39th National Day of Mourning

Boston, 30.11.2008 17:09

United American Indians of New England gathered at Cole's Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and marched with about 150 of their supporters through the streets of Plymouth on Thanksgiving afternoon. They were not there to celebrate the myth of what is taught about the Pilgrims arriving here almost 400 years ago, but rather they want the truth of that time to be told, Native American heritage recognized, and they called for political prisoner, Leonard Peltier to be released. The Wampanoag were the first natives to greet Pilgrims. LISTEN TO AUDIO REPORT: VIDEO (by Michael Borkson):

Interview With Matt Rossell on the Fur Industry

Portland, 30.11.2008 08:39

nterview with Matt Rossell of In Defense of Animals on the Public Access program, "A Growing Concern." The interview took place after the Fur Free Friday March, on the day after Thanksgiving. After a few minutes of footage from the days events, Matt talks about the world wide fur industry and played under cover footage taken in a fur farm in the United States. The video also depicts the dog and cat fur industry in China. Matt says that half of the fur used in garments in the world comes from China. Fur used for garments, but also for trim and accessories. This undercover footage is extremely graphic, portraying brutal and inhumane conditions as well as anal execution, the method used to kill the animals.

Black Friday Activities in Portland

Portland, 30.11.2008 07:38

On my way back from Fur Free Friday, I dodged throngs of Christmas shoppers weaving in and out of the shops downtown. It didn't seem as crowded as last year, but there were lots and lots of people putting material consumption up on a pedestal this afternoon. Bags in hands, they bobbed blissfully through the the city, making the obligatory stop at Pioneer Square to pick up promotional wares from the corporate sponsors of tonight's tree lighting event. But then....

Victory Declared for Iraq Vets and Supporters as Nassau County Drops Charges

NYC, 30.11.2008 00:39

In a stunning turn of fortune for the Hempstead 15, the Nassau County District Attorney’s office has agreed to drop the charges of “disorderly conduct” and “failure to obey a lawful order” against 10 Iraq War veterans and 5 of their supporters when what is known as a six-month “Adjournment to Contemplate Dismissal (ACD)” is finished.

IVAW - Operation First Casualty

San Francisco Bay Area, 29.11.2008 21:39

IVAW (Iraq Veterans Against the War) performed "Operation First Casualty" throughout downtown San Francisco on Black Friday, interrupting shoppers' routines with a graphic display of the action that they were missing by not being in Iraq. Volunteer "civilians" were detained, cuffed and hooded by the Iraq vets in a graphic reenactment of the US military's occupation of Iraq. Several volunteers were water-boarded. Volunteers pretended to be Iraq citizens suffering under the occupation of U.S. forces.

Fur Free Friday Report Back

Portland, 29.11.2008 04:39

There was a special, celebratory mood as the crowd paused at the corner where Schumacher Furs once stood. While Matt Roselle reflected on the history of the Schumacher campaign, including the attempt by the Schumacher family to sue activists for exercising their right of free speech... Shoe sellers came out of a shoe store while I stood on the sidewalk nearby. I heard one of the men saying to the other, "Uh oh, what do you think they think about all this leather leather?" (Since the shoe store was filled with leather.) The other man replied, "They probably don't like it, but this is really cool." Both stood outside and cheered the crowd.

For the most part, everyone I saw on the streets was in support of the demonstration. That was certainly good to see. The sad truth is, the fur trade is more entrenched than most of us realize, right here in Cascadia. Although fewer people are willing to risk their souls and social standing to wear fur these days, the number of trappers in Oregon has more than doubled in the past few years. Please keep educating people on all the reasons why fur is wrong, fur is unacceptable, and fur is dead.

Time for Building a Sweat-Free Ashland, Oregon

Rogue Valley, 29.11.2008 01:39

SweatFree Ashland Campaign

Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice is bringing forth a No Sweatshop Procurement resolution calling upon Ashland, Oregon to join a coalition of municipalities across the country that have pledged to become sweatshop free.

At the December 2, 2008, 7pm, Ashland City Council meeting it is expected the city will pass a resolution to move the city towards purchasing policies for employee-worn garments & apparel that are not made in sweatshops. This is to ensure that public tax dollars are not being spent to support factories that exploit and endanger workers.

Some of those practices include child labor, requiring 12-hour days, six to seven days a week with no overtime pay, and requiring female employees to submit to pregnancy tests and then firing them if they are found to be pregnant.

"The City of Ashland should ensure that its employees' uniforms aren't coming from sweatshops", states Wes Brain, Chair of Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice.

Keep reading to learn more about the Sweat-Free Movement and to view the resolution which has been submitted to the Ashland City Council.

