Finnish Neo-Nazi to Have Political Asylum Case Heard Next Summer

DC, 09.12.2008 22:11

The funniest thing during the court appearance of Finnish neo-Nazi Henrik Holappa (pictured here) was the makeup of all the court employees we encountered from the security guards to the clerk, to the government's attorney, right on up to the judge herself: Everyone of them, save for the security guards on the ground floor were black, and the ones on the ground floor, were Hispanic. Oh, wait, there was also a Spanish-speaking interpreter there, and she was Hispanic! In fact, with the exception of the few lawyers here and there, the only white people in the courtroom the entire time were Holappa, deNugent and the two others that came with them! Welcome to America, Henrik. You just saw a major reason why you had best start checking out Finnair for the best rates for a one way ticket back to Helsinki. The political asylum stunt he is pulling was continued until next summer, when hopefully he will be told to leave by a judge who we don't believe will buy the game he is playing that as a neo-Nazi, he is being persecuted. We suppose this will mean a few boneheads will be rallying around him in that regard the same way they did Hendrik Mobus and Ernst Zundel, which only means they are used to disappointment. They should expect tons more of it supporting this idiot. "What, Another One?" Finnish Neo-Nazi Seeking Political Asylum in USA, One Peoples' Project 07 Dec 2008

OHSU President Joe Robertson to OHSU Workers: Fuck You

Portland, 09.12.2008 20:09

Citing the downward-spiraling economy, OHSU president Joe Robertson informed employees last week that the annual employee appreciation Christmas party is canceled. He made this announcement less than a month after telling workers what a "priority" it was to him to acknowledge their hard work through this annual event. He now says that canceling this event is necessary because such an event would be "fiscally imprudent."

Victory for the United Electrical Workers Plant Takeover in Chicago!

Portland, 09.12.2008 20:09

On December 5, in Chicago, the owners of Republic Windows and Doors were set to close their doors after declaring financial ruin and abruptly laid off its 260 mostly Latino workers. Rather than passively accepting this kick in the teeth, the United Electrical Workers Union (UE) members decided to fight back, using a tactic not seen in this country since the 1930's. They occupied the factory and have continued to do so in shifts since Friday.

Yay for public bathrooms!

Portland, 09.12.2008 20:09

A solar potty has been installed downtown. Cool. In a city where the cops routinely cite people for "sex crimes" for having to piss in public, it's just sick that there are so few public restrooms. (James Chasse was actually beaten to death by police because they said that they suspected that he had urinated in public. Turns out he hadn't, but there's one more casualty of no bathrooms. Also, peoples' lives have been ruined by cops who tag them with a sex crime just for having to piss. Damn, what thoughtless, bullying demons those Portland cops are.)

Fouad Kaady Civil Suit Goes Forward; Trial Scheduled for April 2009

Portland, 09.12.2008 20:09

The federal civil rights case filed by the family of Fouad Kaady will proceed following a November 26 order by United States Magistrate Judge Paul Papak. Judge Papak's order settles summary judgment motions from the defendants in the case, a process in which the Judge determines which issues have been judicially proven by one side or the other and which facts remain to be determined by a jury.

On September 8, 2005, Fouad Kaady was shot seven times by a Clackamas County Sheriff's deputy and a Sandy, Oregon police officer after being badly burned and disoriented in a fiery car crash minutes earlier. The judge cited conflicting statements by several witnesses, including the two officers, as proof that material facts need to be decided by a jury at a trial.

