Authentic RESISTANCE – Northwest Winter Soldier Portland

Portland, 21.10.2008 19:39

This "Winter Soldier" thing was modeled after a tool developed during the rise of the Vietnam protests of the 60s/ 70s. When will this stuff die? It seems a heaviness of heart is generated when we step onto the go-back-machine, i.e. the latest that I'm aware of -- Recreate 68 - yawn, mumble grumble.

Contrary to my preconceptions about Winter Soldier, it is a beyond profound movement. This is where the resistance resides, an invisible undercurrent of humans of all kinds infecting this society with slow intensity. The first Neo-Winter-Soldier event took place in Silver Spring, Maryland, March 13 to March 16, 2008, timed to highlight the 5th anniversary of the 2003 invasion.

REPORT-BACK

Some 200/300 people showed up. Many elderly, a definite lack in youth presence. First panel - on stage - there we saw youth.

Amongst the shattered humans on that panel, nine men, as different from one another as can be imagined - a display of the beauty of humanity right there. Each brought their story, their confessions, their way of talking, seeing, feeling - straight shooters. Nothing but being there, in the flesh, can enable a person to grasp the enormity of the all-encompassing spectacle of war; we gotta own it, our wars. Radio, television, any intermediary form is an obstruction to the process of learning with something like this.

Background, I believe that all but one fellow on the panel was seventeen or eighteen years of age when they joined the services, including National Guard. Below, I've provided a few bits, from just a few people.

Daniel Koller DVM, Veterinary License is SUSPENDED!

Portland, 21.10.2008 18:39

Many people have had tragic stories when they have taken their beloved pets to Dr. Daniel Koller at Companion Pet Clinic on 3150 NE 82nd Avenue. We have heard a lot of these stories right here on Indymedia. This is an update for all the people who have wished Daniel "God" Koller would get his license revoked. Yes, he legally changed his middle name to God. This is also to inform the public about Dr. Daniel Koller and Companion Pet Clinic on 82nd ave. Also, Daniel Koller is not the only veterinarian that can not be trusted with an animal. When you take your pet to the vet, make sure you have done some reseach on the vet and to also be with your pet AT ALL TIMES! If they won't let you go in the back room with your pet, be suspicious and take the animal somewhere else.

Daniel G. Koller, a licensed attorney in the state of California, who owns and operates Companion Pet Clinic on Northeast 82nd ave has had his Veterinarian license suspended by the Oregon Veterinary Board which also plans to take away his license for good. Daniel Koller has a long history of drug abuse, violating state laws, and abusing/killing animals which dates back to 1977.

DEMONSTRACJA I PRZEJMOWANIE DOMÓW W OSLO

Poland, 21.10.2008 15:40

Ground Noice and Static: Video Report on the DNC and RNC Protests of 2008

Boston, 20.10.2008 22:08

In November, one or the other of the corporate candidates will win, and then, as always, it will be what the people do, not the politicians, that counts. This video report on the protests that occurred in connection with the Democrat and Republican National Conventions, Ground Noise & Static is a manifesto. "We went to Denver and St. Paul to take the pulse of the movement. Corporate media would cover the platitudes and posturing of the politicians, we were interested in something else, a story hidden in plain sight, captured in the now-classic street chant, 'This is what democracy looks like.'" Bühl zwischen Repression und Solidarität

Germany, 20.10.2008 20:09

Kein Tag ohne - AZ-Woche in Heidelberg

Germany, 20.10.2008 19:39

Heidelberg (AMK-rn). Vom 28.

Local leaders hold a dialogue with elected officials on Welcoming MA initiative to reaffirm respect for immigrants

Boston, 20.10.2008 15:08

Somerville, MA. Community Organizations, local businesses and communities of faith held a dialogue with elected officials in Somerville as part of a week of action to promote the Welcoming MA campaign. This campaign is a statewide initiative to affirm Massachusetts as a Commonwealth that welcomes and respects the dignity of all people. There will be more than thirty actions and events happening all over the state in support of the Welcoming, MA Campaign. "This Campaign is really about saying we want to have a civil dialogue about issues that relate to our immigrant friends and neighbors, and not resort to name-calling and stereotyping," said Danny LeBlanc, CEO of the Somerville Community Corporation. "I believe that those of us born in the U.S. have at least that minimum obligation with respect to how we treat newcomers to our country," stated LeBlanc.

Activists Disrupt Biofuels Conference

United Kingdom, 19.10.2008 11:08

Climate activists marked World Food Day by brining the European Biofuels Expo and Conference taking place at Newark Showground to a standstill. Several campaigners successfully scaled the roof of the building at the Newark Showground, dropping large banners inside the conference hall whilst others set off multiple rape alarms inside the centre in protest at what they see as the rape of the planet that Agrofuels are causing.

