prevented from entering Shannon, Anti-War Ireland says: For the guards to prevent a peaceful protest from going ahead would amount to a serious breach of our civil liberties, and would be unacceptable. It would also be ironic, given that Bush expects to be applauded by our government for supposedly restoring democracy and civil liberties to the people of Iraq at the very moment ours are being threatened. At this point in time, we have no reason to believe that the protest will be banned. Anti-War Ireland has written to An Garda Sochana to give notice of a peaceful demonstration, and to indicate the march route. The garda have not been in touch with us, so we can only assume that its all systems go. Invitational video: AVI WMV THURSDAY 24TH JUNE Shannon Peace Camp Opens / Update / Directions FRIDAY 25TH JUNE IAWM STOP BUSH Demonstration: Dublin: 7pm: Regional Demonstrations in Galway, Waterford, Tralee and Sligo: Also start at 7pm Reclaim the Skies with Light and Noise: Anti War Ireland Protest: Shannon: 7pm: Guidelines BushWalk for Fun and Peace Begins: Lahinch to Dromoland UPDATES: About 10,000 at Dublin, 1000 at Shannon. / Photos: 1 2 / c.2000 Galway Aquatic protestors arrested Police raid Peace Camp. Three activists in court - 28th June

22.06.2004 09:01

On the 1st June 2003, an affinity group of 17 activists blockaded a motorway in Aubonne, Switzerland to prevent delegates from reaching the G8 summit in Evian. Two climbers hung suspended as counterweights from one rope that crossed the motorway bridge over the aubonne valley. Others held banners and blockaded the traffic. Despite being informed about the nature of the action, police cut the rope causing one climber to plunge 20 metres, while the other was saved just in time by her friends.

Councils say yes to Solid Energys destruction of Happy Valley

Jonathan Oosterman, 22.06.2004 06:29

State-owned Solid Energy has been granted resource consents by the West Coast Regional and Buller District Councils for its proposed opencast coal mine at Happy Valley near Westport, despite strong opposition by local and national environmental groups. The West Coast Regional and Buller District Councils are already complicit with Solid Energys pollution of the Mangatini Stream and Ngakawau River. Now they are complicit with the destruction of Happy Valley. They have shown that they can be trusted as little as Solid Energy to safeguard the environment.

Ten STILL Imprisoned for Anti-G8

imc-global, 20.06.2004 17:24

Despite ending with promises of democracy, the 2004 G8 Summit hosted by the United States, on Sea Island, Gerogia, has left behind 10 activists in the Glynn County Jail for exercising what they believe to be their First Amendment right to speak out regarding the grievances they hold with their government (most recent statement).

There are still 10 people imprisoned, 9 males and one female. Four of the Brunswick Ten have begun a hunger strike and are demanding that the charges for all 15 arrested on Thursday's walk to Sea Island be dropped. [PRESS RELEASE]

The Brunswick Ten are still being denied access to the press, visitation from friends and family, and the ability to meet with their lawyers as a group which is hindering their legal preparations. [PRESS RELEASE] [UPDATE] Daily vigils outside the Glynn County Jail are being held. The preliminary hearing for the Brunswick Ten is scheduled for next Thursday, June 24th.

The arrestees who have been separated out and sent to "population" have issued another statement. Check out the audio blog to hear the latest message from the arrestees! And read more on the G8 Protests and the Brunswick Ten at Atlanta IMC!
