Police Brutalize Handicapped Citizens Challenging Policymakers on Housing Crisis

DC, 16.09.2008 17:10

Washington, D.C. — ADAPT wasted no time challenging multiple policymakers on the housing crisis for persons with disabilities who have low and extremely low incomes. After setting up a tent city at HUD headquarters just after 4 a.m., ADAPT sent 100 activists to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) offices in Washington, D.C., and another hundred to a Sen. John McCain campaign office in Arlington, VA. All three entities were presented with the ADAPT platform for affordable, accessible housing…

Birmingham School rejects ARK as Academy sponsor

United Kingdom, 15.09.2008 23:39

The Governing Body and the Head Teacher at Harborne Hill School, Birmingham, have rejected Absolute Return for Kids (ARK), the controversial sponsors of the proposed Harborne Academy, from taking over their school.

The Governing Body unanimously voted to stop ARK after it emerged that they were intent on destroying vital educational ties with local partnerships and organisations built up by the school over years. They were also shocked to find out that, despite Birmingham City Council saying that staff terms and conditions were ‘sacrosanct’, ARK refused to give any meaningful guarantees to their prospective employees. This means that ARK can refuse to acknowledge unions or any national agreements on pay and conditions. Their short track history so far has shown their contempt for their employees.

According to the U.S. Border Patrol, it has a jurisdiction of about 100 miles from the border. This puts most of Washington state in an area where border checkpoints are authorized, including Seattle.

More than three billion people condemned to premature death from hunger and thirst

Arkansas, 15.09.2008 01:45

THAT is not an exaggerated figure, but rather a cautious one. I have meditated a lot on that in the wake of President Bush’s meeting with U.S. automobile manufacturers. The sinister idea of converting food into fuel was definitively established as an economic line in U.S. foreign policy last Monday, March 26.

Scenes from the RNC - Reportback from Minnesota

Portland, 13.09.2008 21:38

Less than two weeks ago, I spent several evenings in a row listening to people getting tear-gassed, reading reports of torture, viewing scenes of senseless brutality and thinking, "This is America's heartland."

During the RNC in St Paul, Minnesota, the police basically had carte-blanche to enact any terror they saw fit on the public in order to keep them from interfering with the meeting of the powers that be. More than 800 people were arrested during those few days. They and many many more suffered multiple abuses from the police including being tear-gassed, pepper-sprayed, tased, beaten, tortured, shot with rubber bullets, attacked with concussion grenades, suppressed and generally harassed. The vast majority of arrests were for such trumped-upped charges as 'Conspiracy to Riot' and other bogus charges ranging from misdemeanors to felonies.

Vobro kills: Protest at Brodnica against young worker death cover-up

Torun, 13.09.2008 17:37

image 6267

On the 16th of April 2008 in the Vobro sweet factory in Brodnica, 21 year old Krzysztof Pruszewicz died in a work accident. Despite numerous claimed deviations and obvious violations of labor rights by the employer, the prosecutor didn’t claim that anyone was guilty and chose not to carry out any investigations. The deceased’s family has made a legal complaint about this. On 11 September 2008, the Regional Court in Brodnica considered the complaint.

At yesterday’s event many other local and national media were present. The prosecutor clearly spoke from the point of view of defending the employer. The Court did not take a final decision. The next sitting about the case will occur later in September.