BNP Threatens Free Media

United Kingdom, 29.11.2008 00:08

Indymedia is yet again facing legal threats to prevent the free flow of communication, this time from a political movement known for its hostility to free speech. On the 21st November 08 Indymedia received an email from someone claiming to be a legal representative for the British National Party, threatening to take legal action on a number of counts for publishing information on BNP members. After the hilarity of the “little Fuhrer”, Nick Griffin, running to the safety of the Human Rights Act to try to prevent the publication of members’ details, Britain’s fascist party has resorted to threats. The letter sent to Indymedia by Lee John Barnes LLB (hons), from the “BNP Legal Affairs Unit”, threatens to take legal action, on the basis of theft, data protection and contempt of court, unless the list of members is removed. The “lawyer” also attempts to shoehorn his charges into the form of anti-terrorism legislation, “The use of this information we feel is being hosted on your site for use only to incite acts of harassment, incite violence and direct targeted attacks against our members in the Leeds area”. He then goes on to explain the sections of the Terrorism Act under which Indymedia would be charged.

I nosaltres?

Community centres under fire

United Kingdom, 28.11.2008 16:09

The past few months have seen a number of bad news stories for Nottingham's community centres. The Chase Neighbourhood Centre in St Anns has made 30 staff redundant and is rumoured to be on the brink of closure, whilst there are reports that Neighbourhood Development Company (NDC) are looking to sell Radford's historic Tennyson Hall youth and community centre. The Chase Centre is in need of local support.

It has been suggested that with the credit crunch hitting Nottingham, local authorities may drastically cut funding for community centres and other community projects. This underlines the need for autonomous community centres, such as the Sumac Centre in Forest Fields, which continues to develop.

Annual Ft. Benning SOA Watch Protest Brings Out Scattered, Ineffective Pro-State Opposition

DC, 28.11.2008 05:24

Ft. Benning, Georgia - November 22nd and 23rd, an estimated 20,000 people took part in the annual School Of The Americas Watch vigil. This yearly protest against the School Of The Americas was filled with a multitude of events, teach-ins, rallies, prayers, concerts and parades all to help bring awareness to the atrocities committed by graduates from this government institution. It was a festive and spiritual event; all was peaceful and nonviolent. There was no scuffle with law enforcement except for early Sunday morning, when three women and three men crossed onto the base and were arrested by military police. The six are facing up to six months in federal prison and will appear in federal court in January 2009. View video by Wespennest streaming out of YouTube. Fotos by Isis.

Fuck Thanksgiving~ Stop Celebrating Genocide!!

Portland, 28.11.2008 03:38

Nobody but Americans celebrates Thanksgiving. It is reserved by history and the intent of "the founders" as the supremely white American holiday, the most ghoulish event on the national calendar. No Halloween of the imagination can rival the exterminationist reality that was the genesis, and remains the legacy, of the American Thanksgiving. It is the most loathsome, humanity-insulting day of the year - a pure glorification of racist barbarity.

Thanksgiving is much more than a lie - if it were that simple, an historical correction of the record of events in 1600s Massachusetts would suffice to purge the "flaw" in the national mythology. But Thanksgiving is not just a twisted fable, and the mythology it nurtures is itself inherently evil. The real-life events - subsequently revised - were perfectly understood at the time as the first, definitive triumphs of the genocidal European project in New England. The near-erasure of Native Americans in Massachusetts and, soon thereafter, from most of the remainder of the northern English colonial seaboard was the true mission of the Pilgrim enterprise - Act One of the American Dream. African Slavery commenced contemporaneously - an overlapping and ultimately inseparable Act Two.

Buy Nothing Day Organizers Confront the Economic Meltdown Dead On

Portland, 28.11.2008 03:38

The economy should be a part of life, not a steamroller crushing creativity and self-realization. Bailing out financial speculators while turning a blind eye to the imperatives of reducing working hours and building community centers is a bitter fruit of market fundamentalism

Hey jammers, creatives and meme warriors, Three more days to go! Check out our Buy Nothing Day action pyramid online for inspiration and ideas. Organize your own Buy Nothing Day jam (or join an existing one) by posting on our BND events wiki.

Every day feels like BND to most people right now. So this year in our press releases, interviews with reporters and communications with BND celebrants around the world, we are confronting the issue of the economic meltdown head-on. We're asking citizens, policy makers and pundits to examine the root causes of the crunch we're in and telling them that it was not caused by lack of regulation or toxic derivatives or the usual stuff that everybody is talking about. It is in fact our culture of excess and meaningless consumption - the glorified spending and borrowing of the past decade that's at the root of the economic crisis we in.

Here's the latest Adbusters BND Press Release. Circulate this widely--
