Filipino Migrants Question ANZ Bank's Ethics

Aotearoa, 05.10.2008 05:10

A group of Filipino workers is backing the Finsec union in its opposition to staff reductions at the ANZ bank. Migrante Aotearoa, an Auckland based migrant Filipino worker organisation says ANZ’s treatment of its loyal workforce is deplorable but totally in line with its behaviour in the global arena. Mr Maga says the bank is a large shareholder in the Oceana Didipio gold – copper mining project in the Phillipines which has caused widespread community displacement, human rights violations, economic dislocation, environmental devastation and social disputes in the national minority communities in Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya. “In New Zealand ANZ is preparing to throw hundreds of employees out of work. In the Phillipines the very same bank has investments in large scale mining that threatens poor peasants and indigenous peoples with eviction from their ancestral lands. NYC, 05.10.2008 02:09

While hundreds gathered to welcome the return of the USS Intrepid to its Manhattan pier on October 2, not everyone present was there to celebrate. More than a dozen peace activists carried banners and leafleted along the waterfront to protest what one demonstrator called “an obscene monument to war.”

6 strikes on SuperFriday -McDonald's workers mobilise

Aotearoa, 04.10.2008 23:41

There were six strikes by McDonald's workers today! Avondale and Henderson union members took action at midday, closely followed by Frankton (Hamilton), where 30 workers walked, leaving the store to be staffed only by managers bussed in from Auckland. Hot on the heels of these actions Airport Drivethrough walked off and after scuffles with police on airport property travelled to Mangere Town Centre McDonald's where members walked out. Studie zu EU und NATO Sicherheitspolitik

Germany, 04.10.2008 22:10

Self Determination & Community Rights Defense In Oaxaca & Beyond

Portland, 03.10.2008 18:38

Simón Sedillo is a community based human rights film-maker whose work has centered on placing skills, cameras and editing equipment in the hands of communities in resistance so that they may be able to document their own histories and human rights situation. Sedillo has spent the last 6 years documenting and teaching community based video documentation in indigenous communities in Oaxaca, in immigrant communities in the US, and with youth of color across the US.

Today Sedillo shares some experiences and perspective for international audiences in the US and Europe, on the local and global implications of the Oaxacan people's struggle. Through lectures, workshops, and screenings Sedillo helps open a powerful space for dialogue on the effects of neoliberalism on indigenous communities in Oaxaca, immigrant communities around the world, and communities of color in the US. Through collaborative media projects, Sedillo's work has contributed to a growing network of community based media activism whose primary objective is to share, teach, and learn from one another, about popular community based resistance and the collective construction of horizontal networks of popular power.

Sedillo is currently on tour screening short film segments from oaxaca and presenting workshops on the following topics.

-Neoliberalism 101
-From Militarism to Paramilitarism
-Mesoamerican Indigenous Principles of Unity and Resistance
-Challenging International Solidarity: Alternative Media, Human Right's, and Self-determination
-The commodification of sustainability and resistance

McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

Aotearoa, 02.10.2008 06:10

Joe talks to Unite Union organiser and Socialist Aotearoa member Kathryn Tucker from the picket lines in Waikato as the McDonald's strikes spread south. Kathryn, could you tell us a bit about the mood of the fastfood workers in Hamilton? They are frustrated by McD's response to their claims. McDonalds have said that they won't get back to us with an offer until sometime in November. It has been 6 months since our collective expired. The 25 cents that was offered is seen as a bit of a joke. 25 cents an hour is an insult. Are the stores in Hamilton owned by the company, or franchisees? Company owned. Outside in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato, the stores are franchisees. [More]

Update and Letter from Eric McDavid

Portland, 02.10.2008 02:08

Update on Eric's situation in Victorville, and a letter from Eric
Dear friends,

Our apologies for taking so long to get this to you...

First of all, we would like to thank everyone who helped us with the tour during the past month. It was an amazing success, and it would not have been possible without all of your support. Finally getting to meet so many folks who have been working for Eric these past few years was inspiring and rejuvenating in more ways than you know. Our deepest, most heartfelt thanks to all of you.

For those of you who don't already know, we learned earlier this month that Eric received an "infraction" for "unpermitted contact with the media." This apparently stems from a phone call Eric made to his family's home during which he spoke with a journalist who was at the house. Leaving aside the inherent absurdity of the charge itself, the ramifications for Eric have been quite real. His phone and email access were immediately cut off, leaving him with no real ties to the outside world other than letters (which can sometimes take weeks to reach their destination) and visits. This has been difficult for him and his loved ones, to say the least. Unfortunately, he will be without phone and email indefinitely. It could take weeks for the issue to be resolved, and even afterwards there is no guarantee that he will regain access to either of these "privileges." We will keep you updated as things progress.

Fenty's Homeless Report Assumes Franklin Shelter Residents Will Already Be on the Street

DC, 01.10.2008 23:11

Mayor Fenty's office submitted a report about the recent Housing First push to get homeless folks supportive housing per the directive of a recent Emergency law passed by the City Council. The report was submitted one minute past the deadline. By the numbers in the Fenty's report, he says he has placed 86 men from Franklin into permanent supportive housing. This means at least 214 men, previously housed in Franklin Shelter's 300 beds, are now without shelter or housed at other overcrowded shelters. Of course the numbers are quite larger, as testimony has elicited that at least 1000 different people used Franklin Shelter every three months, with men cycling in and out as needed.

Fred Meyer and Hate-Mongering in the Oregonian

Portland, 01.10.2008 15:39

Here is the email I just sent Fred Meyer: You heavily advertise in the Oregonian, a Portland daily paper. On 9-28-08, the publisher of the Oregonian distributed with the paper a DVD titled 'Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West.' This DVD is generally regarded to be a bigoted and untruthful piece of hate-mongering, designed to inflame public opinion against Muslims world-wide. Less that a week after this disk was distributed in Dayton, Ohio, unknown persons attacked an Islamic community center by releasing noxious vapors, burning to the eyes and nose, into the child care room.