Things a Clown House can and has done: Pirate radio, screen printing, Dawg Snax our wheat free, vegetarian dog treats, yoga classes, direct action training, black cross training, circus skill training, free bike shop, freak bike shop, brewing booze, housing tent people, meeting place, car free info, Much more indeed I promise.
In the 10 years of the former clown house we nailed down plenty of good ideas for the world. The last month before C.H. eviction we also had a bike/kite that generated electricity, a lawn mower that is bike powered and last I checked...a lot of happy denizens.
Since then the Clown House kids have been constantly evicted and classed out, we need a home. I (Dingo) have been living in a house bike since May and I love it...I still need a place for the lab and tools to live. My favoright thing that a Clown House does is BRING DOWN PROPERTY VALUES through obnoxious clownery and gladiator style single combat events such as mud wresling and tall bike jousting!!!! Anarchist centre opens in St Ann's

United Kingdom, 09.12.2008 18:09

Sunday saw the opening event of a new centre for anarchist education and culture in St Ann's. The Sparrows' Nest, named after local anarchist publication The Nottingham Sparrow, hosts a large collection of material on anarchist theory, local struggles and workers' struggles. The Sparrows' Nest is largely the work of local Anarchist Federation members and was inspired by a squatted infoshop in Ljubliana and similar projects in Carrara, Italy.

At the opening a selection of pamphlets and books were on display in four sections: The Classics (of anarchism), Neither Left or Right (referring to anarchism's opposition to fascism and the authoritarian left), Work (workers' struggles and the struggle against work) and Anarchy and Action in Nottingham. People were also able to watch films and browse the extensive library.

Plane Stupid stuh down Stansted

United Kingdom, 09.12.2008 11:39

Plane Stupid shut down all flights from Stansted airport for four hours on Monday morning in response to the government approving the expansion of capacity at the airport by ten million passengers a year. Over 50 protesters were arrested and dozens of flights cancelled.

"We all grew up listening to Blair and Brown talking about the urgent need to slash emissions, but nothing ever happened. Even now politicians from our parents' generation are in Poland holding talks about talks, but still nobody's actually doing anything. The scientists tell us we've got about seven years to make emissions peak then drop, and if we fail it will be the people on this runway, and our children, who'll live with the consequences. That's why I'm doing this."

Plane Stupid claim that aviation is Britain's fastest growing source of emissions, already amounting to at least 13% of the UK's climate impact. With plans for new runways across the UK, including at Heathrow and Stansted, experts from the Tyndall Centre for climate research say Labour's aviation policy alone will scupper any chance the UK has of hitting its climate targets.

The peaceful protest began at 3.15am this morning (Monday) whilst the runway was temporarily closed for maintenance work. Plane Stupid aims to prevent the scheduled reopening of the runway at 5am. The group intends to maintain its blockade for as long as possible, preventing the release of thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gases.

Declare your job a 90-day free zone!

Aotearoa, 09.12.2008 06:10

National’s sacking bill is going to meet resistance. The 90 day bill is an overt attack on workers' rights, targeting the most vulnerable in small worksites. Workers in these job sites currently enjoy few rights as they are mostly not unionised and the employers consequently have a great deal of power. The CTU is responding with a petition and looking at putting adverts in the major newspapers. This falls well short of what is needed. Direct action by workers is the way to respond to this attack. Unite union is taking the lead by saying that any worker can join Unite for $2 a week and get phone advice and back up where needed. If workers are wrongly sacked in the 90 day period Unite will organise pickets in defence of these people. Any employer who sacks under this legislation could find themselves confronted by a rowdy picket line and Unite's 20 foot rat. Employers plainly want to put the pressure on workers; it's time to push back. Contact: Daphna Whitmore 0294949865 Links: Unite Union | Workers Party

Brian MacKenzie Infoshop to Close at End of 2008

DC, 09.12.2008 02:10

Dear Infoshop Friends and Supporters, For many reasons, it's been some time since we have put out an update on the status of the Infoshop. We are writing now to try to catch everyone up to speed on what's going on with us. There is a lot to say. As many have noticed, the Infoshop has been closed considerably more than it has been open over the last few months. For some time, those of us doing the core work involved in maintaining this project have felt overwhelmed and stretched very thin. Although there has always been a steady stream of interest from willing volunteers to support the project, finding people who are committed to doing the more intensive work entailed in sustaining the project over the long term, has always been a challenge…

