Film from Nahr al-Bared Camp in Lebanon: Transitions

Boston, 14.11.2008 15:08

Not able to return to their homes, stuck in pre-fabricated housing units and often unemployed, many of them feel frustrated and hopeless, only sometimes seeing a glimmer of hope.

Anti-Prop-8 Sentiment Fuels Anti-Dobson Chicago Protest

Chicago, 14.11.2008 07:08

From the newswire: "Despite the city's first brush with winter, [Saturday, November 8] some 500+ demonstrators greeted Focus on the Family's James Dobson outside a downtown hotel, protesting his pivotal role in engineering the defeat of equal marriage rights in California a few days ago.

"Dobson's group gave $800,000 for California's anti-equal marriage rights Proposition 8, and a Focus on the Family spin-off spearheaded that effort. Dobson was in town to receive an award from the Museum of Broadcast Communications (MBC), which has been roundly condemned for honoring a man who aims to take away rights from Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people."

Protests against California's Proposition 8 have swept the United States, with follow-up protests in Chicago and nationwide scheduled for November 15. Read more / see photos

'SPECIAL' NEW YORK TIMES BLANKETS CITIES WITH MESSAGE OF HOPE AND CHANGE

DC, 14.11.2008 05:22

Hundreds of independent writers, artists, and activists are claiming credit for an elaborate project, 6 months in the making, in which 1.2 million copies of a "special edition" of the New York Times were distributed in cities across the U.S. by thousands of volunteers. The papers, dated July 4th of next year, were headlined with long-awaited news: "IRAQ WAR ENDS". The edition, which bears the same look and feel as the real deal, includes stories describing what the future could hold: national health care, the abolition of corporate lobbying, a maximum wage for CEOs, etc. There was also a spoof site, at http://www.nytimes-se.com/. PCJ Lawsuit Frees Inauguration Route to the Public

DC, 13.11.2008 23:12

The landscape of the Inaugural Parade route this coming January 20 will be remarkably different as a result of a lawsuit filed by the Partnership for Civil Justice. The litigation has so far resulted in a resounding victory. The lawsuit was filed against the Bush/Cheney National Park Service on behalf of anti-war protestors who were barred from wide swaths of Pennsylvania Avenue on January 20, 2005. The Partnership for Civil Justice (PCJ) asserted that the National Park Service has tried to privatize Pennsylvania Avenue, "America's Main Street," to stage-manage democracy and reserve dozens of blocks to fat-cat donors and corporate sponsors.

The Omaha 2: COINTELPRO prisoners

DC, 13.11.2008 20:10

At the time of the murder trial in April 1971, COINTELPRO was still largely unknown to the American public. The jurors had no idea Hoover had ordered that no report be made of a critical voice analysis in the case. The break-in at a satellite FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania on March 8, 1971, three weeks before the Omaha trial, led to the first public revelations of the massive clandestine operation when secret COINTELPRO documents were discovered. Meanwhile in Nebraska, withheld from defense attorneys and kept from jurors, the recorded voice of Larry Minard's killer to the police emergency hotline was the subject of Hoover's direct command.

Below is the text of a poster created by the Garage Collective to mark the anniversary of 'Black Tuesday'. "AOTEAROA / NEW ZEALAND On Black Tuesday — November 12th, 1912 — the New Zealand Police and their ‘organised thugs’ stormed the Miners Workers Union Hall, stronghold of Waihi unionists on strike against the existence of a rival union, believed by many to have been assisted by the Waihi Gold Mining Company. Frederick George Evans was beaten to the ground by a policeman and left to die in the local police cell — resulting in New Zealand’s first official death during an industrial dispute and effectively ending the Waihi Strike. Loyal unionists, women and children were then rounded up and driven out of Waihi by ‘scabs’ while police looked on and did nothing." More

Racial Profiling Ruckus in Palo Alto

San Francisco Bay Area, 12.11.2008 15:09

On November 10 the Palo Alto City Council unanimously passed a resolution condemning racial profiling. In doing so they acknowledged the damage caused when Police Chief Lynne Johnson, commenting on a recent crime spike, said that she ordered her officers to question African Americans they see in Palo Alto to find out who they are. At a rally against racial profiling in front of Palo Alto's City Hall on November 9, several hundred people called for the police chief's resignation and a boycott of Palo Alto businesses.

Urban Tree Sit in Salem Against the WOPR

Portland, 12.11.2008 14:38

In the brisk hours of the morning a concerned citizen climbed into the branches of a tree opposite the capitol building unfurling a banner that read, "Don't Clear Cut Our Future." The sitter plans to sit in the tree to call attention to Governor Kulongoski's ability to stop the federal government from clear cutting Oregon's native forests." The event was organized by the group Cascadia Rising Tide to provide education about the WOPR leading up to a permitted rally on the Capitol Steps on Friday, Nov. 14.

Cascadia Rising Tide invites you to visit the capitol building lawn and show your support for our work against the Western Oregon Plan Revisions. These logging plan revisions would increase logging in Oregon by 436%. Pending the governor's blessing, 70% of the new logging would be clearcuts. Of the 2.6 million acres that the BLM manages (and does not pay Oregon land taxes for) timber harvesting would occur on 1 million acres. As for our last old growth, 100,000 acres would be cut.

With the recession weighing heavy on everyone's mind, proponents have touted the WOPR as a solution for Oregon communities. But others are concerned that this plan will actually lead to a loss of Oregon jobs. Recreation and tourism contribute more than twice as much money to Oregon's economy than the timber industry. Recreation, tourism, and fishing are projected to lose long-term jobs under the WOPR.

Green Reponse to Dershowitz Slanderous Oped on Israel-Palestine Conflict

Hudson Mohawk, 12.11.2008 05:38

Greens respond to a slanderous attack by lawyer Alan Dershowitz against the Green Party and its position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Dershowitz epitomizes those who believe that any criticism of the state of Israel or its actions constitutes anti-Semitism. What they call anti-Semitism in the Green Party's national platform is actually adherence to international law, observance of human rights for all Palestinians and Israelis, and support for a nonviolent negotiated resolution to the conflict

Steal this Election?

Hudson Mohawk, 12.11.2008 05:38

Following the theft of the Gore Presidency in Florida in 2000, the systemic suppression of votes from low-income and minority voters has actually increased by the Republicans. There is also considerable evidence that the Presidential election in 2004 was stolen in Ohio and New Mexico. While the potential for outright vote threat has increased with touch screen voting, many states have recognized this problem and haved moved to optical scan paper balloting (which also has problems). The Republicans have ramped up their voting fraud efforts in 2008 - but will it be enough to offset a growing Obama landslide? Greg Palast and Robert F. Kennedy write that the election has already been stolen.

In New York, for the first time in decades, the Senate went Democrat, with a number of surprising upsets in Buffalo along with a strong Democratic showing on Long Island and NYC. While at least one race remains too close to call, it is anticipated that two of the eldest Senate Republicans may resign, prompting special elections. The question now of course is will the Democrats deliver on the promises of change that their supporters embraced or will as normal the powers of special interest prevail even in defeat. The other big winner in NYS was the Working Families Party, who demonstrated that they have the most potent get out the vote operation, leading the Senate Democrats to victory.

He once told a group of activists who sought his support for legislation, "You've convinced me. Now go out and make me do it."
