Venezuela 2008: A libertarian proposal for the current situation

Portland, 05.03.2008 05:51

* The Collective Editorship of El Libertario, www.nodo50.org/ellibertario, expounds its vision of which path to follow in the current situation in Venezuela, summed up in the slogan, "Against the (B)oligarchy, demagoguery and corruption: Autonomous struggle of the underdogs!

Positive transformations in society are produced by the actions of popular movements and not by governments. As has been clearly illustrated in the case of Venezuela, as well in other parts of Latin America, the will for change of the majority has been channelled and co-opted by a new bureaucracy which tries, by all available means, to tighten its grip on power.

Flood Victims blockade Government Office in Leeds

United Kingdom, 04.03.2008 21:38

Residents from flood stricken areas of Yorkshire and Humberside blockaded the Government Office in Leeds on Friday to protest at its continued promotion of airport expansion. Inspired by last year’s camp for climate action at Heathrow, the protesters from Hull, South Yorkshire and the Calder Valley used pop-up tents to set up camp outside the main entrance.

The timing of the protest coincided with the final stages in the adoption of the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) – the area’s fifteen year development plan which is currently on the desk of government minister Baroness Andrews, awaiting final approval. The plan allows for a threefold expansion of passenger flights from Yorkshire and Humberside. Bizarrely, voices which you might have expected to argue against this madness seem all to eager - Friends of The Earth made a submission to the RSS suggesting that an expansion of air travel was acceptable. (Maybe they should rename themselves Foes of the Earth?)

Procession for the Future

Portland, 04.03.2008 20:39

I attended an incredible event at PSU this evening sponsored by the Backbone Campaign. The event featured speakers Antonia Juhasz, author of "The Bush Agenda: Invading the World One Economy at a Time," and Rev. Lennox Yearwood, CEO of the Hip Hop Caucus.

But this evenings event wasn't all there is to the Backbone Campaign. The Backbone Campaign will bring its Procession for the Future to Portland for a parade, Tuesday, March 4th at noon. Twelve giant puppets, representing progressive issues such as Universal Health Care, Climate Stabilization, Fair Trade, and others, will assemble at Pioneer Courthouse Square and process a mile through downtown to Portland State University. At the PSU Smith Memorial Student Union Building, the puppets will circle up on the park blocks and transform into a Festival for the Future, an activist theme park and training ground for students and others.

These good folks will need about 100 people just to manage these puppets during the Parade.

These are the images/puppets being brought to Portland:

Scott Ritter Sounds the Alarm on Iran

Boston, 04.03.2008 19:10

Outspoken former UN weapons inspector in Iraq Scott Ritter visited Boston in February for a presentation and discussion on the Bush administration's secret plans for the "War on Terror," including a possible nuclear attack on Iran. Ritter, who visited Iran on a fact-finding mission, commented, "We are seeing history repeat itself," referring to the disaster in Iraq which he also warned about. Strategies for the peace movement and ordinary Americans to end the war on Iraq and to stop this dangerous move towards expansion of the Iraq war to the whole Middle East were also discussed. What’s Wrong with the 2010 Olympics?

Boston, 04.03.2008 16:09

The Secwepemc have never ceded their lands to Canada or to anyone else. They have consistently affirmed their right to live as they always have, by hunting and fishing to sustain their communities. Development has slowly been eroding this way of life. Despite their recognized right to their ancestral lands, Canadian courts have sided with the province and developers in destroying their habitat as well as the habitats of many wild animals. The concerns of the First Nation peoples are not new. Naomi Klein wrote a 2003 piece for the Guardwarian entitled, “The Olympics Land Grab,” in which she described the repressive measures used by the Canadian government to enforce its presumed right to overrun native lands. ILWU to Shut Down West Coast Ports May 1- Demanding End to War in Iraq and Afghanistan

Portland, 04.03.2008 01:39

In a major step for the U.S. labor movement, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has announced that it will shut down West Coast ports on May 1, to demand an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Middle East. This is the first time in decades that an American union has decided to undertake industrial action against a U.S. war. The action announced by the powerful West Coast dock workers union, to stop work to stop the war, should be taken up by unions and labor organizations throughout the United States and internationally. And the purpose of such actions should be not to beg the bourgeois politicians whose hands are covered with blood, having voted for every war budget for six and a half years, but a show of strength of the working people who make this country run, and who can shut it down!

VIDEO: Ramona Africa interview about the MOVE 9 Parole Hearings

Portland, 04.03.2008 01:39

In this new interview, Ramona Africa talks about the upcoming MOVE 9 Parole Hearings that are scheduled for April. MOVE is asking for support. Stay tuned for an online petition and sample letter to send to the Parole Board. Visit the new move9parole.blogspot.com site created for this important time.

