Nottingham Students Organise Conference on Civil Liberties Crackdown

United Kingdom, 23.04.2008 11:08

Basic civil liberties and human rights have not fared well in the so-called "War on Terror." Using the threat of terrorism as a justification, governments across the world have introduced a raft of repressive legislation. In the UK we have witnessed crackdowns on protest and an increase in police powers, alongside a rapidly proliferating surveillance apparatus, soon to be supplemented (unless we can stop it) by a national ID database. Concerned about these and other threats, as well as a crackdown on freedom of expression at the university itself, Nottingham Student Peace Movement organised a conference addressing all these issues at the University of Nottingham on April 19.

The conference was addressed by a wide range of speakers including Liberty, the Campaign Against Criminalising Communities (CAMPACC), and Maya Evans from anti-war group Justice Not Vengeance, the first person to be prosecuted under Section 132 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 which severely restricted protest around Parliament.

Upcoming event: Showing of On The Verge, the film the police tried to ban. Portland Building, Wednesday April 23, 7pm. See article for more info.

SAW Calls for March, Rally and Direct Action Against Military Recruiters at UCSC

Santa Cruz, CA, 22.04.2008 09:39

Students Against War write, "As students of UC Santa Cruz, we oppose the presence of military recruiters on campus. As an employer that uses predatory and discriminatory practices in recruitment, recruiters directly represent the homophobic, sexist and racist ideologies that have no place in this University. Furthermore, the military's inhumane treatment of soldiers during and after tours of duty - through, for example, the neglect of the psychological and medical consequences of war - demonstrates that they view troops not as employees, but as property to be used and then discarded. It is for these reasons that on April 22nd, UCSC Students Against War will have a counter-recruitment action against the presence of military recruiters on our campus, asking them to leave our campus and never come back."

Medical Cannabis Employment Rights Bill Passes Two Assembly Committees

San Francisco Bay Area, 22.04.2008 09:39

A state medical marijuana employment rights bill is heading to the California's state Assembly. AB 2279 would protect the rights of hundreds of thousands of medical marijuana patients in California from employment discrimination. The bill, which has been passed by two Assembly committees, would reverse a January California Supreme Court decision in Ross v. RagingWire, which said that an employer may fire someone solely because they use medical marijuana outside the workplace. Assemblyman Mark Leno said, "AB 2279 is merely an affirmation of the intent of the voters and the legislature that medical marijuana patents need not be unemployed to benefit from their medicine."

Orang-utans protest at Unilever's HQ and Factory

United Kingdom, 21.04.2008 16:08

Greenpeace folk dressed as Orang-utans have climbed all over Unilever's London HQ and Merseyside factory to tell the company to stop destroying rainforests for palm oil. Palm oil is used in products like Dove and Persil, and the companies Unilever buys from are destroying valuable rainforest and peatland areas - bad news not only for the millions of people who depend on them for their way of life and endangered species such as the orang-utan, but also for the global climate.

Flat Earth NZ chapter reaches out to climate skeptics

Aotearoa, 21.04.2008 06:09

A group of climate campaigners performed some street theatre outside a talk by Australian climate sceptic Bob Carter in Auckland on Friday night. From the article: We at the Flat Earth Society have spent so many years out in the cold, shunned by Government, science and most of society. But on Friday night a glimmer of hope appeared for us in the form of the climate sceptic group, the NZ Climate Science Coalition. They were hosting a talk by the Australian climate sceptic (and stratigraphist which is about rock layering) Bob Carter, at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron in Auckland.
