Anti-fascists confront Nationalist Alliance in Wellington

Aotearoa, 25.10.2008 02:41

Anti-fascist activists gathered at the Cenotaph in Wellington this morning in opposition to the Nationalist Alliance, a coalition comprising white-supremacist groups the National Front, New Right and the National Democrats. A banner was hung from the Cenotaph ("No racism - Anti-Fascist Action") as around 65 anti-fascists danced and held the Cenotaph as a fascist free space, removing a fascist photographer from the New Right from the area. Around 40 showed up at 11.30am and were escorted by police up Molesworth Street to Parliament grounds closely followed by anti-fascists. "More hair than brains", "No room for racism" and "Hey hey, ho ho, your racism has got to go" were chanted, drowning out all the speeches by the fascists. Jim Saleam, who served time in jail for firebombing a Brisbane bookshop and organising a shotgun attack against a representative of the African National Congress, Steve Larsen from the New Right and Kyle Chapman all attempted to give speeches - without success. The fascists retreated after about 30 mins and were chased to the train station by anti-fascist activists. Bagels were thrown at them while they were protected by a police line. Two antifa were arrested by police at that point. Following a scuffle, some anti-fascists went to the train station, just in time for 3 fascists to emerge. They were chased across Bunny Street and again had bagels thrown at them. They were protected by a lone cop who tried (and failed) to arrest an antifa, while frantically calling for back-up. All the anti-fascists managed to get away safely and went to the police station, waiting for their comrades to be released. TROY DAVIS gets another stay of execution

DC, 25.10.2008 02:10

A day after a rally on Howard University caused a ruckus on campus and a campaign to boycott Coca Cola and Delta Airlines to save Troy davis from 'State-Sponsored lynching in Georgia', Death Penalty Focus wrote us: "Today we received the wonderful news that Georgia death row prisoner Troy Davis has received a stay of execution! Davis had been scheduled for execution on Monday, October 27th. We have included an article about this great development below." This came just after hundreds of signature demanding from the State Board of Paroles to stop the execution of Troy Davis were gathered on campus, and a campaign to boycott Coca Cola and Delta Airlines who make their money down in Georgia called by the Nat Turner Rebellion that day got picked up by the Black August Planning Committee, Political Education Action Committee, a.s.w.e.r. coalition and Kuame Ture Society.

FARMVILLE REFUSES PUBLIC MEETING ABOUT IMMIGRANT DETENTION CENTER

DC, 24.10.2008 19:10

In response to the refusal by the Farmville, VA city government for a public meeting with community organizations about plans for a 1,040 bed immigrant detention facility, lawyers for the groups are preparing a Freedom of Information Act request. The groups are asking for information about media access to the proposed facility, the financial arrangements between ICA and the town of Farmville, the experience and qualifications of ICA to manage an incarceration facility and other topics. Virginia-based groups including The People United and The Virginia Organizing Project are troubled by the agreement between ICE, the City of Farmville, and a private corporation, ICA Farmville, that has no experience in managing correctional facilities. If the $21 million facility runs at 85% capacity, ICA stands to gross over $20 million in federal tax dollars annually.

Grim reapers target careers fair

United Kingdom, 24.10.2008 08:39

Students at the University of Nottingham protested "unethical career corporatism" at the university's careers fair on Monday and Tuesday. Dressed as grim reapers, students payed a visit to arms dealers BAE Systems, Rolls Royce and Qinetiq, as well as energy giants E.On and BP. Leaflets detailing the crimes of some of the companies were hounded out and the protesters even had a stall next to the Army's stall.

The protesters aimed to highlight the hypocrisy of organisers, AIESEC, who claim to embody "Peace and fulfillment of humankind's potential" whilst giving a platform to arms dealers, as well as to "oppose the general presence of mechanisms of the capitalist death machine." Their success was highlighted by the noteable absence of several targetted companies on the second day of the fair.

