Nottingham's Old County Hall Occupied

United Kingdom, 11.04.2008 12:40

Since a few days, a group of people have occupied the Old County Hall on High Pavement as part of the international days of action for free culture and autonomous spaces. Also see feature article. The building, also known as 'the Judges' Lodgings' has both a fascinating history and is a building of outstanding beauty. So what is its history? Who's been living there over the years? And why has been sitting empty for so many years?

"For many years it was used as the Judge's Lodgings, and behind it is a really charming garden which forms an oasis of greenery which it is very difficult to see from anywhere else than the windows of the schoolrooms of Halifax Place Chapel. It is a 17th century house which was greatly altered about 1833, about which time it was purchased from the Fellows family, who had removed thither from a smaller house a little to the west. Before their time it was occupied by Lady Hutchinson, the mother of Colonel Hutchinson." That's an extract from an article on Notts History, an online collection of copyleft artilces on Nottinghamshire's vibrant history. Reading through articles about the history of the Judge's Lodgings, one thing is certain. And that is that some very high ranked individuals have lived here over the centuaries.

Oaxacan Movie Showing at the Hollywood Theater Friday

Portland, 10.04.2008 23:39

In the summer of 2006, a broad-based, non-violent, popular uprising exploded in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. Some compared it to the Paris Commune, while others called it the first Latin American revolution of the 21st century. But it was the people's use of the media that truly made history in Oaxaca.

A 90-minute documentary, A Little Bit of So Much Truth captures the
unprecedented media phenomenon that emerged when tens of thousands of
school teachers, housewives, indigenous communities, health workers,
farmers and students took 14 radio stations and one TV station into
their own hands, using them to organize, mobilize and ultimately
defend their grassroots struggle for social, cultural and economic
justice.

Zuspitzung zwischen Ecuador und Kolumbien

Germany, 10.04.2008 23:39

Days of Action for Squats and Autonomous Spaces

United Kingdom, 10.04.2008 11:39

Late last year, following a preparation and coordination meeting in the autonomous space "Les Tanneries", located in Dijon, France, there was an international call out for two days of decentralised and autonomous actions of all kinds, demonstration, direct action, public information, street-party, squatting… in defence of free spaces and for an anti-capitalist popular culture.

The aim of the days of action, Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th of April 2008, is to develop interconnections and solidarity between squats and autonomous spaces and help create more visibility for them as a european/global political movement.

Public actions are planned all over europe - in the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Serbia, Sweden, Prague and as far away as New Zealand. In Copenhagen things have already kicked off with an advance action in support of creating a new Ungdomshuset 'Youth House' took place with 5000 people taking part in a demo followed by a massive street party.

In the UK, new squats have already been opened - one in Leeds City Centre, Nottingham, and London. In Reading the Common Ground Squatted Community Garden will be re-opened, and a privatised area of the Town Centre will be reclaimed for a free cafe; Manchester is up for space invading with a demonstration, street party and much more; Nottingham will see a new squatted space opened up to host two days of food, workshops, films, discussion, zines, free jumble stalls and partying; London has a timetable of art exhibitions, squatters estate agency, skill sharing and more along with a benefit gig for the Advisory Service For Squatters.

Throughout the weekend there will be independent media coverage of actions, video and radio reports from around Europe.

She was one of dozens of government insiders and active-duty military personnel who spoke out, leaked documents, resigned, or refused to deploy in protest of illegal government actions. Nottingham Braced For Squat Actions

United Kingdom, 09.04.2008 20:38

Activists across Europe and beyond have dubbed April 11th and 12th as days of action for squats and autonomous spaces. This weekend, in Nottingham, a group of people have vowed to open up a new squatted space and put on various events. In an article published on Notts Indymedia they say: "By visibly taking a space in the city centre, we intend to raise awareness of squatting and so contribute to a future of squatting in Nottingham with more long-term squats elsewhere in the city."

One goal for the weekend of action is to "inspire and empower people" who have previously been unfamiliar with squatting. Discussing campaigns and sharing knowledge and skills we can support one another and be empowered ourselves, as well as drawing in new people by creating a vibrant and exciting place to be.

Get involved! By 12 noon this Friday, the group will publish the location of the new space on Notts Indymedia. A full program of events has already been confirmed. See program here.

GM Seeds Still Active in Soil 10 Years Later

Portland, 09.04.2008 20:08

A field planted with experimental oilseed rape a decade ago found transgenic specimens were still growing there despite intensive efforts over the years to remove the seeds, according to researchers in Sweden. This is the first time a genetically modified crop has endured so long and critics say it shows that genetically modified organisms cannot be contained once released.

"This study confirms that GM crops are difficult to confine," said Professor Mark Westoby, a plant ecologist from Macquarie University in Australia. "We should assume that GM organisms cannot be confined, and ask instead what will become of them when they escape."

A Critical Look at the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) April 8th

Portland, 08.04.2008 22:08

As the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) turns fifeen, more-and-more people are recongizing its faults and demanding a change. Unfortunately, the NAFTA agenda continues to move forward in unanticipated ways. Most Americans, including many dedicated trade activists, have yet to take a critical look at the Security and Prosperity Partnersip (SPP), which is often referred in neighboring countries as "NAFTA-plus."

In this panel discussion, a team of experts from Mexico, Canada and the United States will dissect the economic and security arrangements being forged behind closed doors under the auspices of the SPP. These backroom deals cover everything from water privatization to energy policy; homeland security to public health; transportation to immigration -- all without any real consultation with Congressional branches or the general public. This is a topic that deserves our close attention.

Once again, Harmondsworth hunger strike broken violently

United Kingdom, 08.04.2008 15:38

On Saturday, 5th April, between 5 and 6am, around 50 police in riot gear stormed the Harmondsworth immigration prison, near Heathrow, to break the detainees hunger strike to protest again the so-called fast track asylum system. They took 30 detainees away and most of them were put in solitary confinement or taken into normal prisons to prevent them from communicating with each other and the outside world. One detainee, who managed to contact supporters, said he was bruised all over his body, had injuries from handcuffs and a damaged ankle. He also reported that he saw another detainee being violently 'manhandled' by police.

The detainees' peaceful protest had started at 9am on April 1st, with mass food refusal by almost all of the detainees in the so-called immigration removal centre. Later, they also occupied the courtyard and around 120 of them remained there all night. A petition, with 116 signatures, has been sent to the European Court of Human Rights, John McDonnell MP and others (see also supporters' press release).
