City Councilor Chuck Turner's Public Statement on His Arrest

Boston, 24.11.2008 20:09

Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner was arrested last Friday, November 21st, by the FBI under corruptions charges that he denies, and was later released on a $50,000 bond. Since 2000, Turner has been one of the most progressive politicians in Boston, supporting minority groups, poor families, and other anti-war, economic and social justice issues. Below you will find the full statement he released upon his arrest: "While I intensely dislike and think that it is highly unfair to decide a person's guilt or innocence through the media, it is clear that once you become the target of a media witch hunt, you either fight back by presenting the essence of your legal defense or allow the media wolves to destroy your reputation so that the jury's decision becomes irrelevant to public perception... For her songs which attacked and criticized the racist apartheid regime in South Africa, her music was banned and she was denied the right to return to her homeland. She lived away from her birthplace for nearly 3 decades, and the regime wouldn't even allow her to return to the country to attend her mother's funeral. Portland Alliance Interview W/Weathermen Co-Founder Bill Ayers

Portland, 23.11.2008 17:38

In a stump speech delivered one month before election day, the intellectually challenged Sarah Palin said of President-elect Barack Obama; "Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country. Turns out one of Barack's earliest supporters is a man who, according to the New York Times, and they are hardly ever wrong, was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that quote, launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and US Capitol."

The so-called "terrorist" in question is Bill Ayers, co-founder of the sixties radical Weather Underground, an organization the FBI labeled as a domestic terrorist group.

The sixties became a time ripe for anti-government dissent and calls for revolution among young, radical activists in the U.S. Bill Ayers was one who answered this call. In time, he would rise to national prominence as a militant leader of the New Left.

Up to two dozen September 1 cases dismissed as St. Paul fails to provide evidence

United States, 23.11.2008 17:07

This Tuesday, several RNC-related misdemeanor cases were dismissed by the St. Paul City Attorney's office. The dismissed charges were pursuant to an earlier court order that gave the city a deadline of November 17 to share evidence, including video footage, with the defense for at least 22 cases, many stemming from the Shepherd Road and 7th/Jackson mass arrests on September 1. The city failed to meet the deadline. All the cases had trial dates of December 15.read more | related: Statement From the Subpoenaed Texans: RNC Grand Jury called off

Big Starbucks protest in Brighton this weekend

United Kingdom, 23.11.2008 08:08

PROTESTERS are to gather outside a highly controversial branch of the unpopular US coffee chain Starbucks in Brighton on Saturday November 29.

The 12 noon demo in St James St will mark the sixth month anniversary of the cafe opening without plannimg permission and against the wishes of lots of local residents and traders.

There a whole range of reasons for not liking Starbucks, ranging from their nasty habit of forcing out locally based competitiors to the ethical deficit that allows them to run a branch in Guantanamo Bay!

Said one of the campaigners, who have been holding regular Saturday protests in the run-up to this week's big event: "The arrogant twats even refitted as a café before permission was even determined assuming (or knowing more like) their money, clout, and fancy solicitors could sort any annoying little details like, you know, planning laws and community feeling.

Hamilton Bus Drivers Locked Out: Support Needed!

Aotearoa, 23.11.2008 06:10

The Hamilton bus company Go Bus has locked out 50 drivers after they took strike action for 24 hours, and were planning a fare strike on return to work. Fare strikes have seldom been used in New Zealand, but they are a creative form of industrial action that can build public support while putting direct economic pressure on the company. The company imposed a lockout once it heard a fare strike was likely and has kept the workers locked out despite the drivers withdrawing their notice of a fare strike. The drivers are paid $13.50 an hour and are seeking an increase to $16 an hour. The drivers’ pay is well below a living wage. The Council of Trade Unions is advocating a minimum wage of $16.30, as that is two-thirds of the average wage. Support the locked out bus drivers: gather at the Transport Centre in Hamilton at 9.30am Monday 24 November. City of Santa Cruz Helps Pave the Way to Paving UCSC's Upper Campus

Santa Cruz, CA, 22.11.2008 06:38

The City Council of Santa Cruz has applied to extend city services to the currently undeveloped UCSC Upper Campus. This is a key step in preparing this unique ecosystem for destruction under UCSC environmentally irresponsible Long Range Development Plan. The City Council's attempt to aid the University in this process is in direct contradiction to the expressed will of the people of Santa Cruz and it violates the city's existing municipal code.

"God hates Fags" coming

Portland, 21.11.2008 20:38

Silverton, OR elected the first ever openly transgender Mayor, Stu Rasmussen! Well, Westboro Baptist Church (started by Fred Phelps, extreme homophobic preacher, www. godhatesfags. com) is coming to Oregon to protest this.

Queers and allies of Oregon, let's rally together to support Stu, the city of Silverton and our queer community. For those of you who don't know, Portland is observing Transgender Remembrance Day this week. What better time to rally around support of our first openly elected transgendered official.

Westboro Baptist Church, is going to be protesting through Portland and then Silverton on Monday, Nov. 24th. We are calling a meeting to pull together to find a way to show our support of the queer community and raise funds for a queer organization (to be determined at the planning meeting, hopefully with input from Stu) in Oregon.

If you are interested in being involved in the planning, please attend our planning meeting on Friday, Nov. 21st at 7pm at Outside In (1132 SW 13th Ave. Portland, OR 97205 between Jefferson and Main on 13th.)

also...

The Rev. Fred Phelps' people from the Westboro Bapstist Church (the "God Hate's Fags" people) are planning a protest on Monday morning (7:30am), November 24, at the corner of 13th and SW Market. They will be protesting PSU's Queer Resource Center and, specifically, the concept of gender neutral bathrooms.

They refer to PSU on their web site: www.godhatesfags.com. If you scroll down to 11/24, you'll see it on there.

The Queer Resource Center is mobilizing folks to get together for a counter-protest. There will be an organizational/poster making meeting at the QRC at 1pm on Friday. We will meet at the QRC on Monday morning at 7 am to pickup the posters and walk down to the site together. If you need any further information please call the Queer Resource Center.

Josh Harper Update (11/20/08)

Portland, 21.11.2008 19:38

Dear friends,

As of today the state has stolen the last two years of my life. On November 16th of 2006, I walked into the nearby Federal Detention Center, was stripped naked, given a jumpsuit, and thrown in a cell for advocating controversial tactics to shut down an animal lab.

The first inmates I met gave me some advice— try to forget you are here. Don't think about the time. Do your best not to remember the outside world. What awful advice! Although it might make my life harder, I'm relieved that I still bristle at incarceration. I never want to be one of the fully domesticated folks who slowly stop seeing the bars and razor wire and start to consider this place home. I hate prison with a passion. That let's me know I'm still sane.