Protest police spying - Chesapeake Climate Action group

DC, 23.10.2008 20:10

Since 2001, I have devoted my life entirely to the peaceful promotion of windmills and solar panels to solve global warming. Apparently not everyone liked my work, however. Believe it or not, the Maryland State Police - your state police - put my name in their criminal intelligence database as a "suspected terrorist" as part of their larger program of collecting information about political activists in 2005-2006. About one third of the entire Maryland CCAN staff - one of the largest environmental groups in the state - was officially spied on by the police while we peacefully promoted clean electricity and clean cars for Maryland.

Hmong Gardeners Threatened With Eviction

San Francisco Bay Area, 23.10.2008 07:39

A group of Hmong gardeners and their allies are fighting an attempt by the City of Fresno to evict them from plots they have farmed for 13 years. The Hmong Community Garden provides food for 300 members of the Hmong community. The city seeks to replace the garden with a police substation, and city officials have recently claimed that an agreement was reached to relocate the gardeners. The gardeners denied that they agreed to be relocated, and a spokesperson accused the city of using wrongful translation to take advantage of the gardeners.

Only 13 Days Left to Stop Prison Expansion Measures

Portland, 23.10.2008 01:08

There are only 13 days left (including today) to stop Measures 61 and 57, both of which will build more prisons in Oregon. Please print out these fliers and put them up!

Measure 61 establishes mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent property and drug-related crimes. It will put thousands of people in prison, many for first-time offenses. Measure 61 will especially impact women, particularly low-income women and women of color. It will require building 4 new prisons, in a state that already spends more money on incarceration than on higher education.

Measure 61 will make it harder for people who use drugs to access treatment. It will decimate families. It will further criminalize those of us who break the law in order to survive. The U.S. prison system has been growing exponentially for decades, and it is making us less safe, not more.

Measure 57 is intended to be a less severe replacement for 61 - whichever passes with more votes will go into effect. However, it will increase sentencing, require more prison construction, and incarcerate about 1000 people. Sacrificing 1000 people is not a solution.

It is time to
say no to more prisons.
Vote No on 61 and 57!

Workers go on strike at Nottingham Trent University

United Kingdom, 22.10.2008 20:39

Staff members belonging to the University and College Union (UCU) at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) were on strike yesterday, in protest against the university's derecognition of their union and plans to cut facility time for union representatives. Derecognition is an extreme move by the university authorities and is seen by the strikers as an attack on their right to organise independently.

Over three-quarters (77%) of members voted for the strike, which is supported by the UCU nationally. The action follows a rally on 6th Oct attended by UCU members from across the country which challenged the university's vice-chancellor's address to new students.

Global Day of Action Planned to Stop Execution of Troy Davis

United States, 22.10.2008 16:07

From Atlanta IMC:: "Remember I am in a place where execution can only destroy your physical form but because of my faith in God, my family and all of you I have been spiritually free for some time and no matter what happens in the days, weeks to come, this Movement to end the death penalty, to seek true justice, to expose a system that fails to protect the innocent must be accelerated..." Read full Letter from Troy Davis

On October 14, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Troy Anthony Davis' appeal. He is now scheduled to be executed on October 27 at 7pm for the murder of Police Officer Mark MacPhail in Georgia. Amnesty International believes Davis to have a credible claim of innocence. They write: "7 out of 9 witnesses have recanted, no murder weapon was found and no physical evidence linked Davis to the crime." They are organizing a global day of action on Thursday, October 23rd to urge the Georgia Board of Pardon and Paroles to grant clemency. The day will include a large rally at the state capitol in Atlanta, GA. Supporters are requested to organize solidarity rallies or other public events to demand justice, and express sympathy with the families of Davis and Officer MacPhail. A rally and picnic has been organised in opposition the National Front and assorted other far right and fascist groups who are coming to Wellington this weekend. "If you oppose racism and fascism come to the demonstration and let the fascists know they are not welcome!" says Anti-Fascist Action Wellington. Meet at the Cenotaph, 10am Saturday 25th October 2008.

"It is important that we show them they will not be allowed to organise without opposition. While they are tiny and insignificant compared to the organised racism of the Labour Party and the NZ Police, they are still worthy of our attention. Fascists cannot be allowed to organise and recruit openly in the streets without opposition."

Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America's "free market" policies have come to dominate the world -- through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.
