U.S. Occupation Backs Shia Civil War

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.03.2008 00:39

Fighting between Iraqi government forces and militias loyal to Moqtada Sadr erupted March 25th in Basra. A new civil war is breaking out in Iraq as American-backed Iraqi government forces, many of whom are members of SCIRI's Badr militia, fight rival Shia militiamen tied to Sadr's Mehdi army. Fighting quickly engulfed Baghdad's Sadr City and spread to other towns. On March 28th, US planes bombed alleged Mehdi Army positions both in Basra and in Baghdad. Despite the US intervention, government troops were unable to pierce Mehdi Army defenses or over-run their positions. The police force in Basra suffered numerous mutinies.

NW Regional Council of Carpenters Picket at Condo-building site on Mississippi Avenue

Portland, 29.03.2008 19:38

Friday March 28, 2008, the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters staged a picket line at the site of the Mississippi Avenue Lofts project (Skidmore and Mississippi Ave), demanding that contractor Gray Purcell pay area standard wages and offer area standard benefits.

The union picketers showed up at 6:30 am in the rainy and snowy morning, but the situation got heated when a private security guard for the condo-project used the metal fence to to push against the picketers, threatened to mace them, then called the police, reporting a "riot." [ Read More ]

To Snitch or Not To Snitch: The View From The Other Side

Boston, 29.03.2008 14:08

I decided to write this article in response to the endless criticism that is being directed against the “Stop Snitching” movement by critics claiming that Hip Hop is responsible for the “Stop Snitching” movement and the “Us vs. Them” mentality youth of color have towards law enforcement agencies. As a former gang member and street combatant of the drug wars that dominated the streets of Philly in the late 80’s and a member of the generation that came of age listening to Hip Hop I believe I am qualified to offer a frontline perspective from the other side of the issue, especially as one who was sentenced to life without parole as a juvenile because of the testimony of a snitch co-defendant that was close to 10 years older than I.

Nottingham Activist Returns From Whale Saving Mission In Antartica

United Kingdom, 29.03.2008 11:10

A Nottingham resident who joined the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as part of their crew on the vessel Steve Irwin has returned home. Dan, who has volunteered with Sea Shepherd previously, rejoined in the middle of this year's anti-whaling mission against the continued Japanese whale hunting activities in the Southern Ocean. Named Operation Migaloo, after the only known albino humpback in the world, this was Sea Shepherd's fourth expedition to the remote southern waters off the coast of Antarctica and has been typically eventful.

In January, two Sea Shepherd volunteers were taken hostage by Japanese whalers. Then in March, several of the crew were injured when the Japanese military threw grenades onto the ship and opened fire on them. The Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin covered a total of 20,090 nautical miles (37,205 kilometers) during Opertaion Migaloo and made 3 return trips from Melbourne, Australia to the coast of Antarctica in 3½ months. In total, the ship was at sea for 83 days between December 5, 2007 and March 15, 2008. It is estimated that due to continued harrasment by the Sea Shepherd, the Japanese have not managed to get even half their whale quota this hunting season.

NYC, 29.03.2008 00:08

Wearing yellow shirts that declare, "Stop Loan Sharks," hundreds of protestors from across the US marched on JP Morgan Case headquarters and then into the lobby of Bear Stearns across the street. Having suffered through the mortgage crisis, and finding themselves unable or struggling to pay off higher interest rates, the participants on Wednesday expressed their outrage at a government backed $20 billion dollar bail-out of Bear Stearns, one of the key investment banks behind the melt-down.

Third Circuit Court Rules Against a New Guilt-Phase Trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal!

United States, 28.03.2008 17:37

While ruling against the three issues that could have led to a new guilt-phase trial, the court affirmed Judge Yohn's 2001 decision overturning the death sentence. If the District Attorney wants to re-instate the death sentence, the DA must call for a new penalty-phase jury trial that would be limited to the question of life in prison without a chance of parole or a death sentence. See lead attorney Robert R. Bryan's response, and articles by the Philadelphia Inquirer (w/ special archive page), David Lindorff, and The German Network Against the Death Penalty and to Free Mumia.

Protest actions are planned for Friday, March 28, in New York City, and San Francisco. In Philadelphia a press conference and emergency planning meeting are scheduled for Monday, March 31, as well as a mass demonstration on April 26. For the latest updates, go to FreeMumia.com.

Abu-Jamal's friends, The MOVE 9, have parole interviews in early April. At a PA State Capitol press conference this week (WATCH VIDEOS), supporters publicized the campaign to contact the Parole Board and sign an online petition.

A Culture of Death And Destruction

Boston, 28.03.2008 17:08

Some people have likened the Earth to a relatively small lifeboat wheeling in an incredibly vast sea of outer space. If they also think that the sinking of the Titanic was a sad disaster, they will be heartbroken over the tragic devastation when this sort of occurrence happens on a planetary scale. In the end, the answers almost don't matter because, as Judy Bonds states, "In Southern West Virginia we live in a war zone. Three and one-half million pounds of explosives are being used every day to blow up the mountains. Blasting our communities, blasting our homes, poisoning us, trying to intimidate us. I don't mind being poor. I mind being blasted and poisoned. - There ARE no jobs on a dead planet."

Nottingham And Leicester Join Aldermaston Anniversary

United Kingdom, 28.03.2008 16:38

At Easter 1958 the recently formed Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) organised a march from London to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment close to Aldermaston in Berkshire, England. On March 24 2008 CND marked the anniversary of this event by returning to the base. Protesters from around the country formed a four and half mile long human chain around the base, symbolically closing it.

A contingent from Nottingham and Leicester went along to participate in the protest. They joined protesters from the East of England at the "Boiler House" gate to express their opposition to the renewal of the Trident nuclear missile system and call for nuclear disarmament.

