News from Indymedia: Hardware is returned, but many questions remain

DC, 14.10.2004 21:20

On Wednesday, October 13th, Indymedia's seized hardware was mysteriously returned in the same way it disappeared -- without any information provided as to who took it or why, and on whose orders. An employee at Rackspace, the U.S.-based web hosting company that handed over Indymedia's disks to the U.S. government on 7 October, emailed an Indymedia volunteer to say that the disks were returned and that "the court order is being complied with... I will pass along any more information that becomes available and that I am allowed to."

HOTEL WORKER NEGOTIATIONS RESUME

DC, 14.10.2004 19:09

Negotiations between UNITE HERE Local 25 and the DC Hotel Association are scheduled for today, but with only one session a week, progress has been slow and the and the workers and management remain far apart on key issues. Meanwhile, the union is asking customers who support the demands of the hotel workers to move their business to union hotels that have signed a special agreement making them safe from the current labor dispute. Several allies, including the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Get Active conference have already cancelled or moved events. If you know of an organization planning an event at one of the hotels in negotiations, contact Jennifer Shaw at 202-737-2225 ext. 661.

Indymedia Servers Returned; Nearly All Questions Remain Unanswered

NYC, 14.10.2004 15:00

Swiss Attorney General: "We had nothing to do with it." (Denials all Around)

October 13-- A Rackspace employee stated via email, "I was just told that the court order is being complied with and your servers in London will be online at 5pm GMT. I will pass along anymore information that becomes available and that I am allowed to."

It has been verified that the returned hard-drives are the originals, but the circumstances of the seizure still remain unclear. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, "who took them, why, and under what authority? Citing a gag order, Rackspace would not comment on what had happened both in the original seizure of the servers or their return. All that is known at this point is that the subpoena that resulted in the seizure was issued at the request of a foreign government, most likely with the assistance of the United States Attorney's Office in San Antonio. Although initial reports suggested that the FBI had taken the servers, the FBI has now denied any involvement."

The hard-drives will be treated as "hacked" (compromised) and as a result there will be delays in restoring the sites that are still down.

Latinos March for Dignity in Doraville, GA

Tennessee, 14.10.2004 02:35

On Tuesday over one thousand Latinos and their supporters held the second annual March for Dignity. The demands of the march were for drivers licenses for immigrants, an end to raids and deportations, and civil rights for undocumented workers... Counter-protestors distributed literature proclaiming the march a vast communist conspiracy. The sight of these virulent racists carrying flags and other Americana, along with signs demanding that the rule of law be upheld, was a poignant reminder of why I became an anarchist... Upon trying to leave, we learned that "for security”, we could only leave the area in buses provided for that purpose...

Global Indymedia Drives Returned

San Diego, 13.10.2004 23:18

From Rackspace: We received the drives for these servers back this morning, they are currently in the servers.

Earlier I had received this from an @yahoo address (which I couldn’t verify as legit until I got the above):

Jeff: I know that you have gone through more than I can possibly understand. I was just told that the court order is being complied with and your servers in London will be online at 5pm GMT.

“The FBI can’t pull the plug on more than 20 news websites – our modern printing presses – based on a secret proceeding at the request of a foreign government. This is a flagrant violation of the First Amendment,” said Kevin Bankston, EFF attorney and Equal Justice Works/Bruce J. Ennis Fellow. “As far as the Constitution is concerned, Indymedia has the same rights as any other news publisher. The government can’t shut down the New York Times, and it can’t shut down Indymedia.”

New Wave of Violent Repression in Haiti - Please Help

Santa Cruz, CA, 13.10.2004 20:18

A massive, violent upsurge in repression has occured in Haiti during the past four days, aimed at silencing the Lavalas movement and supporters of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in Haiti. On Thursday September 30, Haitian police fired upon thousands of unarmed demonstrators who called for the return of constitutional order. On Saturday October 2, police surrounded a private radio station where three leading Lavalas parliamentarians had denounced the violence on the air. After a six hour standoff, police stormed the building and arrested them without warrant. Dozens of other Lavalas activists have been illegally arrested in the past few days, and the police have conducted raids on the populous neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince, which are the backbone of the Lavalas movement. Bel Air, located in the center of the city, is under virtual siege.

On Friday October 15th, from 6:30 to 8:30pm at United Presbyterian Church, 112 E. Beach St. in Watsonville, the Haiti Action Committee will present information gathered on a recent trip to Haiti. They will discuss the recent human rights abuses occurring there, as well as the potential for resistance and democracy taking place again in Haiti.

They will also be in Santa Cruz on Saturday October 16th, from 11am to 1pm at the Resource Center for Nonviolence.

Anti-Corporate Victory in Lee, as Water Privatization Defeated

Boston, 13.10.2004 19:50

Water and anti-privatization activists recently stopped a bid from the European Multi-National Veolia Environment (working with former local Democratic Party State Rep.) to privatize the water system. The issue of water privatization in Lee actually arrived through the backdoor. Originally the discussion on the table was about the need in Lee for an upgrade of the town’s sewer system. But pushed by former Democratic Party State Rep. Christopher Hogkins, the town moved towards a proposal that included the design, build, and operation (DBO) of a new Water Plant. With relatively no public discussion about the ramifications associated with privatizing out the services to a multi-national corporation, and with almost absurd levels of conflict of interests (or at the very least revolving door politics), the town received only one bid, from Veloia Water. Quite a coincidence since Christopher Hogkins the former State Rep from Lee is now a Vice-President and General Manager for the company. (The parent company of this entity is Veolia Environment based in Paris, France.)

FBI neemt Indymediaserver in beslag

Netherlands, 13.10.2004 19:30
