Free Speech Victory for Activist Group

Atlanta, 18.10.2004 14:44

#media_7101;right# On Friday, October 15, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals issued a groundbreaking ruling upholding the constitutional rights of free speech, freedom of assembly and freedom from unlawful search and seizure.
In a unanimous decision, the court ruled that the search policy instituted by the Columbus City Police before the November 2002 SOA Watch vigil violates the First and Fourth Amendments to the Constitution and that protesters may not be required to pass through metal detectors to enter the rally site this November.

Jacksonville: What Really Happened

Rogue Valley, 18.10.2004 14:22

Media reports on the October 14th demonstration in Jacksonville have been full of inaccuracies and misleading statements by police and Jacksonville officials. I was one of the organizers for the demonstration in Jacksonville and would like to set the record straight.

In planning the event, I spoke three times with the Chief of Police in Jacksonville and once with the Sheriff so they knew exactly what we were planning and we could safely exercise our First Amendment rights. The Chief said he was primarily concerned about hostile conservatives hassling us. The Sheriff 's last words to me were: "If everyone stays on the sidewalk, we won't have any problems."

From Occupied West Bank: Settler Attack

DC, 18.10.2004 11:05

[Children from four small Palestinian villages walk to a central school in the village of al-Tuwani. Because settlers have harassed the children since school began in September, and the Israeli police would not intervene to prevent the attacks, the villagers have sought the protection of international accompaniment. A coalition comprising Christian Peacemaker Teams, the Israeli group Tayush and members of Operation Dove, (an Italian Christian organization that undertakes accompaniment work similar to CPT's work), set up a presence in the village of al-Tuwani beginning on September 12, 2004....these organizations witnessed settler attacks on children each time they made exploratory visits to the area.] A few minutes after we entered into the settlement area, the girls next to me started to scream. I looked up and saw a man dressed in black swinging a chain coming out of the trees about thirty feet ahead. He had on a black face mask that looked like two scarves, one over the bottom half of his face and one over his forehead, leaving a slit for his eyes. The girls immediately turned around and started running back toward Tuba, and I followed them. Just as we reached Chris and the boys, at least four other men emerged from the trees similarly dressed. The children continued to run toward Tuba, and Chris started yelling, "Don't hurt the children, don't hurt the children!" It seemed that Chris and I were their targets, because they headed straight for us and let the children go.

Londen gaststad derde Europese Sociaal Forum

Netherlands, 18.10.2004 02:50

Republican front group "People of Color United" unleashes new ad in Detroit

The right-wing "People of Color United" just distributed its latest installment of the "Election News" to the houses on my street in Detroit. It also blasts Kerry and Democrats for taking African- American's for granted. In one instance using a quote from Jesse Jackson.

Call to Action: Stop Government Repression of Indymedia

Michigan, 17.10.2004 18:03

On 7 October, 2004, hard drives from two Indymedia servers were seized from the London office of a U.S.-owned web hosting company, Rackspace, at the request of the U.S. Justice Department, apparently in collaboration with Italian and Swiss authorities. The seizure of the hard drives in London shut down an Indymedia radio station and around 20 different Indymedia websites from Ambazonia to the U.K. Thousands of individuals who posted hundreds of thousands of articles on these web sites suddenly found their voices silenced by an unknown hand. Although the hard drives were returned on 13 October, the legal framework under which the seizures took place is unknown. Nine days after the seizures there is still an almost total information blackout from the authorities in the U.S., U.K., Italy, and Switzerland. Indymedia still has no confirmation of who ordered the seizures, who took the hard drives, why the seizures took place, or whether it will happen again.

The two servers recently seized by US Authorities were returned yesterday morning to Rackspace (the hosting service where the servers were first taken from). Indymedia is now weighing additional legal options after this illegal seizure of its servers. Many of the original questions still remain.

Afghanistan holds its breath

United Kingdom, 17.10.2004 15:58

Update 10 Oct:
"The Taliban did not need to disrupt the elections; the UN managed it for them [...] Instead of bombs there could easily be a riot."

[ Afghan Election Mess ]

As the 9th October presidential elections draw near, many people
in Afghanistan are anticipating violence and electoral fraud.
Already there have been reports of intimidation and vote-rigging.