Griechenland: Polizist erschießt Jugendlichen

Germany, 08.12.2008 23:39

7pm Thursday December 11. Auckland Trades Hall, 147 Great North Road, Grey Lynn. New Zealand is heading for recession. Our jobs, wages, homes, pensions, benefits and public services are all under threat. We did not cause this. It was the financial elite of wealthy bankers, investors and speculators who have put us in this situation, yet they expect us to pay for their crisis. Already we have seen job losses, cuts in services and price rises. Socialist Aotearoa has invited a broad range of speakers; trade unionists, socialists, environmentalists, community groups, and interested individuals, to begin the debate on how to unite the left against the effects of the global financial crisis. Speakers include: John Minto from Unite Union, Green MP Sue Bradford, Frank Doleman from Socialist Aotearoa and other concerned socialists, environmentalists, community activists and individuals. Anger All Over Europe As Police Shot Dead Young Activist In Athens

United Kingdom, 08.12.2008 21:40

On Saturday 6th of December at around 10pm, two Greek policemen were in patrol in a central street by Exarchia square, in the center of Athens. They had a verbal argument with some young people who were there. During the argument, one of the cops pulled his gun and shot a 16-year-old guy twice. The victim was moved to Evangelismos Hospital to be pronounced dead. According to eye-witnesses, the cop had been swearing against the young man, showing his genitals, before shooting him.

This immeditaly sparkled some of the heaviest protests Greece has seen for over 20 years. Many Greek cities have seen clashes with police since Saturday night, and are continuing on Monday evening with University occupations, closed schools and further demomstrations. Some argue that Greece is at the "verge of a serious crisis".

Protesters all over Europe have also taken to the streets. In London the entrance of the Greek Embassy was blocked for several hours by around 70 activists. The embassy was effectively closed down form around 10am till 3pm. The blockade ended with at least two arrests. See full report and photos in IMC-London [Report and Pics | Pics]

In Germany there have been protests in several cities, including a solidarity demo in Berlin where the Greek embassy was also occupied (ger) for the whole day. Demonstrations also took place in Hamburg (ger), Dresden (ger), Bremen (ger) and Cologne (ger), whilst the consulate in Cologne (ger) was attacked with red paint. Further calls for solidarity demos have been made in Edinburgh, Dublin and Barcelona.

Appeal from the streets of Prince William County

DC, 08.12.2008 17:11

Today on the streets of Woodbridge and Manassas, the temperature was in the 20s, with the wind gusting to more than 40 mph. Despite this extreme weather, nearly 200 men were huddled outside the 7-11s desperately seeking work. Many told us that they hadn't worked in weeks, and that when they finally found some, they were ripped off by their employers. About a dozen volunteers for Woodbridge Workers Committee and Mexicanos Sin Fronteras put in many dozens of hours purchasing, packing and distributing bundles of food, enough to last an individual 4 or 5 days. It still costs about $800 each time we provide a food bundle for 200 workers. (Our goal is bi-weekly distributions through the winter). To provide a warm cap, gloves and socks, in addition to any winter coats we collect costs over $10 for each worker.

December 7, 2008 Friendship Heights MD- Between 2:45 and 3pm today an animal rights organization was exercising their rights to free speech on a public side walk as a protest against Max Mara 5471-F Wisconsin Avenue, when police officers asked for the use of a bullhorn to be stopped, saying "You're outta here." The activist then complied with the police officer's request, and continued the chanting without the bullhorn. Without any warning the activist was then grabbed by 2 police officers and put under arrest. The arrest was witnessed by this reporter as overtly aggressive with brutal force used completely unnecessarily. During the situation, once again, MD police tried to threaten persons who were trying to record the situation, telling them that video "with voice recording" or just voice recording was illegal without their permission under MD law. The activist was then taken away and is still in custody as far as we know.

