About 100 Picket White House, Protest Threatened Iran War

DC, 03.08.2008 04:09

On Sat, Aug 2, an estimated 100 people turned up in Lafayette Park to protest Bush and Cheney's saber rattling towards Iran. There is real fear that Bush (perhaps at Cheney's urging) will do as his father did in Somalia, and leave his sucessor an extra war to clean up. Alternative Challengers to Globalization

NYC, 02.08.2008 17:10

All across the world, people are partaking in counter-culture communes in which they seize old abandoned buildings not only for housing needs, but also to actively protest the over-arching societal pressures created by capitalism, patriarchy, exploitation and racism.

This act of reclaiming free housing from existing vacant structures, called "squatting," has become a globalized movement, creating space for networking and making the act of day-to-day living a type of activism.

Another sad memorial wall

Portland, 02.08.2008 04:52

As we drove to Silverton today, we passed by the memorial along Highway 213 which honors Andrew Hanlon, the Irish citizen who was shot and killed by officer Tony Gonzalez early this month. The Grand Jury has since decided that Officer Gonzalez was justified in killing Hanlon. No surprise there. We are getting used to officers being exonerated after their thoughtless and deadly actions. Will we ever get used to these memorials? There were notes from Andrew's friends, declarations of solidarity and flags of Ireland fluttering in the summer breeze. I thought about Fouad Kaady, another unarmed man killed in Sandy by officers quick to pull their triggers. In Portland there have been many such deaths. Each of them has been discussed and remembered on this site. Here are pictures of this memorial so we can put a face to this most recent murder.

Cargill Blockaded Over Rainforest Destruction and Land-Grabbing

United Kingdom, 01.08.2008 12:40

Since early in the morning on 1st August, 20 participants of this year's Camp for Climate Action and members of Action Against Agrofuels successfully blockaded the only access gate to Cargill's European regional head office in Cobham, Surrey. 8 activists locked on to the gates closing the site down completely. Agrobusiness giant Cargill are being targeted by the protesters for their role in rainforest destruction and land-grabbing as well as for profiteering from the food crisis.

Hannah Ritchie from the group says: "Cargill is using the boom in agrofuels to expand soya, palm oil and sugar plantations, displacing communities, food crops and destroying ecosystems. Destroying rainforests and other biodiverse ecosystems, including healthy soils, is one of the quickest ways of heating the planet. This is why we are blockading the Cargill office two days before the official start of the Climate Camp at Kingsnorth."

Oregon Humane Society Goes Porno

Portland, 31.07.2008 06:39

While stopping in at Oregon Humane Society to adopt a new dog, I was shocked to see Playboy Playmates in the lobby. What were they doing there? Apparently they were invited to help adopt out none other than bunnies.

Now I am not a prude, but with the shelter filled with children participating in something called camp and parents bringing children in to adopt a new pet, is the Oregon Humane Society an appropriate place for member of the corporate sex industry to set up shop? Whoever chose to use Playboy Playmates, most of whom moonlight as strippers, as a PR stunt definitely isn't in tune with what a family oriented organization is. I am saddened by this.