With aid being manipulated for political ends, 20'000 US troops
still (illegally) remaining in the country, powerful warlords
and commanders abusing people with impunity in many areas and
various armed groups trying to prevent the elections, Afghanistan
is fast becoming an even more dangerous place to be, and
lots of internationals are leaving the country ahead of this weekend.

"There is no difference between the forces of the Taliban and
the Mujahidin and all the others who carry guns. Only the faces
and the clothes have changed," -a man from Herati

It seems that the US is pushing hard for a victory for Hamid Karzai,
with Bush in need of a media coup in time for his own elections in
the US. Hence the attempts to engineer something that can be spun
as a 'democratic success', whatever the human cost.

Boston, 17.10.2004 08:54

Sara Terry’s photo project, “Aftermath: Bosnia’s Long Road to Peace” is currently on display in the Babst Library at Boston College. Terry, a former staff-writer for the Christian Science Monitor, first flew to Bosnia back in 2000 after being discouraged by the Western media’s lack of interest in the re-stabilization of Bosnia as people began to return to their villages and to their normal lives. All too often when war and atrocities occur, photojournalists are there to capture events but leave as soon as the big action is over. This is what makes Terry's documentation so unique.

World Anti McDonalds Day action round up

Aotearoa, 17.10.2004 04:33

The 20th annual worldwide Anti-McDonald's Day was celebrated on Saturday with rolling protests in Wellington and Christchurch.

Christchurch activists staged demonstrations at six different McDonalds' stores. Protesters entered the buildings distributing leaflets and chanting slogans like 'McDonalds munchers: spew up your lunches!'. At one McDonalds management resorted to free giveaways in an attempt to entice customers into their empty store.

McDonalds stores were also visited in Wellington. Protestors concerned with animal cruelty, environmental devastation and workers rights made loud appearances both inside and outside the Manners Mall store.

In Dunedin there has been ongoing pickets and campaign against McDonalds employment record. Protesters maintain three teenage workers were forced into resigning after becoming pregnant, and another was illegally strip searched.

Is it too hopeful a plea to come together in our quest for (revolutionary) lives that realize that place and time, and love and hope have all been under attack since the rise of the empire and subsequent developement of nation states? In the name of humanity we should develop and further some of our understanding of the world as it is and could be, together. Always broadening what "together" implies. You might say “Oh, the Naivety” but, I refuse to believe we can not uncover and nurture new talents at oration and organizing skills that will allow us to continue to, or begin to keep going out on these voyages. Have vision I say. I would rather suffer it being blurry with possibilities for correction, than allow for cynicism and overwhelming feelings of helplessness to control me. I think we will find what we are looking for. Can you say clearly what you are looking for?

'Statement regarding Justin Barrett debate at UCD on 13th October 2004'

Ireland, 16.10.2004 18:55

AFA Action At UCD Debate Sparks An Ongoing Debate on 'No Platform' Issue On Wednesday 13th October, Justin Barrett, a man with links to European fascist organisations was prevented from speaking at a debate on racism in UCD. From The Newswire: "Anti Fascist Action (AFA) wishes to state that we are the organisation which prevented the fascist Justin Barrett from speaking at an 'Immigration Debate' in University College Dublin last night. A number of other people attending the event also joined us in preventing a platform being granted to Barrett. AFA has a policy of 'No Platform' for fascists, which means that anyone attempting to organise fascist or racist political groups will not be permitted to do so. We believe in political and ideological opposition to the far right, and have been active in Ireland for the past 12 years. The 'No Platform' policy relates to ANYWHERE fascists may attempt to organise or spread their repugnant views. It is quite humourous to hear spokespeople for debating societies attempting to claim UCD as an ideological asylum where the likes of Justin Barrett can claim sanctuary. This is not the case. We would also like to clarify regarding a young male member of the audience who spoke at the end and claimed he was an innocent student who had been assaulted. As a result of AFA monitoring and information received over several years we know for a fact that this bonehead is a member of a 'National Socialist Black Metal' band calling itself 'Ketzer'. He is a frequent contributor to the openly Nazi 'Stormfront' website."