Sea Lions, Make Your Comments to WDFW Before April 4th.

Portland, 28.03.2008 06:38

Often, people get caught up in causes far away ... this is something right here, tangible, in our own region that we can really do something about... Aside from being extremely ethically problematic, killing sea lions to help recovering fish populations does not have a science-based foundation, and also has a very unpredictable outcome... There is simply no reason to have Sea lions be killed in vain.

"Under provisions of the State Environmental Policy Act, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is soliciting public comments on the sea lion removal proposal. Comments may be submitted from March 21 through April 4 via email ( SEPAdesk2@dfw.wa.gov) or by mail to Teresa Eturaspe, SEPA coordinator, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, 600 Capitol Way N., Olympia, WA." Lets get the powers that be to reconsider this irresponsible course of action and focus on a more logical and effective management strategy in order to promote endangered fish populations--stricter fishing regulations. He points out that his street is the next block over and that it makes little sense to cross 30-40 feet of pavement just to cross back in a couple of seconds. He also points out that he's seen little girls riding their bikes the way he has and asks me if I think the police would have pulled them over."

Activists Shut Down Visitor Center at Yellowstone

Portland, 27.03.2008 22:38

Two West Yellowstone women, Miriam Wasser, 20, and Cat Simonidis, 22, locked themselves together around a post inside the Mammoth Visitor's Center in Yellowstone National Park at approximately 10:30 this morning to call attention to the Park Service's slaughter of nearly 1,000 bison since February 8. Upon discovering the women, Yellowstone officials closed the visitor's center to members of the public and the media, including reporters from CNN, CBS, and an independent film maker.

In spite of receiving thousands of calls, letters, and emails from concerned citizens opposed to the bison slaughter, Yellowstone National Park remains intent on capturing and killing bison. As the women staged their action, Yellowstone Rangers captured between 30 and 50 bison a few miles away. Between February 8 and March 26, Park rangers have captured more than 1200 bison on the north side of Yellowstone National Park. While the government's official reason for the slaughter is to prevent the spread of brucellosis from wild bison to cattle, no such transmission has ever been documented.

If I Can't Dance: Why Is The Left So Boring?

DC, 27.03.2008 18:10

Last weekend I sang at an antiwar protest in downtown Portland, Oregon, on the fifth anniversary of the ongoing slaughter in Iraq. In both its good and bad aspects, the event downtown was not unusual. Hard-working, unpaid activists from various organizations and networks put in long hours organizing, doing publicity, and sitting through lots of contentious meetings in the weeks and months leading up to the event. On the day of the event, different groups set up tents to network with the public and talk about matters of life and death. There was a stage with talented musicians of various musical genres performing throughout the day, and a rally with speakers in the afternoon, followed by a march. Attendance was pathetically low. In large part I'm sure this was due to the general sense of discouragement most people in the US seem to feel about our ability to effect change under the Bush regime. It was raining especially hard by west coast standards, and that also didn't help…

March 2008: Prison Dispatch from Jeff “Free” Luers

Portland, 27.03.2008 07:08

What a long and strange journey this past year has been. I have been riding highs and lows as I have been struggling to regain my freedom and find a balance between my desires for this movement and my own personal happiness. I've made no secret of my often conflicting emotions or my disappointment in radical struggles here in the United States. I have strived to remain true to the ideals in which I believe.

As many of you are aware, I was resentenced on February 28th, after years of fighting for a reduced sentence. In the months preceding my resentencing I was faced with numerous obstacles and forced to make difficult decisions. I wrote a statement acknowledging I was wrong to believe that arson could achieve the change I desired, though I added I was not ashamed of nor did I regret my actions. Judge Billings told me that in his 35 years as an attorney and judge that my statement was the most sincere and passionate he'd ever heard. He told me he was impressed with me... He finished by wishing me the best of luck... I'm still here and I am not quitting. ~ Jeffrey "Free" Luers

The Awakening Left: Inside the Lancaster, PA M15 March

United States, 27.03.2008 05:13

Lancaster, Pa., is more known for the Amish and politely staunch social conservatism than for a vibrant progressive community. But over the past years, as the Iraq war drags on. our sleepy little city’s left is waking up. One sign of our awakening is the 700-plus crowd that came out on March 15 to express their discontent with the war. Following are short profiles of people who attended the rally, and the reasons that brought them to Binn’s park that Saturday.

Free West Papua! Free Tibet! Solidarity demonstrations in Aotearoa

Aotearoa, 27.03.2008 04:09

As repression against independence activists in the Chinese colony of Tibet and the Indonesian province of West Papua escalates, activists have been hitting the streets to show their solidarity with indigenous peoples struggling for self-determination and against colonialism and genocide.

In Auckland on Tuesday, activists and members of the Tibetan community shut down Helen Clark's electorate office in Mt. Eden with a noisy twelve hour blockade. Police were called to the office twice, once to remove a chain that had been used to lock the front entrance. [Report + Photos]
As protests build overseas with the start of the Olympic Torch relay, the Tibetan community will protest at the Chinese consulate in Auckland this Friday. [Details]

Also on Tuesday, activists in Poneke/Wellington paid a vist to the Indonesian Embassy to protest against the Indonesian government's occupation of West Papua, the killing of its people and the destruction of its land. At least sixteen West Papuan leaders have been rounded up on charges of rebellion and subversion. For some their only crime is raising the banned Morning Star flag of Papuan freedom. One West Papuan student is also in hospital after Indonesian soldiers opened fire on a demonstration. [ Report ] This comes the same week that the Indonesian government has approached the New Zealand police for help in implementing community policing in West Papua. [ Article ] The Wellington protest was organised in solidarity with another held outside the Indonesian embassy in Canberra and in solidarity "with those fighting for their lives and freedoms in West Papua".