Their action against the Expo, dubbed by campaigners as the ‘Newark Exposé’, was staged to protest against the ‘greenwash’ that Biofuels can be sustainable and are good for the environment. John Simmons, from the roof of the Newark building, said "It is unacceptable that the Biofuels industry, which is responsible for large-scale rainforest destruction, evictions of communities, hunger and accelerated climate change hold conferences where they portray themselves as ‘green’."

Local GOP Hack Warns: 'Beware My Brothers and Sisters of the White Oppressor on Voting Day'

NOTE: This article has got to be, hands down, the most ham-handed, clumsiest, flat-out st00pidest attempt by a GOP operative or some other white power entity, to frighten African and Latino citizens out of voting, seen in any recent election. A variation on the time-honored classic If You Try To Vote You'll Be Arrested, it almost sounds 'militant', until you get to the bit about the mobile police command posts. Read for yourself.

Local Media Used to Print False Accusations Against Human Right Activists

San Francisco Bay Area, 19.10.2008 03:39

In the past few weeks, activists in the UC Berkeley area have engaged in correcting pro-Israel propaganda. On the night of September 18, however, someone added an image of a Swastika, an equal sign and a Star of David, to an already stenciled ad that carried the massage "free Palestine". Zionists groups have seized the moment and used the graffiti for the political agenda of creating an atmosphere of fear, in order to silence critics of Apartheid. Additionally, local media outlets have reported on the hate speech graffiti and some have printed false accusations against Palestinian solidarity groups on Campus.

Red & Black Cafe Seeks Low Interest Loans

Portland, 19.10.2008 01:39

The Red and Black Cafe is thriving one year after being forced out of our old location, and business is getting better every month! However, we reopened on a shoestring budget and we are still recovering from the costs associated with our move. We are also preparing for increased payroll expenses with Oregon minimum wage goes up in January!
Dear friends of the Red & Black Cafe,

We are pleased to announce that the Red & Black Cafe (a worker-owned, collectively-managed cafe and community space) is surviving and thriving 1 year after being forced out of our old location on SE Division.

We reopened at 400 SE 12th Avenue in January, and over the last 9 months we have sold untold amounts of coffee and black dragon noodles, acquired a beer & wine license and a brand new beer cooler (check out our selection of local microbrews!), and hosted lots of film screenings, music shows, and benefits for community organizations.

With each passing month, business has improved. We feel confidant that we will be able to provide empowering jobs, delicious vegan food, and a welcoming community space for years to come.

However, we are facing a few financial hurdles. We re-opened on a shoestring budget and we are still recovering from the costs of renovating and equipping our new space and renewing our licenses.

Also, Oregon minimum wage is going up by .45 per hour in January! On behalf of all low-wage workers in the state we celebrate the increase. Unfortunately, this will also increase our payroll expenses. Ultimately we hope to provide living wage jobs, but we are still struggling to balance this goal with our mission of providing ethical, high-quality food at working class prices.

1500 Mink Released From fur farm in Astoria; 3rd Oregon Farm Raided This Year

Portland, 18.10.2008 04:43

Operation Bite Back II: 1500 More Captive Mink Released
Raid on Oregon Fur Farm by Animal Liberationists is Seventh Since April
Astoria, Oregon - According to a communique received by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, 1500 captive mink were released last night from a fur farm on Simonsen Road in Astoria, Oregon. The raid is the third in Oregon this year, and the seventh in North America this season. Together with raids in Washington, Utah and Canada reported since April, thousands of captive wild animals have been given the chance for freedom this year from profit-hungry breeders.

The communique reads, in part:
"About 1,500 mink were released from their cages with at least 200 of these being breeding stock. The fact that there is no fence around this farm should help ease their escape. I would like to close by offering apiece of advice to the owners of this farm, to the owners of the other farms in the Astoria, OR area (it was simply by luck of the draw that your farms weren't chosen), and to ALL fur farmers: find a new profession. fur farmers are a dying breed. get out before you are forced out. "your laws will have no meaning past the setting of the sun."

Imprisoned in cages for life, fur-bearing animals are forced to endure intensive confinement, compared to the miles of territory these animals would enjoy in the wild - their natural state. The natural instincts of these captive animals are completely frustrated; self-mutilation, sickness, infection, poor sanitation and the sheer stress of confinement lead animals to premature death. When they survive, animals of sufficient size are killed by anal electrocution or gassing, then skinned. Whereas reports from the fur industry have surfaced that liberations were harmful to the animals, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and other organizations have a long history of successfully releasing animals into the wild. In addition to liberating the wild animals destined for a certain, painful and agonizing death, another goal of liberationists is to cause economic damage to fur farms; dozens of fur farming operations have seen economic ruin since "Operation Bite Back" began by the ALF in the 1990s.