Rembrandt Suits picket in Wellington

Aotearoa, 08.12.2008 00:10

Workers from Rembrandt Suits held a picket on Saturday 6th December outside the Kirkaldie & Stains department store in central Wellington after receiving a pitiful offer from Rembrandt bosses. The workers, skilled and experienced machinists (one of whom has worked for the company for 20 years) are currently on the minimum wage and are asking for $13.50 / hour. They have been offered only a 24 cent increase, which would take them to $12.24. Most of the workers require Government subsidies just to survive.

Has NDC lost the plot?

United Kingdom, 07.12.2008 22:09

The Neighbourhood Development Company (NDC) is part of the government's New Deal for Communities project to regenerate some of Britain's poorest inner city neighbourhoods. NDC in Nottingham has received millions of pounds of funding to bring positive change to the Radford area over the past 8 years.

The partnership has had a controversial history, culminating in the sacking of its entire Board of Directors earlier this year. In spite of, or perhaps because it is paying its Chief Executive £47k for a 3-day a week job, the organisation has come under criticism for being out of touch with the community and its lack of financial transparency. In spite of the fact that it is set to receive £12m from the government over the next 2 years, NDC is rumoured to be selling the Tennyson Hall community centre, which contradicts its mission to "improve and bring back into use" the assets under its control.

Iraq-US Status Of Forces Agreement

San Francisco Bay Area, 07.12.2008 21:41

The U.S.-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) is a pact that provides a legal basis for U.S. troops in Iraq and establishes their departure from Iraq by December 31st, 2011 pending any negotiations. On November 16th, 2008, Iraq's Cabinet approved the agreement. On November 27th, the Iraqi Parliament ratified the agreement. Followers of Moqtada al-Sadr and many others protested the passing of the accord as prolonging and legitimizing the occupation, and Grand Ayatollah Sistani expressed concerns with the ratified version. On December 4th, Iraq's presidential council approved the security pact. A referendum must be held by mid-2009 which may terminate the agreement and require Coalition forces to completely leave by the middle of 2010.

Police Athens (Greece) shoot dead 16 yr. old anarchist

Portland, 07.12.2008 21:40

A police car patroling in Exarchia, central Athens, passing through Mesologgiou cobbled street (considered an alternative place with music, bars etc and lots of youth in the streets, so we can easily assume the police car was sent there to provoke and harass the youth), was confronted by a few young people, shouting to the policemen to get lost. There are a few reports that an empty bottle or a brick was thrown to the police car. The cops went out of the car provoking the youth and one of the pigs shot against one 15-16 year old boy, right on the heart, murdering him in cold blood. The name of the boy that stood up to the cops is Alexandros Grigoropoulos. Anarchists and residents gathered, but riot police forces circled the area. There are hundreds of policemen in the streets around central Athens.

Support Swells for Chicago Union Workers Factory Occupation

Chicago, 07.12.2008 20:08

The worker occupation of the Republic Windows and Doors factory on Chicago's Goose Island by members of UE (United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America) Local 1110 went into its third day on Sunday, and workers have vowed to continue the occupation until they are paid back pay and benefits, or until the plant is re-opened.

The occupation was declared on Friday, the day the company moved to shutter the plant with only three days notice — in violation of federal and state labor laws. Company management blames the shut-down on Bank of America, which cut their credit line — after BoA received $25 billion in federal bailout money that the bank said they did not need. Since the bailout began, BoA — like big banks across the globe — has slashed credit lines to businesses, forcing a growing number of small and medium-sized companies to shut down. Workers plan to meet with company and bank representatives on Monday — and to picket BoA's LaSalle St. offices on Tuesday if Republic's line of credit is not restored.

The action at Republic Windows comes on the heels of a drive to kick out the company union, which had colluded with company owners and management for years. That effort succeeded after three years of struggle. Republic Windows' worker occupation is one of the first actions of its kind in the United States since the Great Depression, when a wave of sit-in strikes and occupations of factories and manufacturing operations marked one of the most militant phases in U.S. labor history.
