Perfectly Clear, Shining Example of Climate Change Danger - Here & Now

Portland, 17.04.2008 17:39

In the past several years there have been studies showing plants flowering as much as a month early, butterflies migrating weeks later than usual, changes in the timing and location of bird migrations, tropical frog extinctions, bears in Spain no longer hibernating because there is enough food to eat all winter, tree lines moving up mountainsides and up in latitude, the line of permafrost moving north, and others. But none of these are close enough or important enough to us, personally, to make us (Americans) concerned. These are all out on the fringe of our world and simply do not affect us.

But here is an example of how we actually are being affected and will continue to be affected by the changing climate. In 1949 the southeast had a rare weather event. An out-of-season tornado developed in early February, much earlier than normal. Well, this year southern Wisconsin had a rare weather event. An F-3 tornado developed January 7th for the first time - that early in the year - in the record books that go back over 120 years.

Eric McDavid Update - New Address and Sentencing Update

Portland, 16.04.2008 13:39

Dear friends, Sentencing has been re-scheduled for May 1st. When re-scheduling the date, Eric's lawyer attempted to set it for April 24, but was unable to do so because Judge England will be getting married next week. In lieu of wedding gifts, we're asking that folks make a small donation to Eric's commissary fund to help his transition to federal prison. When he moves to a federal facility, his commissary account will move with him. If he has money in his account when he arrives, he will be able to purchase the necessities - including money for phone calls to loved ones, vegan food, and writing material. If you would like to make a donation, you can send a check or money order to "Sacramento Defense Fund" at: SPS, PO Box 163126, Sacramento, CA 95816

Yesterday Eric was moved to a different floor. His new address is:

ILWU Antiwar Shutdown of West Coast Ports on May Day is Blocked

Portland, 16.04.2008 13:39

The ILWU's planned antiwar West Coast work stoppage on international workers' rights day would have been one of the first such actions of its kind by a major American union since the Iraq war began. Plans for an unprecedented display of labor muscle on May 1 in support of the peace movement have been blocked for now, though it remains anybody's guess what might actually happen.

An estimated 25,000 longshore workers of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) were planning to take part in a May Day antiwar shutdown of all West Coast ports, including the ports of Portland and Vancouver. The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), charged with negotiating and administering maritime labor agreements with the ILWU, however, has nixed those dayshift May Day stop-work sessions.

maushard.net

comment: In summer of '01, Carlo Giulini was murdered in Genoa by carabinieri at G-8 Summit, & many many protesters were beaten half to death. Shortly after, an Italian ship docked at Port of Portland, & some of us set up a picket line outside the gates, & ILWU honored our line!

The Mumia Abu-Jamal and MOVE Nine cases both at critical stage

United States, 15.04.2008 16:37

Following the March 27 court decision denying a new guilt-phase trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal, outraged supporters are organizing a mass demonstration in Philadelphia on April 19. In May, a new book by J. Patrick O'Connor will be released, titled "The Framing of Mumia Abu-Jamal," which argues that the actual shooter of Officer Faulkner was Kenneth Freeman. O'Connor says that the local media “bought into the prosecution’s story line early on and has never been able to see this case for what it is: a framing of an innocent and peace loving man.”

As Ramona Africa reports, this week, the MOVE 9 women were interviewed by the parole board, and the men are still awaiting their interviews. Following a press conference at the PA State Capitol Building, an online petition was delivered to the Parole Board, which urged the board to grant the remaining eight MOVE prisoners parole after 30 years in prison. MOVE is asking supporters to continue contacting the board until the final decision. Local writer David Love wrote in this week's Black Commentator that the MOVE 9 "have been exemplary prisoners, and should be released. But many would argue that they should not have been imprisoned in the first place."

More than three billion people condemned to premature death from hunger and thirst

Arkansas, 15.04.2008 03:09

THAT is not an exaggerated figure, but rather a cautious one. I have meditated a lot on that in the wake of President Bush’s meeting with U.S. automobile manufacturers. The sinister idea of converting food into fuel was definitively established as an economic line in U.S. foreign policy last Monday, March 26.

Blackrose Collective Bookstore needs your support!

Portland, 14.04.2008 23:40

Your favorite radical, non-profit, all-volunteer collective bookstore needs your help!

Blackrose is an important part of the radical and anarchist communities in Portland. We're an infoshop, book and record store, radical meeting space, a resource for free clothes, and tons more. We're frequently the first place that travelers come for information. Our freecycle is a priceless resource to the low income people of North Portland, and we're an active opponent of gentrification on Mississippi Avenue.

Blackrose is in a bit of a financial crisis right now. We paid March rent a month late, and are currently unable to pay April rent. By the time we raise enough money to pay April, May will be right around the corner...

We strive to be a vibrant community resource, but the vibrant community resource business isn't too profitable. With no paid staff, all of the money we make goes to paying bills and improving our programs. Help us get back on solid ground! The turbulence we're facing is not insurmountable, and we could really use the community's help to get us back on our feet!