Ramona Africa is the sole adult survivor of the May 13, 1985 massacre of 11 members of the MOVE organization. The FBI and the City of Philadelphia dropped a C4 bomb on MOVE's Osage Avenue home in West Philadelphia. Both 30-year old Ramona and 13-year old Birdie Africa (the only 2 survivors) report that as the MOVE family attempted to escape their burning home, their were met with massive rounds of automatic gunfire, forcing 11 members of the MOVE family to be burnt alive. Ramona dodged gunfire and escaped from the fire with permanent scarring from the burns. Ramona was charged with conspiracy, riot, and multiple counts of simple and aggravated assault. Subsequently Ramona served 7 years in prison. If she had chosen to sever her ties with MOVE and renounce the teachings of John Africa, she could have been released far earlier. In the face of this she held true to her revolutionary beliefs and was uncompromising in the face of state terror.

Tre Arrow Trial Set for May 6

Portland, 04.03.2008 01:39

Judge Hubel scheduled Arrow's trial for May 6th. Arrow is to be held as a flight risk and potential danger pending the trial. Arrow is currently being held in Multnomah County. Because of security concerns it is not yet known where he will be moved to. Tre faces fourteen counts with the charges of arson and conspiracy alone possibly resulting in life sentences.

Greeted by press outside the courthouse after the arraignment, (attorney) Loney stated that Tre felt that the time was right to return to Oregon to set the record. "His spirit is great," said Loney. "We are very happy that U.S. marshals will meet his raw vegan diet. He is a strong, centered and spiritual individual. This is what has carried him through."

Also speaking to press was Tre's sister Shawna Scarpetti. "Over the past four years we've had the time to discuss about how unjust and unfair what he is facing is. He absolutely believes that his attorneys will secure his freedom."

World Can't Wait Arrestees Win!

Portland, 03.03.2008 21:38

On 5 October 2006, 10 responsible citizens were arrested in the World Can't Wait protest. That day they protested against the war and against Bush in a world that soon would no longer be dominated by republicans. In December '06, Ryan Dunn won his jury trial with Leah Greenwald providing the legal heroics. Civil disobedience protesters often win their jury trials in this county because the community does not support police behavior, and DA prosecution, of civil disobedience protesters.

Today was the first day of trial for most of the remaining group of 9 arrestees. The state told the court it had enough witnesses for this trial to last 3 WEEKS! But this morning, Spencer Hahn argued on behalf of all arrestees that the court and the State of Oregon had denied all defendants their Speedy Trial rights. Judge Philbrook heard all argument from the DA against the motion, heard arguments from other defense lawyers supporting it, and carefully considered all evidence relevant to the speedy trial motion. After carefully considering all the evidence, J. Philbrook ruled that the cases against the defendants should be dismissed!!!!

Protesters Demand Hands Off Iraqi Oil!

United Kingdom, 03.03.2008 07:08

As part of the international day of action called by Hands Off Iraqi Oil on Saturday 23rd February, a group of protesters and local people closed down a Shell forecourt for two hours in Birmingham whilst in Coventry there was a series of 5 banner drops. Both actions sent a defiant message of solidarity to Iraqi oil workers resisting attempts to steal billions of dollars in oil revenue from their devastated country.

Since 2003, the UK and US governments, the IMF, and various oil corporations including Shell and BP are trying to force through a proposed oil law which will allow oil corporations unhindered access to their oil wealth, bypassing the Iraqi economy entirely.

Elsewhere the callout for action resulted in actions in, London, Liverpool, Wrexham, Coventry, Bristol, Southend, Amsterdam and Washington [video]

During the year Rios travels throughout the west coasts of Canada and the US and encourages trade with Mexico (which has become increasingly efficient for corporations as a result of NAFTA). SU students were moved to action after having organized a panel discussion on free trade, indigenous rights and migration earlier this year.

Information Activism at PDX airport

Portland, 02.03.2008 04:39

This is a little known opportunity for any activist group to crack a mainstream populace. A little known "freedom of information" policy at the Portland airport (that they somehow left out of the patriot act) allows for virtually any political, activist, or information group to set up a table and hand out material of their choice. A permit must be acquired at the Port of Portland office in the airport which involves a brief meeting and submission of the material to be distributed. They are very friendly and gracious and after the first permit is acquired it can be faxed in subsequently. The permit is good for a week and has to be renewed each week. At this time the POP supplies the table and chairs however they won't after the end of march.
